To be fair, its not actually that great. Most of the time you get uptiered to 5.7 where you're just a subpar Tiger 1. Phly got 15 kills as he was extremely lucky and mostly only saw low velocity guns. Normally you fight 76mm, 17pounders and Sabot so your armour isnt that useful

Fuel tanks can act as armour, the Merkava uses them for protection against HEAT since liquids disrupt the metal jet, though in the Merkava they are properly separated and compartmentalized from the crew. KV-1 fuel tank is too effective though, even if it is diesel powered.

But merkava isn’t as good as we could think. It’s a good tank, but low armoured. They put the engine at the front because they didn’t had enough quality stainless steel to produce those tanks.
They put the engine in the front because the IDF values crew protection more, and an engine in front of the crew is extra armor
The_Drunk_Balalaika they did that because their enemies haven’t got apsfs or shells like that, but ap or apc. It is quite efficient against ap, heat, or apc shells, but not other types of shells. They adapted their armour to their opponents’ shells.
The Nut they had. Now arabic countries have. Before, there were t62 and even t34 85 tanks against m103 etc. They started developping new tanks, and their own, cuz UNO and USA weren’t happy about what was doing Israel. Moreover, arabic countries were bying t72.

The standard KV-1 uses a V12 diesel engine (so I'm assuming this one does too). However, diesel is very hard to ignite compared to for example gasoline, so the fact that it doesn't catch fire is far from impossible.

Its actually such an amazing tank in Simulator. Enemy teams playing russian tanks delay longer to identify the tank as it appears russian, thus giving you an advantage.

I own this, I love it, it's saved me countless times and it's an absolute nightmare to any enemy who misses their first shot or bounces it off you. I've seen tigers bounce a shot off my front, dead on and panic realising they awoke a sleeping dragon when my turret turns towards them. If you wanna see a compilation of tanks reversing painstakingly slowly while probably "autistic screeching' inside, then buy this tank. It's not as fast as the T20 (which is another favourite of mine for flanking), but its play style, as beautifully demonstrated here, when used is god-tier at that BR and higher. Also it's a one shot machine with the right ammo (obvious tip, never carry more than 14 shells each of at most 2 ammo types. I've taken as much as 11 penetrative shots in long matches and survived due to empty ammo racks allowing me to repair and skiddadle out of there).

Not OP cause its reverse and stationary rotation is really painfully slow so it's balanced. Play recklessly and you'll die relatively soon and probably get 2 - 3 kills off. Play intelligently and this is a #1 placement tank where you chug down research points and silver lions like it's St. Patrick's Day.

So, regarding the fuel:
1. The KV's are indeed Diesel, as were most Soviet and Russian tanks
2. Diesel does not like to catch fire easily, at least compared to Petrol/Gasoline
3. By the time the Diesel splatters and gets enough exposure to air, the spark caused by the round will go away
4. Fuel [especially diesel] is often used as "additional armor" on tanks even to this day, mainly against HEAT and RPG's
5. It doesn't stop the round, but it does eat all of the spawl, idk why in WT it eats the round itself
Phly, regarding the fuel spaced armor: A spark will not ignite diesel. Diesel ignites best from compression, and will only ignite from very prolonged heat sources. Diesel getting splashed all around the inside of the tank will not ignite unless there's an electrical fire or something similar at the same time.
I'm fairly certain that the Comet and Iron Duke (same thing really) are 5.0
Phly, you should start a series of your favorite lineups for each country much like when you did with the german 6.7 lineup
The fuel works as protection by absorbing the shrapnel from rounds that barely penetrate. Liquids are good at slowing down the shrapnel and dampening blast waves. Fuel itself isn't flammable as a liquid either, so the more full the tank the better protection it makes. Now if the tank is ruptured the crew should be bailing out of course, but thanks to the fuel tank the crew is still alive. That is why fuel tanks are used as spaced armor on modern tanks as well.
Its not diesel what is flammable but its vapour. Since you have to heat diesel to get this vapour first its not that easy do ignite and you will need 3 things to ignite it: Ignition source, oxygen, and this vapours. If you hit tank with projectile you can get high enough temperature to get vapour, but you spark will then be killed by diesel pouring all over the place, you need another ignition source :) Self sealing tanks are not that difficult to get on tank in comparison to plane since you weight isnt thaaaaat important

@Phly The ignition temperature of diesel is 210°C/410°F.
This is in a perfectly mixed environment, with 0 retardation around the fuel. If you spray foam over the top of the fuel, there is basically no chance for a ruptured diesel tank to ignite after the effects of what ruptured it have passed. Your major danger will be the burning hot shell in the tank, and the diesel will cool that off before enough becomes vapourised to burn.
Russian heavy/medium tanks used diesel engines, whereas their light tanks used petroleum engines.
God, Zimmer’s Nimrod from Dunkirk at the beginning is just beautiful.

to answer the question question about if the tank used Gas or diesel, the KV series all had diesel engines however almost every German tank used gasoline so i would imagine they would have converted the engine to gasoline so they could use the same supplies as the rest of the tanks.

Those fuel tanks are part of side protection of KV, they do work as a composite armor in a way. Diesel, unless it is under high pressure, is quite hard to ignite. Thus any spaling effect from armor penetration is blocked also will stop/mitigate HEAT or HESH charges ability to incinerate crew. Also would help against low caliber AP (APHE to be exact). Which is what is was expected to meet on battlefield. it will not stop APCR / HVAP ammo from later stages of war, but as they use spalling effect to kill crew you need to hit crew member or component directly to do damage to tank internals. Some modern tanks use than to protect crew or engines from Shaped charges rather intentionally...
Fuel tanks are actually great at stopping rounds IRL. There was armor test footage of the strv103 and they shot at the side but the fuel tank stopped the round from reaching the crew compartment

Diesel tank penetration generally results in a too fat mixture to ignite inside the tank, and outside, it just burns, can't explode like gasoline.
Also, diesel ruins gunpowder and primers if it gets into the brass casings.
So the crew has a decent chance to bail without looking like mashmellows that slipped off the stick...
Fuel tanks when impacted tend to spark and immediate catch fire, and or explode from the pressurization from rounds hitting them.
So no worries, phly, you are right. Fuel tanks do not stop rounds. It's just a faster way to die.

Phly, Diesiel is ignited from the compression of a cylinder not from a spark plug like gasoline. It is more dense than gas and thus requires more energy to vaporize which then can be ignited as NO liquids are combustable, only the gas on the top surface of an evaporated liquid is conbustable. diesiel can not evaporate as quickly so more energy source is needed to even come close to ignition which is where the pressure of a compressed cylinder cones in. You cannot ignite diesel on its own with out high temp environment Just go for ammo

Fuel tanks are very good at absorbing rounds because of hydrostatic shock. Diesel is about 900kg/m3 very close to water. While large rounds will pass straight through they will experience a large drop in velocity. The effect is far more effective at controlling fragmentation or small caliber rounds. Think a .45 fired into water only travels 3 feet before it has lost all of its energy to the water.

Its actually not that great. Downtiers like the 15kill bit in this vid are super rare for the KV-1B 756(r), so you usually end up at 5.7 where its got average performance
You know how the Italin Vittorio Vento class used fuel oil to absorb the explosion of a torpedo, well it applies to the self sealing, armored with Stalinium fuel tank.
Hey Phly, i have something to say about the round hitting the tank thing.
If these engines are diesel powered, and those fuel tanks have diesel IN them, then it kinda does make sense on why those tanks are basically spaced armor. Diesel engines are two stroke engines and don't have spark plugs like a standard "combustion" engine, diesel has to be compressed quite a bit before it will actually work. I would say how it works exactly but I don't know if diesel just compresses, or it combusts, or what it does, but I do know diesel doesn't burn easily, and like I said it has to be compressed before it does diesel things, so a simple spark, or fire won't make diesel explode or anything.
Keep in mind I have very limited knowledge of the actual fuel engines use, just the engines and how they operate themselves, so that may not be 100% accurate, but that's just my take on it.

Fuel is actually a decent protection, French use it to protect ammo in the AMX-56's hull, front tanks on M1 and T-80 are also protect driver. In our game tanks are full all time and fire isn't such a bad thing so yes, fuel protects ammo on KV-s
Projectiles have a really rough time going through liquids, it actually makes sense it can stop shells if it's full, there's a reason why Abrams has fuel compartments protecting the driver
Thats stupid as hell, liquids move cinetic energy more efficiently than air, meaning even if tje liquid stop the bullet because of magic reasons since there is not enought mass in there, all that energy will stil break the crew in pieces.

as for the fuel part as armor, in versions of the merkava the israeli did store fuel between armorspacing bcs it slows down entering rounds more than if left with just air. so it can work as additional protection by pulling more energy from the entering round.

high velocity projectiles tend to break when they hit fluid because fluid is non compressible, projectile is going to fast for fluid to move out of the way, so it's like stone
Yes it is a diesel engine and diesel doesn't burn very well if at all in normal atmospheric pressure. The diesel will flow out of the tank stalling the engine and drenching the interior making it impossible for the crew to stay inside because of the fumes but it will most likely not catch fire
