I was disappointed to see Brett say they had somehow patented the hip design. It's an obvious design, so if they got a patent on it then it should be challenged. These patents end up just being a way to keep the little guy out since companies like Figure and BD have lots of obvious patents, so if one sues the other, then they just settle on a cross licensing agreement and carry on, but then if a little guy comes along they will shoot them down with patent infringement, and the little guy can't afford to fight it. So it's basically the reverse of what the patent system was designed for.

"Figure's" waist design is actually petman's ankle design from 2009 (15 years ago!) that they just slapped as a waist design and now claim Boston dynamics copied their design.
It's also the design for the first version of atlas's ankle back in 2013.
Brett trying really hard to earn his last name right now.

The extreme flexability of the of the joints would lend itself to doing things on the assembly line that a human can't.

The robot doesn't need to nod yes or no for movements. All it has to do, is change the light color between Red/Green and maybe include Yellow for warning... Though warning could also be flashing red...

The head and torso both swiveled counterclockwise 180 degrees and pivoted clockwise 180 degrees. Does this mean that it can only pivot one direction?

7:13 as to the height, it makes sense making it smaller for development, because, same as with children, the falls are from lower height and thus not damaging the machine so easily as falls of a fully grown human sized bots. And again, easy to grow in the next iteration; the drawback is the interaction with the real world - the height of the work bench is different, also the hand tools are made for adult size etc (maybe its hands are the grown up size?)

The more the bot has a human form and motion the better it works all across all uses. That makes production easier and ramping up the total number of bots produced. It's also easier to train one body style over having lots of different styles to train. Tesla Optimus is going to be useful in all environments.

Using the outlet on the floor behind the bot and scaling it up slightly for perspective I came up with 4.375" for the outlet box size and the bot is just over 9 full boxes which would make it approximately in the 5' 1 in to 5' 2 in range.

Isn't the similarity of Optimus to humans, including the natural motion ranges, one intentional constraint that Elon programmed into it, and the reason being that it shouldn't scare people by unnatural movements? It's also a security issue for cooperation with other humans - when people around it expect it making its next movements in the same way as humans do, it seems better/safer than when the "thing" suddenly turns its head and legs 180° and goes the opposite way. But time will tell, and programming this haunting moves isn't too hard if needed.

Everyone is going to want a piece of the action with robots. Who really knows who's ahead at this point. My suspicion is it's Tesla because of it's engineering/AI prowess, and my money is backing Tesla. The head guy at Figure has shown to be good at raising capitol, as he did for Archer Aviation, (and left with a bunch of $$ then starting Figure) but is not an engineer. Ponder that for a moment.

So it seems that the Bot war is heating up. Interesting how Boston Dynamics Atlas for many years just performed highly scripted party tricks and not useful for much else. Now all of a sudden it's beginning to look like they have upped their game and have finally started to develop a potentially usable bot. Competition among the bot makers is driving rapid advancement as no one wants to be left behind.

I saw a somewhat believable chart on reddit that puts the new Atlas at 5'9" tall and 180 pounds, Optimus at 5'11" and 103 pounds, Figure 01 at 5'6" and 121 pounds, Agility Digit at 5'9" and 146 pounds, Unitree H1 at 5'11" and 103 pounds, Sanctuary AI Phoenix at 5'6" and 154 pounds. The new Atlas looks like it has heavy, beefy actuators, lots of metal, and lots of cooling fans, so makes sense that it would be the heaviest. They are probably going after heavy industrial tasks that are too strenuous for a human to perform.
