At 17:00. In areas where temperatures can drop to -50 C°, you'll find inside temperatures of an igloo to be 20 to 70 degrees warmer than the outside temperatures. Occasionally they may reach as high as +50 to +60 degrees inside the igloo. And yes Tanner, things do melt, but it then usually turns back into solid ice. There's also a small hole on the top to vent the heat of your fire.

They also don’t have “Camp fires” inside, Inuit used Stone Lamps with small flames for heat. Snow is an amazing insulator so that little amount heat can easily warm up the Igloo.
Re: Igloos. The air outside is so cold that the ice loses the heat quick enough to not melt. Basically, if the igloo is built in a way (how, I have no idea lol) to lose the heat at least as quickly as it gets heated it won't melt. You cannot melt ice if it does not retain any heat. It's actually really cool "early tech" :D It also helps that the fire is kept at the center of the Igloo, farthest away from the walls ... which helps keep the balance between heat generated and heat lost to the cold outside.

when igloos are formed, they use structures that were talked about in this video. Then the permafrost forms around the outside of the igloo (from how cold the weather is and the overall temperature outside) and keeps that outside ice from melting. then you can light a fire from the inside and have the temperature 50 degrees F while the outside of the igloo can be -50 degrees F. but because the permafrost from the outside keeps the ice from melting, you can survive in there while having a sturdy structure.

I don't know if they will ever gonna read this or what, but I have just started again watching Matthias' videos. I stopped since I need to focus on college and After graduating, I started teaching so my me time got so caught up. Your content is great! I love the puns! From someone that english is not a native language, It really helps me to learn more vocabs and stuff. I also use these puns to somehow put some humor to my teaching. I am an english teacher btw. Before, I'm just watching while reading subtitles, but now I could just watch without it. (It's not that of a big deal, I know) TL;DR THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION :)

Igloos are warm!! However, they're **relatively** warm. Where these guys are usually built, it's around -30 F AT LEAST when building, without windchill. You can start fires inside, but they usually have these little lamps they use instead. It can be warm inside because they're made of SUPER compacted snow. Because it's so cold outside, whatever melts instantly freezes again whenever it gets exposed to the elements, so the already compacted snow turns into this really odd textured ice (Did some archaeology work with some Inuit in Alaska). The bricks these dudes are made out of are hard as stone, and they're cut with knives! They're not any sort of long term housing though. Houses exist and are much more preferable in the Arctic Circle haha.

Hi I'm Canadian and I built a small ish igloo with my brother one year. Basically what happens is the inside of the igloo melts ever so slightly and the drops condense on the snow and freeze over again so you get this layer of ice on the inside that insulates it. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Snow is actually a really good insulator, it has lots of tiny pockets of non-moving air which makes it really good at keeping in or blocking out heat
Igloos keep u warm from the air in the snow insulating u, fires on the inside can make it slightly melt but it freezes it again making it stronger.

I have built and slept in two separate igloo in two separate years (both made by piling tons of snow, packing it in and hollowing the inside of it with a Tupperware container, the first year only me and my mom wanted to sleep in it, but the next year, my family of 4 wanted to sleep in it; my mom, dad little brother and me) they both were surprisingly warm because in a small space, body warmth radiates of the icy walls of the igloo, acting as thermal insulation for body heat. The same concept is shown when arctic wolves burrow underneath the snow to warm up. Keep in min that this was written by a thirteen year old boy with no outside help except my sheer knowledge.

For the igloo question ( i am canadian) snow is actualy a pretty good insulator some times. Yes it can get warm in an igloo but not warm enough to take of all your winter gear.
