Raker Lakes York - Fishing in Sub Zero Temperatures

  • With the overnight temperatures down to -6oC , the rivers still unfishable, and local restrictions still in force, it's getting harder to find fishable venues, luckily for me I found an un-frozen peg on Horseshoe Lake at Raker Lakes York. Armed with flouro pinkies, dead reads, bread, corn, micro pellets, expanders and wafters I go in search of some of the resident skimmer bream fishing in sub zero temperatures.
    I again try the bomb and bread and bomb and corn. Knowing the venue can produce good bags of skimmers in winter I start with micro pellets and expanders on the short line but end up on the whip and pinkie.
    Watch the video as I work through the baits and methods and adjust my feed to try and tempt a few bites and some winter skimmers . If you like the video and want to see more content like this, please subscribe to the HOOKED Fishing Channel here:

      Thanks Phil. If I fished that lake again I'd go down the middle on the pole with a sprinkle pot with live pinkies and a bit of swim stim green, reckon that'd sort a few skimmers out in these cold temps.

    Hiya John that looked like hard work mate enjoyed watching though thanks ,pinkies are a brilliant winter bait ,caught my best roach just under 2pound on double pinkie caster .it looks like those gloves are giving way have they been worth money ,mine are ok,thanks again for enduring the cold ,atb

      Thanks Roy, yes it was a hard but an enjoyable day none the less. Cracking roach that mate, used to catch a lot of 2lbers on the Ouse 20 years ago but they're not there any more and most of winter can't get near it to even try these days due to flooding. The gloves are goig home on the seams - I've stitched em up and restitched em but I'm not that good with a needle and thread, probably time for a new pair, they've done me proud though, had them 2 winters and give em some punishment.

    Thank you John for taking the time and effort to provide us with this exceptional video. The angling on its own was worth a watch but your disgorger skills are something else. I have seen other anglers with what seems to be excellent disgorger skills but I have never seen close ups.

      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety

      Very welcome, thanks Colin, never really thought about the disgorger other than I try to remove the hook with a minimum of damage to the fish.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Paul, I think a bit of fishmeal on a pole line down the middle with a sprinkle pot over the top would have produced a few more skimmers and keep the short line loose fed for roach. Tight lines pal.

    Another great video John, the mittens you are using do you cut the fingers off yourself or buy them like that, I have a pair of neoprene ones with velcro on two of the fingers I'm thinking of chopping the rest down because two fingers ain't good enough. Tight lines and keep safe.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi John, no I bought them like this, I often get asked about the gloves and i can tell you they're the best I've ever come across for fishing as the fit so tight. They are actually fly fishing gloves, I got them from John Norris website and they are Guideline Fir-Skin CGX with far infra red fibres. Mine have taken a lot of abuse, the right hand one thumb stitching has come apart but I keep sewing it back up badly. Unfortunately they aren't waterproof but even when fishing the pole in the wet, it's preferable to having bare hands with wind chill on, (I suffer with Raynauds) but these keep my fingers mobile enough.

    Nice one John, looks a bit cold out there! Is there a reason you were using elastic top on the whip over flick tip? Was it just the chance of a better fish?

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes it was Ewan, I honestly though I'd catch more skimmers than roach. In hindsight, should have fished a long pole down the middle I think, will have to try that next time.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      They're all good Tony, you catch a lot of bream on horsehoe short and carp on floating bread across on the very long pole - 18m. Highbank has a good variety of fish and lots of carp and crucians and Acorn is probably my favourite for the carp on hard banded halibut pellet but again surface baits work as well.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Nigel 👍 I'm not sure any smaller bomb would have made any difference, the 10g ICM match cube is as about as small as it gets really, it's only just over a 1/3rd of an ounce, probably just the stems that make them look larger on camera.

      @@HOOKEDFishingChanneljust looked a bit much for freezing conditions 😊....I'm a bit old school 80s lol....a former match angler........I used to ( nd pls give it a go ).....get a old arsley bomb.....put a reses around it...,cut a bit of foam.....shape it...,put a band on to hold in position...then soak it in corn steep or chopped worm juices or both 👍.....old ways yes......but boy do it work mate👍.....good luck 🤞

      Hmm, interesting stuff. I have some CSL in the bait store, will get my hacksaw out and start modding, or maybe i'll modify the method a little - a small pellet feeder with foam in will do nicely and I have just the place to try it if it isn't frozen. Thanks for the tip 👍

    Hey up John. Is raker the one on the country lanes and when you turn in all the carparks are separated with sheep-type fencing?

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  Před 3 lety

      Hi Gaz, it’s on a country Lane between Ellington and sheldrake. There’s really only the one car park that’s split to the left of the gate by a box hedge. There’s otter fencing and a closed gate in front of you as you enter which goes down to the specimen lake only all the other lakes are to the left.
