After taking some time with the gunpla hobby i can only imagine it's that it's the Games Workshop brand.
There's a whole game attached to it and there are locations where you can play that game for free and all that stuff, which is GW using that value to justify a higher price point.
When compared to a a Real Grade or low end Master Grade gunpla, an Imperial Knight should cost about 20-40 dollars depending on the type you get, if you're judging it exclusively by the hobbying itself and not the added brand value.
I'm not supporting or justifying anything on GW's end here.

      @Jc88500 Před 2 lety

You missed RG, combining the 1/144 scale and affordability of HG with the Inner frame and gimmicks of MG, and the high parts count and exterior detail of PG. Real Grades aim to replicate the appearance of a suit as if it was built in real life (in fact all of the life size Gundam statues in japan and the freedom Gundam in Shanghai are based on the RG designs. The exception to this is the RX-78 F00 in Yokohama which is an original redesign of the RX-78).
RG is also known for the ‘Advanced MS joint’ where some single parts are able to articulate, this was cool but it lead to stability issues in early RGs since they relied on the advanced ms joint for most of their inner frame and they had a tendency to get loose over time. Recent RGs however, have been absolute masterpieces. Since Bandai phased out the Advanced MS Joint frame, they’ve become more like mini MGs but sometimes they even surpass MG. The RG Nu, Sazabi, Crossbone, Unicorn and Wing TV are some of the best kits I’ve built.

Love me some gunpla. Pro tip if you want a battle torn gunpla - a soldering iron will be your best friend. Beam rifle holes, shell blasts on shield or armour plating, deep cuts from a laser blade or the more archaic weapons of IBO (would need to use nippers or a stanley as well for best effect). Theyre all gonna look great once you get the technique downpat. And while youre mastering it just sacrifice a few SD models

I was at an Japanese import/hobby shop one day, my friend was building Gundam, I was painting warhammer, and I ran out of warhammer to paint... so I started posing my friend's models.
The shop owner liked chatting with customers, and he came over and saw the models I was posing and was enthralled. He asked how I had managed to get the Gundams to stay in some insane freestyle poses without any stands, and asked my friend if he could photograph them and use them as promotional material for the shop.
Was a neat little experience. Never got into the hobby though, too poor between college and WARHAMMER!

I don't know much about Gundam, but I LOVE building the Evangelion model kits. You should totally give those a shot too, and maybe even custom paint one of your own. (You know, considering you sang lyrics from the OP and did an entire Gendo and Shinji skit)
Actually, let's go to the next level. Get an Eva model kit and make a diorama with it. Shinji and Eva-01 destroying NERV HQ, a battle with an Angel, 01 and 02 fighting the twin angel together, 00 with an N2 mine, there are so many possibilities.
Do it Tabletop Time. Get in the robot.

And oddly enough some HGs are better detailed than non-grade 1/100s, like the Dagger L.
But yeah, perhaps one of each major grade would have been good, especially since he immediately began contemplating the GW pricing by comparison; Bandai's grades are very different experiences for their price points. HG with its low cost and simple assembly, MG with his high detail and larger scale; PG with its sheer volume of parts and detailing, all with the appropriate pricing. And then we have RG with the balance of the prior 3, HG's scale, MG detail and price point, with PG's quantity of parts.

I've been curious about Gunpla - I used to be a military scale modeller but just over a year ago I had a stroke and although I am on the mend I have lost the ability to do the minute and precise fine painting and weathering and modding skills that I used to have. 😒 However, I like the fact that Gunpla, while scratching my need for detail, is pre-colours and doesn't need glue... In short it removes some of the issues I now have with traditional kits. So, I'm going to give one of these a go, and see if it right for me. Thanks for a great video.

I'm kinda surprised you started with a MG kit. I was expecting you guys to start with a HG kit especially when I heard you were going to work on a Barbados, because that has a great HG kit and is cheap as chips. I would also suggest starting fully painted builds with an HG kit as they have significantly less parts and are thus a lot easier to paint. Or course if you don't care about how many tiny little parts you have to separately paint then I would suggest either a RG(1:144) or PG(1:100) kit depending on the scale you want.

For the next one, have fun with green stuff and plastic plates.
Also it'd be interesting to see gw. Changing their price tag, cause Gundam kits are actually better molded with more precise and sharp shapes , coming with a variety of color and material (going from Mat pearlescent, clear, glossy, metallic injecter etc... Some with a rigid texture and other with a more rubbery like texture that leaves quasi no marking when cutting nubs a'd sanding), the engineering breaks the roof of everything that is done elsewhere (on a majority of kits some fewer exemple can go even beyond that statement and some other are just basically bricks due to the ms design or bandai's laziness) with new tech continously coming out. Also they're doing freaking ecopla: the same plastic model you can buy but with recycled plastic.
And finally the simple amount of plastic available
The price of GW minis is not justified anymore.

To be fair to the 40k vs Gundam pricing is that gunpla has been around since the 80's and have plenty of time and r&d to keep costs affordable while having great features and articulation.
Also Barbatos is a very well thought out kit. Its articulation is one of the best in any kit.

Painting it is cool, sure. Giving it some weathering, is pretty cool too. (actually some modelers use weathering and adding "battle damage" as an excuse to clean up some mistakes made during the build, but they wont admit it. including me)
but imo, the real thick of it in gunpla, is making your gunpla unique, by adding even more details that werent there by pla-plating, scribing, even more layers of paint, and FINALLY,
    kit bashing.
i think kit bashing is the one true secret ingredient to making your gunpla really, REALLY unique. the best modeler/s imo that does this so good (from what ive seen so far) EA Gunpla, Studio G, RAY STUDIO, and my fave starter youtuber Neorainsky.
its one thing to build a gundam from the franchise, but its also another thing to make something you could truly, call your own. or maybe even build something that could fit the franchise youre really a fan of, like a fanmade Gundam Frame. theres like 72 gundam frames in the lore of IBO that existed in the Calamity War. leaves a lot up to your imagination, no?
