A war so short that you could oversleep and miss the whole thing.
Indeed. It's weird to think about, but this video lasts for over half the duration of the entire war.
And now you know why the line: "The Sultan of Oman lives in Zanzibar now! That's just where he lives..." is in the Bill Wurtz's "History of Word, I Guess".
So true.👍🏻😂
I was looking for a comment like this. Thank you!
Yes. I just saw this. Always figured there was a reason it was brought up. But with so many lines in that video I feel like a child carrying two dozen books 📚. Where do I start, and I haven't gotten to that one yet.
This video is just 15 minutes short of the actual time of the war.
That would have been a nice gimmick to end the video.
Make it exactly as long as the war itself.
A war so short that a CZcams video about it is almost as short.
My favorite odd war is the Pig War between the US and Britton over the San Juan Islands. The only casualties were two US solders who got drunk and fell off the American Camp dock and the Hudson's Bay Company pig.
My favorite odd war is the one where Canadians and Danes take turns occupying an empty island in the Atlantic, leaving a bottle of alcohol behind for the other country to enjoy when it's their turn.
My favorite is the Italian War for the bucket.
@@resileaf9501 Neither the Danes nor the Canadians consider it a war. That would be too hostile of a word for both nations. It's just "an unresolved political dispute over the border line". But given that the island has no practical or strategic value it is, of cause, best used for exchanging alcohol between the two nations arctic patrols who must each set foot on the island, at least once annually, to uphold the claim. It is, all in all, just a fine waste of taxpayer money to uphold a training regime of the arctic special forces... and a perfect excuse to drink a bit of warming alcohol in the bitter coldness of a frozen rock right between Greenland and Canada.
I'll never forgive those Limey bastards for what they did to that pig.
The Great Emu War, hands down.
The birds technically won.
…how the heck did I only just learn about this channel. How do you keep track of them all Simon?
Great video, this is the best breakdown of the conflict I’ve seen
The baller move would have been to stretch this video out until it was longer than the actual war. 🤣
I's pretty safe to assume though the video took a lot longer to make (and plan) then the actual war (again, both planning and the actual war part) :p
I love how the official response from London was basically
“The Queen and the boys said it’s all good mate, just don’t fuck up”
1:10 - Chapter 1 - The edge of paradise
5:05 - Chapter 2 - Moral exploitation
8:55 - Chapter 3 - The protectorate
13:25 - Chapter 4 - Gunboat diplomacy
17:15 - Chapter 5 - The shortest war
20:35 - Chapter 6 - The bitter end
The hen and speeding locomotive analogy had me absolutely fucking dying!
That's when "BWAARK!" turns to "CHO-CHOO... SPLAT!" real damn fast...
I recall seeing a British comic from the period of a grandfatherly figure wearing a pith helmet and khaki uniform with a small child on his lap. The child asks, “Grandpa, what was the war like?” And the grandfather answers, “I don’t know my boy, I was having tea at the time.”
Great video Simon. Someday I'd love to see a video about the 1858 Utah War when James Buchanan sent an invasion force into the Utah Territory to remove Brigham Young, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Governor of the Utah Territory.
The war had no open battles between US forces and the Mormons, but the tensions around the invasion led to several Native American uprisings and the infamous Mountain Meadows Massacre in which a Mormon militia killed over 120 peaceful migrants who were unlucky enough to be passing through on their way to California.
Nobody talks about the Utah War because it is understandably overshadowed by Bleeding Kansas and the US Civil War. However, it's still an important part of Utah's and the United States' history.
9:42 ".. like telling modern London to wean itself off Russian oligarch money" - nice one Simon.
I'm only left with one question... "What happened to the freed slaves? Did they suddenly magically get a dignified life? Or did they only become free in name but held on a food-and-shelter-is-payment regime that practically ensured that they didn't have any resources to improve their situation?"
It morphed to colonialism. Then, segregation. Now it's called human trafficking and in most capitalist nations labeled minimum wage
From what I've seen, I'm pretty sure Mike Tyson could have conquered Zanzibar.
Hey, Simon great video as always. I would like to request the Crimean War as it is a war that shaped the political alliances of Europe in the post-Napoleonic era and was also the penultimate nail in the coffin of the Ottoman Empire.
I have never understood why the British were so opposed to slavery in places like Zanzibar but were willing to support the slave-holding Confederate states against the slave-opposing Union States during the American Civil war.
Hypocrisy in politics is nothing new.
because most Americans dont know much about history if they did they would know Britain stayed neutral during the war.
*"The Sultan of Oman lives in Zanzibar now! That's just where he lives."*
I'm proud if my colonial heritage, we were playing by the rules of the age, we just happened to be damn good at it.
Damn straight!!! We just didn't factor in the vanquished waiting a few hundred years before getting uppity.
Very interesting and informative great work is always
To anyone wondering what happened to the palace itself, it was torn down and rebuilt with the replacement still standing today. It continued to be used until 1964 when the Sultanate was overthrown. It was used for many purposes over the years but today exists as more or less Zanzibar’s primary museum
You do a great job explaining complicated wars, thank you!
Could you please do the Spanish Civil War?
16:56 - lol 😂😂😂
Says the inevitable fate quite clearly! 🇴🇲 🐔v🚂 🇬🇧
I have been to Oman (2017) we had no hard feelings.
A lot of the Omani locals considered Khalid brave, but foolish and mad 😒
Hello, Simon. I would like to learn more about the Faulkland’s War of the 1980’s. Maybe that could be one to do a video on?
Check out the Wayback history channel’s video on Leopoldo Galtieri and the Falklands war
love the Warogrphics channel keep it up
Another great video.
Well done, Mr. Whistler!
If the Battle of Antietam hasn’t been covered yet, that would be an awesome video to watch!
A mega blaze style video on the civil war (I’m talking like 5 hours) would be lit af
@@Fluffy_production there’s no way Simon would construct something like that. It would take more than just Simon to do the conflict justice; it would take many people with differing viewpoints and opinions to justly describe the utter monstrosity that was the US Civil War. Knowing Simon, I can imagine the video would be...misinformed to say the least.
I’m sure most of the big battles of the Civil War are going to get written.
@@Dank-gb6jn let me guess, a video on the Civil War by Simon & Co would be invalid if it doesn’t focus on “State’s Rights” as the lone cause and not mention a little thing call slavery.
@@SEAZNDragon Hot take. The main thing is Simon’s nationality, and how that would color his viewpoint. You don’t ask an American to discuss the finer points of British history, or Pakistani history; so having a lone Brit do a wildly long breakdown of the US Civil War, all by himself is not only disingenuous to him, but also those of us in the States.
Second, a wildly large video on the US Civil War *SHOULD* hit everything as best as possible, whether those views are accurate, inaccurate, somewhere in the middle, or completely unfounded. It doesn’t pay to completely ignore one viewpoint while exalting another.
Beautiful telling
so, the war lasted 38min, why the hell is this video not 38 minutes long? what a missed chance
Imagine taking an hour's nap and you slept through an entire war
It's outrageous that you would conflate Britain's righteous crusade against the evil of slavery with colonialism. Firstly, colonialism had both good and bad effects. Secondly, Britain's anti-slavery crusade is perhaps the proudest moment in our nation's history as it was carried out with no benefit for us. It cost us huge sums of money, and the lives of many sailors.
The control of the seas and colonialism expanded worldwide in strategic routes against other rivals and local kingdoms
I salute the effort and no power eradicated slavery like British on the world stage but an empire like any other expanded their power influence trade and territories oh did I say riches
Always love heroic tale of Zanzibar protecting their right to enslave against evil abolition Empire.
Pre-abolition Britain: "Hmm, virtually every other civilisation in world history was right - this slavery thing is a frightfully profitable business..."
Post-abolition Britain: "YOU BAWBAGS BETTER NAW BE DOING SLAVERY OVER THERE!"
Half the size of Rhode Island. I’m so American that I understand that method of measurement.
With you being American, I'm shocked that you know where Rhode Island is.
@@phuckpootube6231 I didn’t say I know where it is. Just that it is 86 times smaller than my home state and thus I understand the method of measurement. Pretty sure it borders Kentucky and Idaho.
I’d love to see something about the Anglo-Zulu conflicts on this channel

USA: *civil war about slavery (among many other things)*
UK: *literally declares war on slavery*
Slavery wasn’t banned in some African countries until the 1980s. And slavery wasn’t banned in Pakistan until 1994. The English were hundreds of years ahead of some countries in fighting this odious practice.
GOD DAMN IT SIMON, STOP MAKING SO MANY CHANNELS! I HAVE A FUCKING LIFE, YOU KNOW!?!?
Praise the Blaze Brothers!
You should do the croatian war of independence or yugoslav wars in general.
Again, the word "bin" simply means son of. So "Sultan Said Bin" means Sultan Said son of-. Pointing it out because you seem to fall for this mistake in most videos including Arabian characters
The Sultan Of Oman lives in Zanzabar now.
So 14:56 14:56 me people might complain about stereotypes here...but Basil Cave...lol and Lord Salisbury... it somehow feels like I stepped into a cooking show
In relation to the ending of Slavery in Britain, a biographics video on William Wilberforce might be really good
A better video would be Britain's neck deep, centuries long involvement in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and how its evil proceeds helped propel Britain's Industrial Revolution and the growth of the City of London. But I know this will never happen. When it comes to slavery, Brits never ever want to think of themselves as among the worse in human history, which they without a doubt were, but as the 'good guys; who tried to end the evil practice.
Give the British credit, they got rid of slavery on Zanzibar.
"Better luck next time, hmmmmmmm?" Hahahahahaha
Slavery still occurs in the Middle East and east Africa.
Where in east Africa???....am from east Africa and I have never seen slavery
@@amoskariuki5967 from my limited understanding, it's not like what you would think of a "slavery", but more like indentured servitude. It happens in East Asia 🌏 as well.
Basically in Asia it is having someone work for you, but paying them almost nothing and not allowing them to seek other employment, and/or just taking their identification papers or passport so they are unable to leave. Usually immigrants. There was some big shot from India or China, can't remember which, had a "maid" that they brought with them. They were part of that nations mission to the United Nations, so they lived in the New York city, but something having to do with diplomatic immunity kept them from being charged in the US for violating slavery laws.
@@renaissanceredneck3695 if thats the case then I guess it's only USA and Europe where slavery doesn't exist.....here in Africa the elites control everything.... which explains why it is so underdeveloped as they only serve their interests
Indentured servitude does not equal slavery, the Irish experienced that but they weren’t slaves
More Fact boy more!!!!.....keep up the good work cast and crew
Oh hell yeah, been waiting for you to cover this. Found out about it as a young kid because it was on my birthday lol, but never seen a deep dive video on it.
It would be nice to Simon could do a video on the troubles between British Honduras and Guatemala especially over the road that never was built.
At 2:38 "the Rule 34 of trade" is perhaps the most conflicted and cursed thing I have recently heard. A heartfelt LOL.
I wonder if Warographics will cover non-violent wars, such as Gandhi's hunger strike, or any war of words, like in the courtroom... 🤔
Hi Simon! Can you do a video on the Battle of Gettysburg?
Can you cover the 1974 invasion of Cyprus? Think it would make an interesting video.
One of your best
I don’t think the British were entirely the villains in this story
They actually fought for freedom, unlike some idiots we see today who just whine about it.
The new Sultan they backed did abolish slavery later on TBF.
Quite
80% villain is better than 100%, I suppose.
The Empire had a history of looking the other way regarding slavery when it was politically convenient. Every time they intervened somewhere in the name of stopping slavery, they stood to gain something by doing so, but they looked the other way when the Confederacy started building ships in British shipyards, for example. When standing up against slavery overseas could have actually cost them something, they tended to stay quiet. But when it helped their colonial ambitions...
The war was not about slavery , slavery was already abolished by that time. Zanzibar was already under British mandate(colonized) ,the war was about British forcing to implant a Sultan from Oman , instead of the rightful heir from Zanzibar.
The reason I listen to Simon rather than any other CZcamsr: "Bok!"
Going to visit Zanzibar in October, cool to learn some history beforehand :)
Missed opportunity to make a video as long as a War. Just needed about 20ish more minutes XD
Oh well was fascinating to watch a Video of a rather obscure war.
This video was damn near as long as the war it's about.
Can you do the First Sino Japanese War please?
The sultans yacht HH Glasgow was actually built as a gunboat in 1878, armed with 7x 87mm guns. She was one of several Zanzibari gunboats, the others were Dar ed Salam, Chukwani and two smaller steam gunboats one named Chwaka. Dar es salam was in Oman when the war started, Chukwani was captured and Chwaka and several smaller Gunboats were sunk by HMS Raccoon.
Good video 👍
You should do the Bengali Revolt of 1857 next.
“They want a battle. We shall give them a war.”
Interesting video
Please do a Warographics episode on the WW1 Battle of the Somme. Love what you are doing on all your channels too, keep that shit up!
“History’s shortest war” & Fact Boy still makes it a 25 min video.
The Battles of Kawanakajima would make an incredible episode if you're looking for any ideas
imperial aggression... to put down a group that would've never stopped slaving otherwise... how evil and colonial
Would you consider covering the battle of Guadalcanal? Major turning point in the war for the Pacific imo. Curious to see what new information you share that I'm unaware of, as is always the case!
I'd watch it
You should cover the West Virginia Coal Wars
16:10 Basically saying "Do what you want, just don't get your men killed" lmao
Simon you're wrong about Tanzania; it has several world attractions chief being the Ngorongoro Crater
Missed a golden opportunity to make a video longer than the war itself
I hope we see a video about the Battle of Omdurman soon. That was a magnificent triumph of British arms, and it was recorded for publication by none other than Winston Churchill.
I super want a Biographics on the Oman empire and some of their emperors
The original sultan of Zanzibar was "Said bin Sultan", not Said Bin. Also, the British naval war against the Omani shipping was less about slaves being sent to the Arabian peninsula/Persian Gulf (although that was the stated reason) because that market during those decades was largely saturated at the time (having fully staffed the Omani date plantations in the 1810s and 1820s) -- it ended up being about destroying the Omani merchant fleet (because, in theory, they "could" double as a navy and there were slaves working the ships -- almost all of the slaves were sent to the Americas at that time) in favor of primarily Gujarati merchant vessels which were owned by British subjects. BTW: The British in 1870 wanted to force the importation of English cotton goods (remember Indians could not make their own cotton goods) instead of the brisk trade in American cotton goods, which were of higher quality -- by 1865 this had fallen off a lot because of Confederate raiders (CSS Alabama and Shenandoah) or at least fear of them. Final note: most slaves on these ships had been captured as children from deep inside the continent. They were liberated on the coast and left to fend for themselves even though they had no idea where they were -- they were freed without their consent, whether they wanted it or not.
Good job btw, not withstanding my comments
Whatever happens, we have got,
the Maxim gun, and they have not
- Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953)
"Said Bin"... Seriously? Bin means 'son of' so you just cut short his name to Said Son of...... what? You can say anything here I guess, but it is son of Sultan.
So this video is nearly half as long as the war it's documenting. 🤔
This video is longer then half the war
This video is more than half of the war
No offense, but I could watch an episode of Brain Blaze longer than that war. Nice to know the story behind it though.
Dude in the thumbnail looks like Joe Gatto in a turban
You should cover "The War of the Bucket"
Simon, Factmeister, every time you say you'll link to something on the screen at the end of a video, we can be sure you're linking to something else on the screen. Are you trying to tell us something?
Wow you guys managed to stretch a 38 minute war into a 23 minute video.
the usa wasnt a major global power before its civil war, it was mostly viewed by europe as a country of farmers
As the clock tower was hit, I guess that was someone’s idea of how to kill time
This video is almost as long as the entire war.
This video is almost longer than the war itself

How long was the war in the Conch Republic?
The good old 'Divide and Conquer' always wins it for British colonialism.
