Everybody collects something. We collect knives. That we have in common. But some of us have great passion and well as particular taste. I'm glad Alan shared this amazing collection with us.

I believe I owned that brass handled Bowie, or one just like it, in the late 60s or very early 70s. Sold it to a fellow in the south.
I liver in Ct. at the time. Bob Ables and Norm were my teachers.

Hello - I've just posted a very brief video showing an unmarked knife which I know to be over 60 years old.
I'd be grateful for any information regarding its probable age.

Why are they called "Bowie" knives?

Like many shorthand terms the meanings gets obscured and Bowie knife is no exception. Now there is a specific definition of the term Bowie knife which is a large broad blade clip point fighting knife which resembles the one commissioned by James Bowie and supposedly the knife he used in a dual and also carried to the battle of the Alamo where he died as a hero. Or so the story goes. That is the classic definition. However there are knives that were made in the same era with a similar style and they are sometimes called Bowie knives which renders the term somewhat generic. Modern knives with a similar profile are fit to be called Bowie knives as well. But no doubt some people will call any big fearsome looking knife a Bowie knife. James Bowie is a famous historical figure with an extensive past which is quite adventuresome. A central portion of his history is related to this knife and therefore it has become famous as well.
