    Relationships are more than just love. It’s about compatibility. Spike may love her (even though it’s really more obsession), but his life isn’t compatible with her. Being with Spike doesn’t actually help Buffy with her own self-loathing and depression. She can’t function in her day to day life and feels like she is living in hell. Spike doubles down on those feelings to bring Buffy down to his level as opposed to uplifting her to make her feel more complete.
    This is why it’s a toxic relationship. It’s not built on a healthy foundation, thus nothing solid can ever last. It’s a wild night of passionate lust, but once that’s over nothing is left but shame. You can’t be in love with someone you’re ashamed to be with. That’s not healthy.

    Fantastic reactions . Your enthusiasm and laughter is so infectious . This episode has so much going on and you guys nailed it. Remember that duality has been a theme of the show from the beginning. Buffy is now , due to events beyond her control, assuming the roles that Joyce and Faith occupied. Like Joyce, Buffy is a working single Mother. Joyce did not enjoy her job but had to provide suddenly on her own for her daughter. Joyce was ill equipped , like Buffy is now and we are seeing an emotionally upset teenager, Dawn, like Buffy. Remember we learned that Buffy was shoplifting ( Becoming Part 1) while her parents were fighting leading up to the divorce.
    Buffy no longer has her full emotional support group. Giles and Joyce are out of her life. Angel and Cordelia are in LA and Oz is traveling somewhere. Willow is fighting her dark demon and Xander is focused on his life. Like Faith, Buffy is seeking emotional contact and remember Faith used sex for comfort and any connection with someone. Faith had the earmarks of a depressed girl and we did not see much joy from Joyce.( Goodness she was engaged to a homicidal cyborg).
    Yes , a depressed Buffy is using Spike but he is using Buffy to satisfy is obsessive desires. Spike mixes lust, violence, obsession, and immature love that only Buffy can handle. It’s easy to see this has only a satire of the service food industry but it is also the place dreams and talent goes to die. A strong, independent, and talented woman ( Buffy) can only wither in a non descript world of conformity that stifles personal growth. Double Meat Palace could easily be a corporate bank, insurance company, or government agency. Success is defined by compliance and longevity. Buffy is at a crossroads in her ultimate journey for the show, becoming a woman on her own terms. She had to sort out the maternal part and her sexual being that she will be as a woman. This choice is what derails so many women. Emotional connection, responsibility, sexual satisfaction, and being an individual free from outside influences of control will be her final steps. Sadly they are the most difficult.

    Watchers are paid to oversee the active Slayer. Slayers are “unpaid tools of the council.”
    This is moronic. And moreover, _impractical._
    The active Slayer should be sponsored by the council. Their accommodation should be arranged by the council, and they should have a salary awarded to them for fighting the war on evil, especially considering the watchers are paid to just sit around and advise when necessary.
    If the Slayer had her accommodation provided and salary awarded, that means she can focus exclusively on waging the war on evil. Stressing about money for food, housing, bills and having to work to earn this would leave no time for the Slayer to sleep, her days always working the day and slaying the night.
    It also means Slayers from impoverished backgrounds like Faith would likely never have fallen to the dark side, had they actually been supported with the most basic human necessities.

    Idk if anyone has pointed it out yet, but Helfrek is played by the same lady as Cecily from Spike's flashback, idk if it's ever confirmed but some say she was a vengeance demon even back then

      @ernesthakey3396 Před 22 dny +5

      Spoilers for an upcoming episode...
      It has been suggested based on the timeline (and I think maybe confirmed) that she was already a vengeance demon at the time, and she rejected William because she was there to exact some vengeance (she must have been working on it for a while) on a whole group of entitled "gentlemen", and she knew William wasn't one of the ones deserving of her wrath.
      What is shown in the series only a couple episodes from now is that she recognizes Spike but calls him William, ie his name as a human before he was turned, so it does seem likely that she was indeed the same character, whether or not she was a vengeance demon at the time.

      @@ernesthakey3396The issue I have with that theory is that when Spike tells his mother he has his eye in someone doesn't she refer to her as that (whatever the family name was ) girl suggesting she has always been around (unless vengeance demons can supplant false memories) or its one heck of a long vengeance gig. Probably thought too much about that lol. I know there is a comic regarding this so not sure how it's addressed

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 Před 21 dnem

      @@Green528 actually that's not a counterargument, at least according to the Buffy wiki, because apparently his mother heard the name Cecily and made an incorrect assumption:
      "Cecily Underwood was the eldest daughter of her family circa 1880. Anne Pratt guessed she would be the subject of her son's poems, and described her as "lovely". William denied it, though,[1] as he was enamored instead with Cecily Addams.[2]"
      So the Cecily who was the vengeance demon was Miss Addams...probably she had inserted herself into the social scene, and just made up the name. Or did she? The spelling of that name could just be the writers giving a nod to the Addams family, but... 😉

    Gotta disagree with Suraj on Halfrek being a pot-stirrer. In Once, Anya and Xander's little duet reveals a lot of their fears and insecurities. The pot was already stirred. Halfrek was just pointing out what she could clearly see after just a few minutes of interaction and conversation with Anya.
    On another note, the Scoobies bug me in this episode with their yet again, dismissive attitude toward Buffy's concerns about something go on at Doublemeat. You would think that after years of fighting evil together, the gang would learn to trust her instincts but they fail again at this. Yes, Willow comes to help at the end, but one could argue she did that to avoid the issue she was having with magic or seeking out comfort from the gang for herself as she struggled. Buffy has her flaws yes, but this is yet another common theme with the Scoobies, along with their inability to actually have adult conversations, that really irritates me the more times I watch this amazing show.

      To be fair, the only thing truly wrong with the workers, was that they had spent far too long working in fast food. Those types of jobs can destroy you as a person. But yes, when Buffy feels that the vibes are off, its almost always for a very good reason.

    Spikes feelings are not real because he doesn’t have a soul.
    He has a intimate PASSIONATE obsession that’s being validated by Buffy.
    Spike cannot and has not ever experienced true love with either Druscilla or Buffy because he’s not capable of it without a soul.

    Big headcanon. The actress that plays Halfrek also played the lady Spike was in love with back when he was still human. You can see her in that episode rejecting Spike. It's been widely speculated that they're in fact the same person and Halfrek drove Spike away that night because she was actually about to grant a wish which was to kill everyone in that party.
