  • My second experiment with DCC-EX++ was with an Arduino Mega, motor shield and wifi shield to run an independent automation on my return loop branch line. This is controlled by EngineDriver on an old Android smart phone. the simple script allows many loco sounds, loco lights and one starter signal and one turnout to be automatically controlled. The automation and loco are selected form EngineDriver and the "HandsOff" automation started, the train then runs for two journeys around the return loop and back to the station. So that at the end of the second trip it is facing the same way as when it started. For the mainline I wanted to retain my existing NCE PowerCab command station so I fiddled around with an Arduino Nano and some, to me, quite complicated code to produce a sketch with the help of some of the MERG members. it worked, however firstly it was complex for me and secondly I just couldn't slow down the servos for the signal control. I then discovered that I could use DCC-EX++ on an Arduino Mega, with no motor shield and no input to the tracks - I used two IR sensors to control the signal movements. With a very simple script I have the result together with bouncing signals! My layout is very loosely based on Plymouth (SR) so yes the GWR lower quadrant junction signal is prototypical - Friary Junction was controlled by the GWR or Western Region!
