      I've heard more people say that it's taboo in disagreement to it being taboo, than people actually arguing that it is taboo. The most controversal actual statement I've heard is that it's for pussies because you're excluding interraction (paraphrasing here, but you get the point).

    • @ericmeekey7886
      @ericmeekey7886 Před rokem +3

      Voyeurism is probably the taboo that photographers want to avoid with telephoto lenses. Getting closer and interacting with a scene and its subject may be a noble attempt at fighting the taboo, but photography and videography will always be voyeristic considering the viewer of the image has zero commitment or obligation with engaging in what they see.

    This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and I really enjoyed watching it. After 40 years of taking photographs, my photography has changed.
    I'm carry smaller and lighter gear AND I'm using a telephoto lens for far away shots. The biggest reason is to avoid confrontations with people on the reason(s) I'm taking photos. It seems in the current world atmosphere more people are suspicious and concerned if their photo is being taken. The telephoto lens helps to eliminate that. Best of luck in your photography journey!!

    - what you want to do
    - how you will do including composition
    - explanation, tips and tricks etc..
    AND THAN SHOOTING... More of the videos that I am hitting are mainly shooting and showing the final results without many explanation and preparation
    I am also trying to use my Nikon 70-300 4.5-6.3 on the streets but only at daytime because its lowest f/stop 4.5...

      Thank you so much!! My goal is to give you an insight into my creative process from gear, the framing, to final shot (except editing, though we do have a few videos on that subject too).

    Thank you for this video. I do street photography and am relatively new and am always told 35mm is a must. Even 20mm was recommended as ideal but no higher than 50mm should be considered for street. This would require me getting very close to the subjects and disrupting the candidness of the shots. Some of the best street photography shots I have taken have been with my 85mm and I would imagine I'd be able to get great results going longer.
    Also, I'm glad you've dispelled the notion that you must have a small camera as a larger one is somehow evil and will ruin everything. I like my full frame and don't want to be tied down to my crop sensor because somehow bigger cameras are bad. This makes me feel much better about doing street photography the way I prefer so thanks again.

    Around 8:22, "ishi yaki imo" 🙂! Anyway, nice video and point taken about using longer focal lengths for street photography. Maybe, the f/2.8 is rather useful to keep the ISO low? I wonder how things would turn out with a telephoto lens that is at f/5.6 at the far end of the zoom range but also has an image stabiliser. Got to try one of these days in Ginza!

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před rokem

      Definitely with a very long lens having f/2.8 at night is useful because it's much more difficult to rely on slow shutter speeds. But, of course, one can make it work with smaller apertures if needed, it's just not ideal. I think f/5.6 is pushing it but f/4 is still quite viable in a bright city like Tokyo.

    “If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough” - Robert Capa
    People have mistaken this line by taking it in literal terms. I guess most of the taboo of shooting streets with telephoto lens originates from the misinterpretation of this quote. In my understanding the closeness is more about involvement with the art and empathetic engagement with the subject than physical closeness.

At least with a wider lens you can crop the image. I don't have this lens (it's pretty pricey, even the Sigma and Tamron variants) but would nevertheless be interested to see how you could use it for light trails or during the day. I've used it briefly in some other videos, but not for street photography. I also love using the 70-200 for architecture, especially in the day time. I have used it for light trails but found it very difficult to create good compositions with strong leading lines due to the narrow FOV. It could be a fund challenge though. I will certainly use it again in upcoming videos! And the next video I'm working on will feature the 14-28 f/2.8 prominently. :)

    Honestly.. i have the strong impression that the mirrorless doesn't quite have "the feel" your D4 has. I know, you explained all the benefits that come along modern technology, but somehow I think your latest images suffer in terms of "style" or don't really translate into what I am used to see from you. Your composition and everything around it is great as always, but it is something to the medium that doesn't really benefit the result in my opinion. I had seen this already when you transitioned from the D3 to the D4 way back in the day, but the difference wasn't that dramatic - but I did indeed notice a bit of change especially in the color scheme and depth of the images. But now from the D4 to the Z6II there is HUGE difference in both regards. The images some how appear more "flat" to me than usual. It's what you talked about in the "iconic" video of you, which we all know and love (which also inspired me to pick up a camera - but enough of the fanboying) anyway, you said that you love your subjects to pop out of the frame and your images really used to have that quality (which I had seen from no other photographer really) and it was amazing. The mirrorless images however just don't deliver that quality. I don't know what causes this and it also seems a bit illogical in regards to optics (there shouldn't be too much of a difference), but yeah.. the difference is there. Maybe it's time for change but... it's not Lukasz Palka anymore..

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 3 lety +1

      I think you are seeing a difference in my work, but I don't think the camera has much to do with it. I'm simply evolving in how I shoot. I'm not trying to do the same thing over and over. I'm always looking for new ground. The reason my images used to have that quality of 'pop' is because I ran around shooting everything on that Voigtlander 40mm set to f/2. It made for a shallow DOF, but being a 40mm and shooting it in a zone of about 4-5 meters, the background was only a little bit blurred, giving that amazing 'pop' effect. I still shoot with the 40mm sometimes, but I gravitated away from this technique because I started focusing more on composition, and wanted the background more in focus. Also, I generally photography subjects less directly these days. I'm much more into silhouettes and hints of subjects. Perhaps I'm taking too much influence from Saul Leiter, who's work I've seen a few times at exhibitions in Tokyo and was blown away. I also spent quite some time shooting on 28mm which does not really work well for getting that interesting pop effect. Sometimes, the magic just wears off.
      Anyway, I really appreciate that you have been a fan of my work for so long that you can even notice these difference over time! Thank you so much!! :)
