    I know Joel has got to feel so blessed that a new generation of young farmers are picking his brain about farming. Knowledge is worthless unless it is shared. I know it is a pleasure to share knowledge with those who will actually use it.

      Yes, and I am an older woman with a 35-acre ranch that I can't run anymore and no kids and thinking about legacy. Today I connected with a young man who wants to come out and start a small farm here. We are both so excited and we connected on Joel Salatin s website! Because of an interview he gave on CZcams and mentioned it. Thanks, Joel!

    Salatin's book, "You can farm" changed my whole perspective when he told about creating topsoil every 6 months to a year. Up until then, I thought it took hundreds of years. Such an exciting concept! So began my journey.

    Joel Said it exactly correctly. If “you are” headed in either direction you will get there. Take Heart if your doing it right. You will succeed! I’m rooting for every single one of you. And hoping to join you soon.

    My problem is similar to what you are expressing. I am 66 and in the process of moving to my retirement farm. I grew up on a farm and want to return to the lifestyle and the good food. I am starting with gardening and chickens, expanding from there to include rabbits, pigs and hopefully a milk cow and continually increasing perennials. While I want all those things, I realize at my age things can happen that will limit my abilities.
    My biggest concern is that upon my passing, what I build will be bulldozed for housing development rather than carried and improved in the next generation. My sons who chose a very different lifestyles would immediately sell the property to the highest bidder. It would be so nice to have it go to someone who would start their farm where ever I leave off.

    "A cow knows all she needs to know to be a successful cow". Good point from Joel. Joel talks about getting kids involved in the process of farming or homesteading. My dad got my brother and I involved by "selling" us a calf cheap cheap. That grew into a cow producing calves that either went to market or kept for further expansion of my little herd. :-) Just a neat way for us to start taking ownership of the work as well as the profits and get involved in the lifestyle.

    This one just rolled around on my CZcams and I am very glad it did. I have just finished reading Joel Salatin's Poylface Mico and yesterday purchased two more of his books. I live in a subdivision and this video and his books are a great help for me. Sometimes just making choices about what and when to do something is confusing. Then you need to throw in how and where . Having some help from people who have already handled these problems is a blessing.

    Very good interview format. Most Salatin interviews are so general the little but extremely important details only a lifetime of experience might mention. You asked more pointed questions and he still offers the philosophy but with detail added.
    An example is the mineral mix he gives free choice. I wondered how he gave sea salt and kelp. Finally after years I know it’s not just sea salt but mixed. And he added why he does not do free choice 16 minerals and vitamins in separate compartments which is also a good and common choice among restorative farmers.
    Since some very serious viewers read comments I’m mentioning also about location an added comment. I never hear Alabama in a conversation or CZcams for farming or homesteading. As a professional financial consultant I became a “contrarian” investor in large part. That is that the crowd is usually wring. When the cover of Business Magazine proclaimed “Oil is Dead” when it hit $12 back before you were born, it was the bottom of the oil market-best buying opportunity in 109 years. If everyone is picking Missouri and n one is considering Alabama they are probably wrong.
    I was led by the Lord to start a farm in Alabama ten years ago. Wild story I hope to tell some day in person but I live and remain in the Capitol of Texas-750 Mike’s away. It’s tiny but our motto of “Go Slow or Go Home” combined with your motto works so far.
    It rained 70 inches this year and is almost at the Florida Line meaning the 31st Parallel. That means we get longer winter days of sunlight as in winter and summer grass abundance. Three season gardens and year round grass is worth looking at with land half what it is in your county. We are on a tourist route to Destin and near enough to half a dozen cities but far enough to hold down land costs and taxes. My farm is in Andalusia a beautiful town of 9000+
    So I encourage seekers to be open to seeking out water as Joel said. We get zero snow annually! In fact a hard freeze might not happen in a given year. There are also places in Georgia and Mississippi plus Florida but our location is far enough from Hurricanes and tornadoes in The Dixie Belt north of us. Never had a hail storm in ten years.
    Microclimates happen!

    Just found the channel when searching the area there on CZcams, love the content, love the guest and all his books! Was nice to see an older person with a super smart political and world outlook for a change instead of the ones the propaganda machine has brought up. Hi Miss Shepherdess, me and my childhood friend, we are starting a very small scale farm, we have the area of 2,5 acres (almost) we like to do this like boutique style, we planing to have 100 broiler and 100 layer, together with Angus cow and bull. In two months time, we will do 200 broilers and another hundred layers, what’s the most chicken we can look after in such small place? Weather here is very mild in winter, maybe a month we will feed them in a shelter, a part from this, they will always be outside and rotational controlled grazed! What can you suggest. We are situated in south west of Turkey, close to sea side. Thank you in advance, peace

    How do you find the older farmers who want a younger generation to mentor and take over when they're ready to retire?

  • @agtano2811
    @agtano2811 Před rokem +2

    I can’t wait to purchase the new book. My concern is about the ageing homesteader and what you will need in order to keep the farm going when you are loosing strength. How would you transition into that sort of homesteading if you can’t hire a younger person to do those tasks you used to do.

    • @theShepherdess
      @theShepherdess  Před rokem +2

      That’s a good question. It’s ultimately up to the next generation to pickup the slack.
      You could put out an ad for an internship that provides room and board in exchange for labor. Joel Salatin does this through his stewardship program. 👍🏻

      Also you can’t underestimate the amount moving around keeps your body strong, and healthy. There’s a term often used in medical therapy. Move it or lose it. You can make things simpler by changing the environment. Move smaller portions at a time, shorter distances from storage to feed bins. Make the pathways smoother. Work smarter not harder. But keep moving.
