Nika is a legend that became a reality in a devil fruit. Joy Boy is likely a title, not the actual name of the person. It's like saying the Jedi are back when Luke appears in Return of the Jedi. Luke is called a Jedi by his friends and enemies but that is not his real name.
I would say you are partially correct especially after the knowledge bestowed upon us by latest chapter . Nika - the legend of elbaf (powers in devil fruit) , chooses its host where there is a need for liberation . We cannot really say whether joyboy was a title or a name, but as per vegapunk joyboy was the person born in void century and had powers like nika

They both also appear to be lonely at the top or unchallenged. I think there is a connection as well in some shape or form atleast. Mihawk was also the first character the strawhats met who obliterated them, showing the scale of power in the one piece world and Zoro still has to overcome him.

I dont think the IM U( i am u) forshadow works based on imu's name as its written as Im but is enunciated as imu and Imu refers to themselves as mu when he/they spoke to cobra so if anything it would be I mu, so imu got a double pronoun thing going on as a quirk it seems(imu might be a child or teen). Im could be a reference to Imhotep as theres a manga called Im:Great Priest Imhotep, Imu could be a former follwer of the Sun God Nika or Joyboy and something went wrong/ he betrayed him and could explain why saturn has regen since Imhotep was known to be a god of medicine supposedly

My Personal Theory of Joy Boy Becoming Imu:
After reading Chapter 1113, I think this theory makes a lot of sense. It has been shown that the Fishmen, the Samurai of Wano, the Skypeians, the Shandians, and the Minks live in locations that can survive a worldwide Great Flood. Joy Boy lost faith in his dream to unite the world in equality and only believed the races and people who once worked with him in the past were the only ones worth saving. Thus, he became Imu, established the World Government, and planned to use his resources to eradicate "evil" (Violent Justice).

Imu is not Joy Boy or vice versa. Its confirmed by Vegapunk in chapter 1115 that Joy Boy is deceased, as it was his death that officially ended the Void Century. Also Joy Boy was confirmed to be the first person to have eaten the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika devil fruit. And only one devil fruit user can be existence at any time, and we have seen that Imu has an entirely different set of powers altogether when he tried to kill Sabo at Mariejois.
Also Joy Boy is literally confirmed to be the worlds first pirate, which means that any chance of Imu being him are gone like the wind. As Joy Boy fought AGAINST the Twenty Kingdoms, he did not ally with them. And the Twenty Kingdoms are the ones who killed him, so there is no way in hell that they would willingly serve the person who tried to prevent the emergence of the World Government.
Since in the onepiece universe there are alien races as they confirmed,i believe IMU & the elders which also have their names with planets etc must be from another world! Also the devil fruits might also belong to another place to the universe as well!

I know you didn't ask me but I personally don't believe that. I don't even believe the strawhat at Marygeois is even big, but rather, I'm in the camp that believes Imu is just very, very small and the strawhat just looks huge next to him. We don't get any other frame of reference to compare its size to, and in the chapter where we see Imu sitting in the empty throne, unless the throne is huge, Imu looks like a little toddler in that chair. Not to mention, the swords in the ground in front of him seem to be as big, if not bigger, than Imu himself. Now, it could just be a weird quirk of Oda's art style, but personally I believe it's a red herring and the strawhat isn't actually large, Imu is just very small...
Going off what you said, instead of comparing inu to that hat itself, compare imu to the wanted poster that she has in her hands then compare the posters to the straw hat, to me it seems the straw hat is too small to be a giants hat but too big to be a normal human but it might fit someone like Kuma's dad since he was a buccaneer with a big head (kuma head is a normal human head in buccaneer body)@@kamikaze.33

Imo i think imu for one is a nure onna yokai (nerona imu) as we now know that the elders are based on yokais. And i believe imu was someone who was supposedly involved with noah and because joy boy failed to raise noah this could have perhaps led to people dying including the nerona family and this led to imu falling into darkness and having to eat the nure onna yokai fruit giving him serpent abilities and the ability to control water in which he used to raise the water levels to hide everything and drown old islands that were once above sea level. Maybe one piece is a plan to undo what imu did and lower the water levels back to normal or maybe it is something that should change imu’s mind about what happened as it states the whole truth

what if the gorosei are descendents of celestial dragons,who corrupted imu's mind, turned that entity against joyboy, if the gorosei have mental manipulation powers and are secretly controlling imu, mentally manipulating it to do their work, so that when their deeds become known, they can shift the blame to imu.Also, imu appears only on rare occasions and does not have direct communication with the navy or vegapunk or anyone, but the gorosei have distributed all the powers among themselves and they make imu believe that imu has taken decision independently.We can only see the destruction of lulusia throgh imu's eyes, but we havent yet properly seen the exact use of mechanism of the mother flame or how it is done and we assume that imu destroyed lulusia island. IMU and Luffy could have the same face. This might be the reason IMU's face has been hiden all this time. One piece could literally mean that IMU and Luffy is destined to become one and is destined to sit in the empty throne to rule over the world.
I really like this theory, but I have one big problem with it: Luffy doesn’t embody ultimate and pure good - Kuma does. Luffy can be incredibly selfish and insensitive at times.
