    I was born in Wolverhampton and grew up just outside it. It was a thriving and growing city in my childhood but I watched it decline rapidly in the early 2010s. Large numbers of businesses closed, including some of the banks (you know a place is in trouble when even the bank doesn't want to stay). It became one of the most desperate towns I've known and I lived in Middlesbrough for 5 years! I never felt unsafe in Middlesbrough but felt VERY unsafe in Wolverhampton on a number of occasions.
    For example;
    >I saw a gun pulled on someone in Whitmore Reans (district of Wolverhampton) one time, they took his phone, wallet and skateboard shoes, the gun was a webley revolver. Didn't know if it was real, didn't want to find out.
    >Someone tried to steal my car off my driveway in broad daylight but I caught them and chased them off with a garden hoe.
    >My weed dealer kept a 2 ft sword and bear mace by his front door because he so often got robbed.
    >A burglar jumped my fence into my garden one time followed moments later by 4 cops and a helicopter, they caught him hiding in a chicken coop.
    >A drink driver crashed into the front of my parents house at over 70mph totalling both their cars and demolishing a stone wall. He was thrown through the windscreen, he survived, locked the car and ran off. Cops found him on the swing set at the local park bleeding and crying.
    >2 years later I saw the same guy get into his car after about 8 pints and crash it into a bus; learned nothing.
    >A man was executed (shot in the head) on a rural road about a mile from my house, they left his body in a ditch on the side of the road. His name was "Kevin Nunes"
    >My cousin (also from Wolverhampton) went to prison for being involved in a "gang related stabbing".
    >Audi, BMW and Mercedes cars were CONSTANTLY getting stolen; found an Audi R8 on fire in a field once having been ditched by thieves, reported it to the cops and had to give a statement. Only part recognisable after the fire was put out was the wire frames of the seats.
    There were good things too though;
    >Some people were friendly, interestingly the poorer people were nicest.
    >Every year the "punks" and the "chavs" would set aside their differences for one day and do amateur bare knuckle boxing in the park, everyone would get along and drink together and there was a great sense of community spirit, it was called "punk fights". Afterwards they'd go straight back to hating each other.
    >The accent is endlessly amusing. Wish I never lost it.
    >Nice beer!
    >Car culture there is awesome with meets and cruises.
    >Some of the bars and nightlife used to be great, spent many a drunken near years eves in the city centre.
    >Where I grew up (a rural village 7 miles from the city centre) was like the village from hot fuzz, only with (slightly) less murder, so I had a good childhood exploring the forests and working on farms etc.
    It was an alright town but neglected by the government and not doing too great when I left. I don't miss living there, but I have some VERY fond memories.

    This was so nice and refreshing to see. I'm not from Wolves originally but moved here from Tenerife back in 2005 and probably lived here for a total (on and off) of 9 years collectively. I've lived in places all over Europe and for me, Wolves has and always will have a very special place in my life. I speak to people all the time about their thoughts and overwhelmingly it seems that the main draw to the city is the location, right near the countryside but close enough to Birmingham to consider it local. 2 hours to London and less than that to the nearest beach (you can see why Americans love it here). Yeah the city has its problems for sure just like anywhere, but Wolves has a lot of up and coming prospects that many are excited to see!

    Wolverhampton is a dump. I've known it all my 70 odd years, and compared to what it was 50/60 years ago it is a depressing hole - and has some of the grottiest areas in the country. I lived in Chapel Ash in the 1960s, and there is no comparison with then and now - but even then you could see that it was going in the direction to what it is now.

The people are wonderful down to earth people. It is where I first tried a curry patty, from the Lomas St chippy just behind the ‘new’ adsa, which are amazing. Great town centre and amazing outside market. The beer which holds a special place in my heart is Banks’s Bitter, what an amazing pint! Well at least it was in the early 90s not had it for a while. I live in W,ton, it's fine.....though it was better in the 1960s/70s. Years ago l could walk down Dudley street: look in burtons, which 30 years ago had good clothes....also foster menswear, C&A, Woolworths, littlewoods, BHS, etc.....all those stores are now gone. And dudley street is a shadow of its former self. There will always be unsavoury people in EVERY city/town, but l have noticed over the last decade or more: there seems to be more....and sorry to be judgemental: yobby types about, and people who reek of cannabis, and f and blind in the city centre, and people having arguments everywhere, also people walking around with beer cans in their hand, and beggars asking for spare change. The mander centre has lost the character it had in the 70s......the main gallery used to have phone boxes, large sculptures, and plants etc. Now it's like an empty aircraft hanger. Times have changed country wide, not just W,ton.......and not for the best. It's people who make a town and city......and the way they behave. Manners, and behaving appropriately seems to be a thing of the past......l have seen many parents in the city centre: f..ing, and blinding at their young children......is it any wonder that morals are in the gutter here, and country wide.....some unfortunately don,t want to make the effort, and that's the top and bottom of it.

    Wolverhampton is great if you walk around looking upwards. The buildings and architecture are amazing but unfortunately it's let down by the number of closed shops. It's great if you want to pawn in your childs xbox, go and place a few bets at the bookies then spend your winnings at the pound shop but other than that there's nothing anymore. It's a real shame. Looks like the remainder of the shops are being killed off by the pedestrianisation as well, all I can put it down to is the councils trying for a city based on nightlife etc... as opposed to shopping etc... might be completely wrong but we'll see....

    Parts of Wolverhampton have been ruined with the reset and pedestrianisation a lot of small businesses have closed down. There are plusses the accessibility is good to travel and the banks and some stores are good. However, where the market used to be and that end of town is a ghost town sad to see. Its got good multiculturalism generally a nice place to live with clean suburbs and canals and nearby countryside
