  • Today we go through the 5 model years of Honda's ATC200X. These were made from 1983 to 1987 and consisted of 2 generations; 1983 - 1985 & 1986 - 1987. Admittedly, this particular model isn't the one I know the most about, so there are some things you may be able to clear up, so feel free to post in the comments!
    The folks at www.atvondemand.com have put together a fantastic compilation of information on these models and it can be found here www.atvondemand.com/1983-1987... I definitely pulled some information out of there for this video.

    I always love seeing you pull out different machines and educating us on the differences. Im at an age where these are what was in showrooms when I was a kid. I've never seen an 86-87 200x in person. Just saved an 85 200x and 83 250r and am doing a slight resto to have nice riders. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and collection with us.

    I really love your collection Sir. I was a member of the Honda Hoarders group when I was on FB but I have since quit FB. I have a modest collection and want to add just one more Honda ATC, an '86 200X. Love the story about how you got yours. I live in CNY. Not sure where you live but it would be cool to see you collection sometime.

      I was going to buy an old 1985 200x like I had back in 85 but ended up recently buying a dirt bike for my midlife crisis machine. Never owned a bike before and love it! New subscriber here Preston really been enjoying binge watching your great videos! Thanks for your wholehearted effort to keep the amazing Honda ATC alive & all the handy info you're passing on too!
    I started out in '84 on a brand new 125M at about 15 (same as my brother in fact still have his), then quickly progressed to the one & only '85 200X - bought brand new in the box & watched them put it together! I was just 16, & still have it to this day! Just $1748 - those were the days! 🤣
    I could ask 100 questions & talk about a zillion things ATC related(can't we all?!), but for now will only throw one at you while I work to get it back trail ready.
    Believe it or not after not firing it in a decade at least(I know shoot me but granted I was careful to drain the carb to store it), I sh*t you not it fired THE SECOND KICK!!! Proof Honda's are built to RUN!
    Now to the problem. Though it sounded happy to come back to life, right away I noticed it refusing to idle. AT ALL. Like anything below 3000 it was spitting & trying to die. After a couple minutes I found pressing the carb air box snorkel towards the motor it happily idled smooth as always. That dang composite intake manifold has finally bitten the bullet!
    My question is who have you found to be the best source for proper replacements? I read sure enough the 200X version has a different slant to miss the frame tube, plus obviously want the 24mm dia intact(supposedly, I've not pulled the original yet to confirm it same as carb throat).
    These are clearly all over EBay, but most sellers claim one size fits all which clearly can't be true & < than 24mm dia. so who to trust quality & fit wise? Obviously also wise to replace the O-ring & gasket on motor side?
    That's all for now, thanks again for all the great videos & any pointers from you & the great community here!

    • @ThisOldTrike
      @ThisOldTrike  Před rokem +2

      Hey man, thank you for watching my videos! I really appreciate that. I love that you still have your 85 200X!! That is awesome! So you need the boot from the airbox to the carb, or the carb to the engine? I think you're talking about the boot from carb to engine... I'm seeing a few on ebay. The part number is 16210-965-000 and I'm seeing a range of prices. Is that what you're looking for?

    • @katmanluke7187
      @katmanluke7187 Před rokem +2

      @@ThisOldTrike welcome Preston! Thanks for the quick reply. Yep intake manifold mounts to motor that's the one!
      So that's the correct part #? (imagine it's in my Honda service manual too). The issue is many sellers claim it fits all ATC200's which can't be possible? Plus ones give diameter seem to say less than correct 24mm - or is that diameter typically smaller than 24mm? Like I say haven't taken mine off yet to verify & figure you'd know?
      Yep my 200X is my baby since I was 16. I'm 54 now. Even at that age was fanatical on service had first oil change at just 6 hrs wrote it in manual! 🤣 Guesstimate is only about 300-350 hrs now. But man what great memories packed in there! Except for tiny spot on seam at tank thanks to a bastard mouse the seat is flawless. But it's stiffened over time worries me I've gathered mineral oil is best to soften?
      I'd have NEVER stopped riding had my brother & most our friends not "outgrown"(!?) it. One of my best friends since 8 yrs old jumped in the fray got a pristine used 86 125M(from what you've said wish I'd bought it when he had to sell out!). We had some great x's riding in fact he was only person I'd let ride mine. Then cancer struck never saw his 40th & died late '06. 😞
      I think my motor is happy just needs that manifold! Brakes will need TLC the front master needs rebuilt lever moves free now. I removed entire rear brake system yrs ago it was dragging, & bought used spare off Ebay to swap parts but never happened. So I need to find best place for rebuild kits?
      I think only other thing to address to get her back on trail is swap out front shocks w/nice used 85's I got off EBay. The originals got about a 2 degree bend hitting a 400 lb yearling COW escaped into the road at dusk. 😲 YEP! It was just a test run, on the return leg after just doing a bunch of service to start riding again! Miraculously I'd just slowed from wide open to about 35 - 40, & only other damage to bike is cracked her pretty fender w/TEAM HONDA sticker up by triple clamp. Determined to get one of those welders & fix right after what you've said on OEM vs re-pops!
      Other miracle is didn't break a single bone, but I was beat up bad couldn't walk normal about 6 mths. So the even wilder part? I'm living proof that thanks to being on an ATC & NOT a 2 wheeler I wasn't REALLY broken up or worse stuck in a wheelchair for life! Because most every bike rider I talked to admitted the instinct would've been lay the bike down which would've thrown me straight into that cow at 40 mph so you can picture the rest! 🙏 So "3-wheelers are dangerous" my ass, still irks me to this day what they pulled off.
      Anyways, for now my goal is get her back rolling then deal w/the cosmetic corrosion issues down the way which is 💔. Thanks Florida humidity! Speaking of rolling still has the OEM tires! Front actually still holds air, but rears do not. Dry rot is appearing so I've got to figure out best option. It seems hard finding new ones that even remotely resemble OEM? Thought maybe just tube them, but sure enough you'll want to start playing rough & they may come apart!
      Anyways, super jealous your incredible collection that's a dream garage right there! Always liked the 250SX & 350X when they came out, in fact nearly traded for the 350 but in a way very glad I kept my agile 200X. Now I just wish I'd added the other 2 way back when now the crazy $$$ values & scarcity of truly clean ones!
      Hope you see this was worried you'd never see the first & I'd need to dig for another way to reach you. Thanks huge for any pointers & you know I'll be back for more ATC! 😂
      PS You have any of the magazines I still have DOZENS like 3 yrs of Dirt Wheels & others thrown in from 84 - 87!

      @ThisOldTrike  Před rokem +2

      Yes, that is the correct part number. Go check out my video on where to find parts (250R on a frozen lake is the thumbnail). I show you how to search the schematics for the machines to figure out the part numbers and see what's still available. Even if it's not available, you can use the part number to search ebay. That should help you out a lot.

      @@ThisOldTrike hey Preston! Sorry delay replying been sporadic here I got buried working Daytona for Speedweeks & now Bikeweek but actually got a brief break!
      Yep I'm already sub'd & actually did watch the hunting parts video before to prepare. Maybe I'll watch it again Just thought you might've had to get that intake & brake kits for your 200X's & knew the better sources? So much Chinese crap out there! I'll also need to replace front wheel bearings too, & there must be a dozen brands! I noticed that right before I did that test run into the COW back in 1492. Thankfully for now all the other bearings seem tight.
      I read somewhere there's definitely a preferred brand on brake rebuild kits. And obviously it'd be smart to do new gaskets on the intake too. Any specific vendors you generally do better for Honda gaskets?
      I'll take a look at those sites you mention, so far wasn't impressed w/Rocky Mtn for 200X parts - only had like 3? Maybe I used the menu wrong.
      Like I said want to get her back riding first, but powder coating the frame/swingarm will be somewhere in future. How expensive is that roughly? I mean is a frame $300 or $1200?
      And congrats on the courage to tear that 250R motor apart! Braver than me am surprised you didn't have a service manual handy! Time to play catch up on the videos think that was last I saw! 😳
      Thanks for any more pointers & hope you've been able to play in the snow w/one of your ATCs! So much for cooler weather here - today been running the A/C! Crazy!

    Love the video very much! And man that 87 tank is too cool, also I get what you mean with the seat having no text but I believe that was done since the tank says Honda 200X and the fenders says ATC and so they didn't want to clutter the machine with text. But it would be awesome to see how that looks with the ATC or 200X seat!

    I learned on a 1983 Honda 110 at 7 years old I loved that thin. Dude remember quad zilla that thing was a 500 cc if I’m not mistaken. My buddy had the 70cc . The Kawasaki 160 was great . The 125 had the front brakes so you could dig in . I loved riding those in the snow attaching the sleds to the back. The good ole days. Nice collection by the way you must be rich . How did you get so many in such good shape. Me and my brother and sisters pretty much destroyed that 110 . I had it opened up with my friend nick on the back in the field and one back tire hit a BMX jump and we got thrown . I remember looking up viser smashed down and watching it do it’s last few tumbles . Wheelie bar that’s what we called them anyway on Long Island that was bent into the seat the bars were bent down. We called those the waffle tires the 83 Honda tires yea in 85 they changed the tread pattern. Oh the grab bar I actually never knew it was called that. The 85 also on the 110,s and 125,s changed up shift also hated that. Forward gears I’m talking like first to second you would put your toe under the shifter and lift up. Instead of pushing down. Stupid idea because it wasn’t smooth like a motor cycle shift there was no clutch. Anyway cool channel brings back memories great memories.

Like Bearing, seals, clutches, calipers, etc. I am obsessing about a few on Facebook marketplace, but, I don't want to jump in if I won't be able to restore it. I am a factory fan and avoid aftermarket stuff as much as possible.

Regarding parts availability on 200X's... yes and no. Bearings and seals, mostly. Clutches, I think so, if not OEM certainly aftermarket. Calipers, depends on the year, but there are some aftermarket options available... or used OEM. I have a couple videos also on how to search for what is still available through Honda for OEM parts.

    I have recently picked up another 1985 200x i believe it used to belong to a friend of ours as kids because i purchased it in same town and its the only one ive ever seen with a clear plastic see through tank. I cant find anything online with anyone else ever having a clear see through plastic tank on a 200x. How rare do you think the tank is? The family i believe who originally owned it were huge racers until his passing at age 16.

    On the 83, I noticed the 200x side stickers are slanted towards the front, and the 84 the numbers slant to the rear. Could the 83 stickers be swapped left for right? It looks like their axial placement needs adjusted, so they don’t appear original. Just a thought.

    I find 200x's to be great machines, yes they lack the power of the 350, but make up for it with their maneuverability and I think teens to grown man can enjoy 200x's and have alof of fun on them. I've been waiting for this video as I am a 200x fan. The motors are small but they sure do rev out way more than the 185/200 motor and you can tell they've been setup to wind out much higher than their origin motors. That's a very open question. I buy these from craigslist... from marketplace... from word of mouth deals... all of the above... Just need to be watching and ready when they present themselves. Prices range wildly based on year/condition. 1st gens are cheaper typically than 2nd gens. I traded a snowmobile trailer for one of these... and I've paid $5500 for one of these... • @ThisOldTrike
      @ThisOldTrike  Před 2 lety

      What's up man. So, first question... is the whole engine shot, or is it just the top end that is too far gone? Sourcing a top end for that probably isn't going to be difficult. But finding an entirely different 200S motor probably isn't too hard either. 85 is the only model with upshift though.
      I know people put the 200S motor in the 1st gen 200X frame and make them "Auto X's". I also know the newer CRF230 motors fit in to the 200X frame and that is a possible swap... so it stands to reason that you could go the other way too and put a CRF230 motor in a 200S frame... but maybe not. That would probably be a lot of motor in a hard tail set up.

The crank rope is off of another brand of 3 wheeler, the cam gear only has 1 of the 2 bolts that hold the gear to the cam.... It's probably rebuildable if a guy wanted to. So, if you check the associated part numbers for the rear tires on the first gen 200X and 250SX, there are 5 different part numbers listed for the 200X and 3 different numbers for the 250SX. All of the number for the 250SX are listed under the first gen 200X. From the description you gave of the 200X tire, it makes me wonder if you were describing the XA-801, the puncture resistant optional tire? Those were available on both the SX and 200X... and 200SX shared all the same tires as well (rears of course).
