In case anyone is worried, the baby bunny is fine and back outside living under the shed where it belongs. She "soft" carried it until she came in and I asked her what's in her mouth. Then she let it loose in the house. She was really proud of herself.

A lot of dogs lack "theory of mind" which allows one to distinguish what someone else likely does and does not know. I think this may just be a function of us seeming like sorcerers to dogs.. they probably find it safer to assume we always know what they know.

I'd rsther be afraid he's got something in his mouth that can sting, bite or anything like that. My cats sometimes bring home little snakes. They are not dangerous here but I'd rather not have anything similar on my hand just because I wanna take it out of his mouth. For this reason my dogs always learn a command to spit it out, in return they get a treat. You just need to keep an eye on whether they start picking up everything just for you to give them a treat in return. Mine tried, they even picked the same thing up over and over again to force me to give them a treat 😂

They were determined but chaos ensued when a good-sized mouse jumped from their dog's mouth and ran down the hall. At least a rock will not eat through wiring and cause a house fire. (Love that precious face! And those soulful eyes!)

Buddy carries in half a ton of shredded bark mulch every time he's been in the yard. The curse of longhaired dachshunds. They become one with nature so quickly. His own personal gillie suit. If melty tree sap is involved shaving may be necessary to free his legs from his sides. Just all glued up.

My dogs have picked up all sorts of things in their mouth and tried to bring them inside: bugs, moths, a tiny toad (It was alive! I saw a wiggling foot hanging out of my dog's mouth), a baby bird, parts of a dead chipmunk, and a dead baby rabbit! I would offer a treat, and they usually would drop* the "find" in order to get the treat. *The 'trade' doesn't always work!
Mine would swallow first, then grab the treat! Better to get it out before you end up driving 2 hours in the middle of the night to the emergency room and $5000 stomach surgery!
