You know what reminds me of this? Its nice to have a friend. Progression of a love story masked as a friendship story. The running away to india just like setting off to the Lakes, sweater like Cardigan. There's a progression in invisible string too. In fact the entire folklore album is a progression of a couple's relationship.
yes, i agree with you! 'it''s nice to have friend' has a similar vibe and storyline. i love your viewpoint about how folklore is like a progression. i think a lot of the songs on folklore are related, if you look at it lyrically there are key words that taylor repeats in a few songs that make them connect. it's so interesting! :)
@@summersentiment the callback to her old songs as far back as Red is interesting.
I noticed all these connections alsoâŚglad to see others see it too!đ˘
My heart breaks at âi think your house is haunted your dad is always mad... you should come live with meâ
same, it's the most heartbreaking line in this song
I love how the first 6 lines are a memory. I see a seven year old taylor swinging really high in a swing (7 feet high lol) and when reaching the peak, she's supposed to jump into the creek but is too scared to.. (beautiful imagery)
Then in the SEVENTH line, she breaks from the memory and asks us, Are there still beautiful things? Like this memory.
Loving your analysis. Will be watching/listening to them all!
i love that! thanks for pointing that out đ i love how there's always SO MUCH detail in taylor's work!
and thank you for your comment! i rly appreciate it and am glad you're enjoying the videos â¨
Such a heartbreaking song. It knocked me when I took in the lyrics for the first time and it still hurts me each listen.
Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. â¤ď¸
it definitely doesn't get easier listening to the lyrics even though you know what's coming, i agree. i'm glad you enjoyed. thank you for your comment â¨
Before i learned civility reminds me of my daughter. She is like a very feral baby monkey right now and one day she wont need to be asked to be polite and quiet. Just makes me cry
đđđ
I think Taylor asking their friend to picture her in the trees and the weeds could also be because those places are outside.. you know? They're not in the house, they're out in the open and maybe if she remembers them playing there, maybe things will be easier to bare. Maybe she'll be able to pretend she isn't in the house, hidden, and crying in the closet.
that's such a great point!! it's like she is trying to redirect her friend's attention to a place outside, where it's safer
@@summersentiment exactly!!! When listening to it I felt that was so so sweet, and innocent in a way. Kinda like just diverting the friend's attention would make it all better.
@11:30
I was just reminded of Jo and Laurie from Little Women they talk about running away to pirate ships escape from the society and it's expectations.
đ
Seven, seventh song on the album, just before August (8th month of the year)
Another great interpretation, Love the detail you bring out in these songs. Look forward to your next!
My all time favorite song from Taylor because the emotion it emits from deep within me...
I hope she's ok wherever she is â¤
Love love love your explanation!!! Your voice is so smoothing
Love this video and your analysis. This song is so beautiful, very well written and I love the instrumental as well.
thank you so much!! đ and yes i agree, it 's so eloquent and beautiful, both lyrically and melodicallyâ¨
This is really beautifully analysedđĽşâ¤ď¸
thank you so much! đđ
Love this!
thank you!! :)
True, is a childhood fantasy đ
Thank uuuu sm
I more thought of it as her on a swing. Swinging high into the trees âI hit my peak at 7 feetâ 7 feet into the sky!
Wow thank you for this amazing analysis!!đđ
thanks for watching! đđ
She is lyrical genius
This is a beautiful video and exactly the kind of literary analysis of Taylor's lyrics I was looking for! seven is incidentally my favorite song on the album, but I'm definitely going to watch all your other analyses now + I've subscribed:)
I wanted to add something about the "picture me in the weeds" verse which is a really poignant part of the song for me. It's a striking image of the wildness of childhood, reflected by nature with weeds being a wild/untamed growth. There was freedom then that is now repressed by the "civility" of being a grown up and of being far/separate from nature. and in this way (as mentioned in another comment) "seven" very strongly connects to "the lakes" with its imagery of being one with nature.
aw thank you for your comment and for subscribing! ⨠really glad you enjoyed the analysis!
mmm yes, i love what you're saying about the wild nature of weeds. you bring up a great point that it's 'untamed' nature can be a parallel to the 'untamed-ness' of childhood. that adds even more depth...and more EMOTION!!
i really do enjoy the references to nature in this album and "'the lakes" has A LOT. i do agree with you, the way the characters align themselves with nature in "seven" and "the lakes" is significant and it does link those two songs together. in "the lakes" there is such strong nature imagery and even metaphorically...nature is very much its own character in that song (i'd argue in this song too). â¨
So interesting, I loved it. At first i only heard "i hit my peak at 7" which meant to me seven years old, but then i thought, that can't be right, but then realizing the next word was "feet" then i thought ok she's also saying she was able to reach 7 feet high while in the swing. So is that an instance of a word being used as a double meaning?
Yup I thought the same thing
I love this video and everything you said the meaning, it makes sense but I don't understand of she says "I can't recall your face" but she still sings "our love lasts so long"
thank you!! đ
when the protagonist says "i can't recall your face" i think of that as being due to the fact that she was a child in this scenario. so while she may remember the person she played with & where they played & how she felt she can't remember what the other kid looked like...it all happened too long ago and as a kid sometimes you forget things like that
when she sings "our love lasts so long" i interpret that as saying: even though the protagonist can't remember the other other child's face she does remember the love she had for them
it's like the protagonist doesn't even NEED to remember the other child's face...she remembers the love & bits of their childhood they spent together and that's meaningful to herâ¨
hope that helps! đ
greatâ¤ď¸đ
thank you â¨
Hey I liked ur analysis and it kind of made me aware of certain things in the song that I didnât notice before like, I write poetry so I like to analyze song lyrics as well ( sorry this is too long) I noticed that:
1) Feet in the swing above the creek
Is itâs one phrase, she pauses when she sings it too like really distinguishing seven from feet. So she hit her peak at seven / her feet were in the swing
I no longer get a sense of her simply sitting and swinging but of her standing in the swing
Which seems significant bc it would make it seem like her intentions were to jump into the creek not to merely swing
âbut she was too scared to jump inâ so sheâs standing swinging on the swing ready to jump in put at her peak in sky she looks down and doesnât jump
2) then when u described âto the Moon and to Saturnâ it makes me wonder what is the significance of Saturn - the well known phrase is âto the moon and backâ so why such a deliberate deviation why Saturn, why not Pluto or Venus ya know
3) The narrator says she canât remember the girlâs face which seems interesting like to have such vivid experiences with someone to the point where u know their home life and u develop plans to run away with them but u cannot remember their face?
4) the lines about childhood freedom vs. adult civility and the emphasis on it. It almost seems kind of out of place like u wonder what is the connection to the main storyline ( ofc there is one itâs just interesting) sort of like why is there such an emphasis on the desire that she be specifically pictured in that state
5) Also I noticed when u weâre explaining the haunted house...
Tay states that the girlâs house is haunted first... and then gives the reason that itâs because the father is always mad
Like the house is haunted... because the fatherâs mad
like sheâs trying to find a reason for why the house is haunted and not why the fatherâs mad??
6) and the line â and then we can be piratesâ
Taylor couldâve easily gone from you could come live with me and then u wouldnât have to cry etc... but she put in the line abt then we can be pirates
Which to me is specific like why pirates why not the generic princess. Itâs like pirates are free & uncivil which seems to be significant
This song can be seen as about childhood trauma and witnessing it but I also think itâs interesting that the part that alludes to that is such a short part of the song
Like thatâs not the focus of the song put rather the freedom that childhood allowed and the immortalization of their love through song.
1. omg!! i totally get what you're saying. after "seven", "feet" is perhaps the start of a new sentence, that's a really great point :) that definitely makes it significant in a different way...like she really had the intention of jumping but couldn't bring herself to do it in the end
2. i just looked this up, in astrology saturn can represent 'restriction and limitation'...i think taylor is familiar with astrology bc in 'state of grace' she mentions fire signs and she literally accepted an award recently and the tapestry behind her were the zodiac signs (i get it was a studio but still!! LOL)...so perhaps saturn here adds to the limited options taylor had as a kid to help her friend...she only noticed these things but since she was a kid there wasn't much she could do?...what are your thoughts on this?
3. i agree, this adds an interesting layer its mysterious and a bit ironic bc v specific details are explained. i think this is reflective of the way memories of childhood are so selective but its def interesting to think about...
4. i agree w/ this point as well...perhaps she's reminiscing and when recalling her friend she is taking a moment to reflect on who she was (as an individual) during that time period too? also her lack of civility is opposing to the potential meaning of 'saturn' which is another layer to consider...all v interesting. also ironic a bit bc she lacked civility...she was more free but still limited in regards to helping her friend...
5. my interpretation is that taylor has noticed that her friend's dad is always mad and since she is a child she is naive and pure so she's using the contexts she's been exposed too...she's probably heard stories of a haunted house so that's her explanation, that's how she, as a child, is making sense of the dad's behavior. that's the conclusion she's made based on her view of the world as a young naive child so i view it as her stating her conclusion first (the house is haunted) but its a conclusion she's come to after a lot of thinking on her part
6. that's a really great point! you're totally right, pirates are not as civil! that ties into her theme about being more free and not civil as a child...again i view this as ironic and a bit sad b/c she couldn't do anything as a child to help her friend....it's like escapism...they lack power in their real life but if they pretend to be pirates...they have power/don't play by the rules/etc
yes, the childhood trauma isn't the main point but rather a supplementary element. i think that makes it more heartbreaking...b/c as a child she wouldn't be understanding the true depth of what she was witnessing its the type of thing one would understand the depths of as an adult looking back...the fact that it's not the main point like you mentioned i think reflects how it was experienced for the protagonist as a child. i like that their love for one another stands out more, it's a bit of sweetness in this somber song :) i also think the juxtaposition of the trauma with the innocence lessens the impact of the reality of the home life of the friend for the listener, i've noticed taylor does this often...portrays things in a way that dampens it a bit b/c stating it point blank is too intense and emotional
thank you for your well thought out points!!! they were all great, i was genuinely shook at your first point, i love considering that bc it changes the song a bit :)
@@summersentiment âSaturn is about maturity, responsibility, discipline, and stewardship,â says Jennifer Freed, PhD, psychological astrologer - when I looked this up all I could think about was the juxtaposition created by the moon, representing whimsy, fairytale, femininity, and saturn- the new maturity and as you said limitations as an adult. effectively taylor draws back to the theme of a long lasting love by saying I loved you as a child who looked up at the moon for hope and i love you now even though i now look to saturn's ethic of work an restriction. furthermore- back to the moon, there's this theme of cycles, cycles of life, birth, death- taylor observes al of the demise and reincarnations of thing that she has felt in life. whether it be the unruliness and wildness of weeds, or the protectiveness over friends or the now industrial burn of adult life.
@@aishwaryakhadka2103 thank you for this comment, i love how eloquently you tied everything together! i really enjoy your perspective on the juxtaposition of moon & saturn and how it relates to who taylor was as a child vs now. that progression, represented through a form of "nature" (planets) makes it seem more intense/unavoidable/necessary in my opinion & it adds more depth.
i also love what you said about the cycles of the moon! it can be reflective of the cycles of her life, you're right!
thanks for sharing!! đâ¨
