I'm 60 and never would me or my brothers and sisters ever would have huffed and puffed and talk back to our parents, my daddy made us go to our big tree in our front yard and get our own switch , you knew what you had to clean and keep your room clean and yes mam no mam and yes sir no sir 😮😮😮

My grandfather raised me. He was a WWII vet. I can't imagine the consequences of telling him to get out of "my" room. He's been dead almost 25 years, and I still probably wouldn't be able to sit down if I had told him that.

As someone raised with gentle but firm guidance, I assure you that it works... IF you do that from the very beginning. Starting off hard core then trying to reparent gently will get your hopes dashed. You'll be back to hardcore parenting after the first smart mouth comment and door slam. You'll have to. Your child testing you for soft spots now. 😂
This is exactly what happened to me with my first two kids. I have 6 now. But I thought I would try gentle parenting just to see if it worked and man it was hel.l My kids put me through it for a good week and I went back to being firm with them with direct consequences (good or bad) they straightened up asap. I learned my lesson and shake my head every time I see a parent in public trying "gently" discipline as the tantrum get worse with each "Please can you behave?" line they throw out.

My 13 year old has chores - not cos we are "telling him what to do", rather cos he lives in the house. Everyone has to clean up just cos they're a part of the house. He also knows that if he doesn't wanna do chores, and he'd rather treat the house as a hotel, that's fine - but then he will pay rent. So one way or another, he's working to keep a roof over his head and a bed under his backside. All part of being a person in a society.

The issue with "gentle parenting" is so many parents start using it too late and then claim it doesn't work when it fails. You have to start from the very beginning. It also doesn't mean not disciplining your kid. You give them expectations and when they don't fulfil them, you take away privileges and you have to be firm and unwavering about it. You also want the consequences to be proportionate to the offense. For example, if the school calls and says your kid was bullying another kid for wearing clothes from Goodwill, you make your child wear only Goodwill clothes for a while.
The real issue is parents are told to choose. The truth is you need a toolbox full of approaches and your kids need to know you are down for whatever. Gentle works for some kids but others need that rod once or twice. LOL
Let's hear it for the rod. Especially when one's has a mule!!

I clearly remember gentle parenting and a little rod worked until I hit 13 then all hell broke loose then my parents had to switch up with rod/ consequences/ lecture/ taking everything fun away/ letting my teachers ,principal and friends know when I misbehaved….by the time I went away to college I was straight as an arrow 😂God bless them for caring enough to pour into me and prepare me for life ❤
