A Dream Relationship with the Land in Micronesia

  • The Federated States of Micronesia and specifically Pohnpei was one of my favourite places so far for so many reasons! It also introduced me to a whole new world in terms of understanding what conservation can look like and here it's what can you do when everyone is both a fisherman and a farmer. Being invited to a massive feast was the pinnacle of this, not really what you would associate with living sustainably...
*Travelling all over the Pacific with a focus on conservation was a massive eye-opener for me. It brought my attention to a whole new meaning of conservation, understanding peoples dynamic and shifting relationship with nature, ingrained in their culture and practices for generations and generations.
The vulnerability of these island nations to climate changed biodiversity loss, and the direct effect this has on their livelihoods was a big shock for me. It really made me rethink the level of urgency needed for the world to tackle these problems.
So the next 3 videos (2/3) are a sort of natural response to me trying to understand these dynamics, mainly being wow'd by indigenous methods of conservation and the disastrous consequences of what life could be like if we don't get our priorities straight.*

Kalahngan Rodney, it comes to light with a paradoxical juxtaposition when a little reminder from someone 'mehn waih' brings us back to the way of the islander. We look at the way we deal with personal trash and we can also realize our departure from the way of the islander. Pohnpeians (and all FSM) must reach into their traditional, spiritual and governmental values and must wake up to our small nation's needs! Preservation!

There isn't enough conservation done in Pohnpei that can guarantee sustainability for the future when the government don't enforce it environmental laws dictated by its laws. One can see it clearly around the island these environmental damages, dredge reefs and filled wetlands. It's a shame that creed can overcome preservation of this once a beautiful island! Thanks for your great contribution to Micronesia!

You are romanticizing them. What you show us is definitely wonderful. But it isn't sustaining the whole population. I just finished watching someone else's video showing a food stand where every dish for sale was non-local food and most was bad for health or it was made bad by the cooking. I've spent hours by hospital beds and kidney dialysis centers in Honolulu visiting Micronesians made sick by that food. Then there is the addiction to alcohol and sakau. Heart breaking.
I love the Micronesian character. They are sweet, funny, and smart. I almost married into the community. Instead I learned to eat right and take care of my health. My ex, who married someone else, is dead now, as are our other friends who returned home. My health is good and getting better. Not the least because I don't do drugs or eat what was at the food stand. I hope not to be a burden on my community and to teach that a healthy life is possible well into old age. Pohnpei could do that too.
