    Having grown up in Cottage Grove late 60's to early 90's. I have watched SP run 100 car trains north loaded and south empty. Usually 3 trains north and 3 or 4 trains south per day. It was all wood products. Back in the day it was SD 9's, then SD 40-2's, SD 40-T2's and SD 45-T.
    My Late father used to tell me about the steam engines coming north and south on the line.
    Wow, it takes me back to my childhood. Good drone video Dan.

    The four SD70s seem to have more power than is needed to move this train with its consist of mostly empty center beam flatcars. You did indicate that all that power will be needed to take the loaded train from Roseburg, Oregon back to Cottage Grove, Oregon because of the steeper grades in that direction. I enjoyed watching the Roseburg Turn, Job 501, as it made its way along the Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad on its way between Cottage Grove, Oregon and Roseburg, Oregon. Thank you, Dan, for uploading this video for us to enjoy!

      You are correct. For this Southbound run they don't need all this power but for the Northbound trip later in the day sometimes these 4 units are barely enough. I guess I'll have to get out there again and get a video of that at some point huh? Thanks a lot Thomas!

    At first I thought the four heavy duty locomotives were overkill. But after watching the video they need every horsepower to move this long train through the hills, especially the loaded one. It's indeed amazing the EMD demo engines from '92 are still earning their keep. The water sprayer is cute and important too. I'm sure the railroad doesn't want to start a fire in the middle of a hot summer. Oregon is a very nice state, especially this time of the year, when everything is green and healthy. The little villages along the track are quiet and peaceful. Fantastic video again Dan, I really enjoyed the flight.

      Amtrak once ran the Cascades from Eugene to Glendale to try and inspire demand for service to that part of Oregon, though nothing ever came from that, I'm guessing there just isn't enough demand for Amtrak service down there. The other problem is the Siskiyou line has so many turns and the track condition isn't very good to the point that passenger service isn't very practical! The tunnels in certain parts like cow Creek canyon also don't have a lot of clearance, that's why the one time you did see Union Pacific use this line as a detour a couple of years ago, you didn't see anything intermodal!

    • @gretchenchadwick8343
      @gretchenchadwick8343 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@jacksonwhittier3646 We understand but my son was thinking of railcars like Doodlebugs, Budd RDC'S, and speeders for use on the Siskiyou line not passenger trains with coaches pulled by a separate locomotive and thinks they could pull intermodal trains on this line all they have to do is hire RJ Corman to improve the tunnel clearance and replace the old rails with new ones. But more importantly, with God ✝️🤴✡all things are possible and you can take that to the bank 🏦.

    • @jacksonwhittier3646
      @jacksonwhittier3646 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@gretchenchadwick8343 Another great idea would be a summertime excursion train like what the Albany and Eastern does, where it's one loco and 4 or 5 coaches, some of which are open top, it's not meant for commercial use, only leisure. I think CORP is also currently working on replacing old rails because in this video some sections that were 10mph restricted are now what looks to be 25mph, I'm not sure about the tunnels though, I heard the reason they won't run these EMD's south of Roseburg is because the turns get really tight and they would scrape the walls of the tunnels.

    Just fantastic. Incredible. I wish there were trains at that speed to record here. They usually run at 55 - 60 mph.
    A month ago a flight in 45 mph went wrong and a crash into the trees of the nearby mountains was a fact. The 4 000 USD Mavic 3 pro had to be found by climbing an almost vertical mountain up to a level of 120 feet. Being 70 years old and not physical.... It was a miracle to manage and get back home in one piece with both the drone and the controller.

    So here's a few fun facts about the Siskiyou line: the line was one of the very last lines to use the old US&S B-style lower quadrant semaphores, and even very common to see not only the old foundations of the signals, but also the silver junction boxes on the adjacent telephone poles where the signals once stood.
    Another thing, if you look carefully, you'll see a year build-date on each of the through trestles. Most trestles built in this style on the line show a year of 1906. I remember seeing them as a child and thinking about how many trains they've supported over the years. Sure, the number of trains have diminished substantially since Southern Pacific sold the line in 1994, but to know that they're still holding well is Testament to the quality of those builds.
    And finally, if one was to walk along the siding and read the build locations and dates of the rails on those sidings, they would likely see build locations like Lackawanna, Steelton, Illinois, and even Colorado. Most of the older dates range from 1946 all the way as far back as 1909!
    I have other tidbits, but don't wanna create a book within the message board here so I'll stop now 🤣
    Great video, as always, Dan! Keep it up!!

    • @jacksonwhittier3646
      @jacksonwhittier3646 Před 10 měsíci

      @@TheRailfanDanThe whole line used to be 25mph a couple years ago but the problem is that the tracks have deteriorated to such a point that you can't go ever 10mph without either wrecking the tracks or the train. I'm guessing the 25mph parts have continuously welded rail on them because Portland and Western has started doing that and that's why some of their trains are faster now. You could probably get speeds up to 35 or 40mph if they redid the ballast and ties as well as tilted the turns but I don't believe this line generated enough revenue to warrant that!
