- Note: this video is well over 10 years old on a layout that no longer exists. There will be a new version of this video here sometime in 2024. Thanks for watching! -Shaun
We finally have an operating set of crossing gates on the DT&I! Thanks to a tip from my friend Christopher Muller, I used thread to link up the gates to the tortoise switch machines instead of the supplied piano wire. Since the gates from NJ International are counterweighted to go down on their own, the thread works perfectly to pull them back up. I wired up a Tortoise for each gate, and they had to be directly in line with the access hole in order to get enough swing. The rest was left up to the Grade Crossing Pro-IR from LogicRail Technologies. You can read more on their website - LogicRailTech.com.
Enjoy 2 SD45T-2s pulling a manifest through the newly operating gates!
Very nice work. I like how the bell started spazzing out toward the end. Very cool!
I noticed that, too!
i really like how much detail you put into your layout
That would be the fade in/out of the crossing circuit. Neat feature.
Awesome!!!! Looks and sounds magnificent! Great job!
WOW! Totally great effect. And like others have said, the detail you have in this layout is most impressive. A work of art!
Nice layout!
Absolutely love the sounds! Its like its realistic from the sounds of the crossings and the trains!
Really beautiful work! Congrats.
Like your patched NYC boxcar--quite interesting seeing painted out graffti on a cigar band green car!
Love the doppler effect in it. Very nice.
Very nicely done ✅
Your layout is extremely awesome Shaun. Keep up the excellent work!
THAT was superb! Your layout must be awesome! Subscribing...
Nice job! I like the traffic light too. Very well done!
Be nice if the traffic light would flash red when the crossing signal activates.
Pretty realistic layout.
Cool train
I have one suggestion. Now this may be hard to time, but notice at 2:06, the gates lift up but the street light turns red? To add another prototypical aspect, make that light turn green when the gates turn off so that the traffic flow can clear out through the intersection. I know that this is your layout, so it is just another suggestion.

nice video. the gates look awesome
Good work.
Nice job... I'm looking to add semaphores to my O scale loop on both end of the passing tracks.
Nice Job!!!
The town is a safer place to live thank you the scale citizens of modern DT&I
These sounds are actually dubbed in. Back when I made this video, sound decoders still weren't all that great and I didn't care for them. They've come a long way and I've began upgrading the motive power for the new layout.
Hey Shaun. Bought these crossing gates and the NJI Servo Master 8000 for my Father. The manuals on how to put these together are lacking to say the very least. Your video implies that you have another video on how to install these. Could you share the link with me please? Thank you. Jym
Pretty cool. The gates need to be a little longer with that road width, but looks good.
I think I’ll custom build this time around...LEDs and all.
Awesome work, great sound effects!! Love the locomotives, did you custom decal them yourself?
I pretty much followed the instructions other than replacing the piano wire with thread...
Very neat I like it! PS. What is DT&I?
The DT&I was railroad that hauled mostly auto parts and lasted into the
90's. Thats all I know. Oh, and DTI stands for Detroit, Toledo & Ironton.
NJI wired them that way. I couldn't fix it. That's the only thing I don't like about those particular gates. I've seen other videos and they're the same way, so I know it's not just mine. They don't have separate wires like the Walthers ones do.
Very Nice........ Please Give me detail for how make this ? & Give me detail for how make electric train toys & tracks..... I am Waiting for your help
Was that a “Pan Am” boxcar!!!??? What happened to my airline????
Play it at 0.25 speed and you will notice that at some points, both of the lights are on at the same time
Try to slow down the speed of the gates and lights
How did you do this? Where are all the sounds coming from? Do the engines have sound effect options? Do you control the train horn and Bell on train or just pre recordings?
cars are too clean.........great sounds and lights my man
Im really trying to find a how to for installing these. Looks like you were able to set the crossing up perfectly. Any idea where I can find how to do this?
Great Video! How did you get the traffic light to turn geen just as the railroad crossing gates started flashing?
Yeah, that's just my luck: The only time the light will turn green for me is when a train is passing by, so I can't cross the street anyway! Haha!
Google Leonards Miniature Traffic lights - You Tube wont let me post the link. I have been super happy with my signal - custom built to size and operation (1980 - so no delay) and the railroad override works perfectly. Good to work work with, but it took a couple of months to get (he probably has a real job in addition ;-) !) Sorry for the response delay, on vacation and I don't really know how to navigate You Tube that well. i looked at your videos - I like the concept. Great modeling job too!
These traffic lights change colors they stay green for 80 seconds then yellow for 5 seconds then they turn red
who did u steal the sound from?
:) 100%
Love he video, but can't the gates b a little longer.
+Chess Eric That was a stock model. Pretty standard for western states, which seems to be what most are modeled after. I don't know of any good models out right now with better gates. That's a market that needs attention.
O ok great!
I'm not sure what you mean?
Lights don't turn off until the gates are all the way silly .
CN locos
that's bein a little to picky, I think they look great, the sequence of the flash would be the last thing in the world i cared about
Bell goes in and out
You use sounds effect

Not to be obvious, but duh...that's the point. Read the "history" of how this came to be! ;)
