Interstellar Travel: Could NASA's Warp Drive Make It Possible?

- IXS Enterprise is a conceptual interstellar superluminal spacecraft designed by NASA scientist Dr. Harold G. White, revealed at SpaceVision 2008, designed for the goal of achieving warp travel. The conceptual spacecraft would make use of a modified version of the Alcubierre drive. Dr. White is currently running the White-Juday warp-field interferometer experiment in order to develop a proof of concept for Alcubierre-style warp travel, if possible. The Alcubierre drive uses exotic matter (not to be confused with antimatter) to travel faster than light.
While the concept had been out since 2008 the design of IXS Enterprise was popularized in June 2015 after a series of media outlets reported on the conceptual artwork done by Dutch artist Mark Rademaker in collaboration with NASA.
The energy required to power the warp drive, according to White, is approximately the negative (negative energy is required for the Alcubierre drive concept to function) mass-energy equivalence of Voyager 1, which has a mass of approximately 700 kilograms. Using E=mc2, -700 kilograms of mass is equivalent to ~-63 exajoules of energy (this number is not definitive and can be further reduced). The ship has two thick outer rings (to reduce required energy) that generate the warp field-a contraction of space ahead, and expansion of space behind it. The space inside the rings is optimized to fit more space for cargo, crew and equipment.

Imagine if this proves possible...
@@thunderbird1921 it is possible, assuming we somehow gain access to negative matter or figure out more about dark matter
@@squidblaster3327 Effectively saying "it is possible, provided magic exists"
@@squidblaster3327 well with our understanding it's not possible because we don't know if negative mass exists
@@squidblaster3327 it's not negative mass we need to figure out it's negative energy, so we definitely need to learn more about how dark matter and dark energy works and if we can manipulate them
If money was no object, the main thing stopping us from making this a reality is the obscene power requirement. The lowest amount so far is a 100% E=Mc^2 conversion of 700KG of matter to pure energy. For reference, if a car achieved 100% mass conversion efficiency, you would be able to drive it for the entirety of it's usable life with just one drop of petrol/gas.
Saying it's a metric butt-ton of energy needed is a massive understatement. We would need to tame and maintain a full blown black hole for the power supply, and we would need to shovel in an astronomical amount of matter per second to keep it going and avoid it obliterating the ship in a full blown nova event.
Last time i read about this the energy requirement was reduced in calculation to something like the mass of Jupiter. A lot less than a black hole.

Would a nuclear fusion reactor or two be anywhere near enough? They're only experimental right now, but have like 50-100x the energy potential of almost anything else energy built by man.

Think about Quantum Computers helping with big algorithms for warp drives, warp drive energy, other things space exploration related, and so much more.
Why isn't this being talked about in youtube videos.
Check a playlist about Searching for Dark Matter and Dark Energy with a Quantum Computer, on my other channel.

Amazing! A starship with an engine that can deliver even only 1G of constant acceleration would open up the entire solar system up to the far reaches of the Kuiper belt.
Who else was expecting a star wars/Star trek warp jump?
I mean this concept is directly inspired by star trek
And it could actually become a reality once we develop the technology

Just one step closer to reaching new Earths! That should be the ultimate goal of NASA and not just reaching Mars
It is being researched, but there are some significant issues still be worked out. We need negative energy to form the form field, something that can repeal instead of attract. We don't know for sure if this exists. It's possible it does exist and that it is dark energy.
Second issue, you have to figure out how to navigate at superluminal speeds. You can't see what's in front of you unless it's already passed you. Our best science indicates tachyons or other particles traveling faster than light either don't exist, or are inaccessible to us.
Third issue, stopping. Stopping a ship would release a ton of energy. This is actually probally the least problematic issue as ships could be stopped outside the solar system and travel in at sublight speeds. The energy release seems to be more of a problem if the ship travels at superluminal speeds.
Fourth problem, radiation. Traveling faster than light, an huge amount of radiation would be blue shifted and forced at the crew.
Problem 1 is really the whole key. We can probably figure out the rest of the problems though, but I do agree, we have to look to the future.
@@FFGuy-eu7hrYou best brush up on your Klingon boi. - A message from His Imperial and Royal Majesty, Kaiser Wilhelm der Groß.
@@FFGuy-eu7hr I don't understand much but a lot of that is wrong.
1st thing is that negative energy is not dark energy, which while it does have a say in the speed of which the universe expands, it doesn't warp space at all otherwise.
2nd is that stopping isn't the same as being decelerated. This isn't going faster than light, but "warping" space in-front and behind it, therefore not even moving at all. While still tremendously energy intensive, it'll have the same energy cost as decelerating.
3rd is that space inside the heliosphere (magnetic field of the solar system) is about 200 rems of radiation, while in interstellar space it averages at about 70 rems. So if space vessels in the solar system can withstand 200 rems, which they already can, then I think it can handle 70.
@@FFGuy-eu7hr good news, problem 1 has been solved. Turns out you wont need negative energy, however you still need a couple hundreds mass of jupiter to create a warp bubble. I found that from here czcams.com/video/ES8dwIrWI2I/video.html , correct me if im wrong
@@FFGuy-eu7hr they say anything faster than light breaks causality which is primitive thought.Einsteins theory says Anything traveling faster than light will reverse time. But if time reverse backwards, there is no way for any object to gain more speed than light. So causality will never be broken in 3D universe. The real problem is on our understanding of common physics which can't be applied on a warped bubble.Nobody have seen the nature of warp bubble.Nobody knows how time flows on warp bubble.

Has anyone made floor plans for the interior of this proposed craft? I cannot even find 'fan' speculations. I just want to imagine what each section is for and how it would accommodate its crew. As always insane work. I have one question though. I believe warp drives of this nature are supposed to compress the space in front fo them and expand the space behind them thereby "pulling" the ship through space without actual acceleration which gives the ability to travel faster than light without experiencing the issues Einstein pointed out about it not being possible normally to travel that fast. If i remember rightly and this is the case shouldn't the visual of the bubble be smaller at the front than the rear of the ship to show the compression and expansion? Should it not appear more cone shaped? A lay persons daft question most likely but I thought I'd ask ;~)
Most warp bubbles are calculated with a spherical geometry in mind, since it's the simplest to analyze. We just don't have the ability to do more than that right now.
@Ted Cameron Nah, you're right. Not necessarily a cone, but it should look a bit squashed.

Sometimes I think how much today looks like science fiction. Japan is buiding a (while rather slow) gundam, we are thinking about warp drives and soon the first humans will step into mars surface in 2024, what a time to be alive, and what a species to be.
Humans will not step on Mars in 2024. That’s ridiculous. Not even Elon believes that anymore (2026 isn’t much better, though).
And besides, 2024 (or 2026) wouldn’t be the landing date, it’d be the launch date. If, magically, a manned mission go Mars launched in 2024 or 2026, they’d land in 2025/2027, since SpaceX is expecting a 6-9 month trip to Mars (which isn’t feasible for health reasons; nine months of zero gravity followed by a year and a half in 40% gravity followed by another nine months of zero gravity would be disastrous. Imagine them trying to stand when they get back to Earth).
I doubt people will land on Mars this decade, let alone in four years. Early to mid 2030s as an international public/private partnership is much more realistic.
Maybe we'll finally go beyond our little planet and see the wonders and nightmares that hide beyond
What is the proposed "speed" of this concept and how does it avoid collisions with random objects out in space? Thank you; great video!
It moves at many times the speed of light and it creates a space bubble around it that makes the debris move along with it without harming the spacecraft
The ship applies Alcubierre Warp Drive so it's probably 10 times faster than Light.
(10 x FTL) which is 1,862,823 mi/s
(10.7x10^9) = 10,792,528,487 km/h (6.70x10^9) = 6,706,166,293 mph
I did calculations by converting 10c which is light year to it 😅 I'm not really sure tho it's just my opinion. If you actually divide all of it by comparing their thesame units you'll get 10.0 answer.
Also the ship can travel 10 Light-Years a day which means it can arrive to Alpha Centuari which is 4.3 Light-Years in just a matter of 2 weeks and It also just takes 75 seconds to reach Mars.
Speed requires energy, large amount of negative energy then insane will be the speed. Moreover, warp speed is counted according to the factors
Warp factor 1 = 100% speed of light
Warp factor 2 = 8 times the 100% of speed of light
I read somewhere that said that a warp drive would create a super powerful beam that is caused because of a bunch of particles building up around the bubble not sure how accurate it is though.
El motor de Miguel Alcubierre una gran teoria del fisico Mexicano 🇲🇽
It is not Alcubierre's engine. Alcubierre's work is the Calculations which in turn were taken from the General Theory of Relativity. His work consisted in developing the Calculations that allowed to clear the energy levels necessary to deform the space in such a way as to create a bubble-space-time around an object (ship). Alcubierre in said Calculus even cited that due to the enormous amount of energy that was needed for that, he maintained that it was impossible unless we had exotic matter (that is, a matter "X" that had negative mass). In summary; The Bubble-space-time theory, and impulse-gravity motors belong to theories elaborated after Albert-Einstein, who also held at the time that time, for an object close to, for example, the event horizon of a Black hole remains stopped, and whoever was standing there, would see how all the events in the universe would pass, without time passing from that point of view of the observer. In the end what he was saying, even though he did not name it; is that said observer; being within the deformation of space that the black hole exerts on space, it would be directly wrapped (so to speak) by the fabric of space, and at the same time as if it were absent from all the events that occurred in it (That is, the equivalent to be inside a space-time bubble). Shortly after, and immediately after Einstein, ideas of how to power spacecraft were born; among which is the gravity-drive-motor. In summary, these Theories ARE NOT FROM ALCUBIERRE, but the Calculations I mentioned, whose Work is called: "La Métrica de Alcubierre".

I know the if a grain of sand traveling with the speed of light would hit the earth it would be catastrophic, the energy is immense. I wonder what would happen with the ship, traveling at this speed in its own space-time bubble, if it would hit something similar. Would it still hit the object or would the object go around it?
