- In 1973, as a young Nottingham-based designer, David Lewis, entered a competition to design a new crest for the club.
After winning the competition, David then worked with the club to develop his design into the crest that has remained largely unchanged to this day.

I drew this so many times when I was younger. On schoolbooks, bags, sometimes desks :) A well drawn Forest tree is art!

I look at the badge constantly and it’s really interesting to know the thinking behind it. One of the simplest, clearest most iconic of football badges. Love it.

I tell ya the truth, as a schoolboy looking at all the entrants in the competition in the days of great crests, we all laughed at that one. Then to our amazement it won!! How wrong were we??? It’s awesome!!! I love it!!
Oh, I have no idea how this story can be verified, but it would not surprise me. And a funny twist to the story. We live to experience surpasses.
My dads a forest fan and I'm from Mansfield myself. I'm also a Graphic designer and I've always loved this iconic design, It's a great mark for a great club and I hope it never changes. The fact that it still look fresh and modern today just shows you how good it is.

Remember going as a 13/14 year old on south yorkshire council coach trips to certain div1 clubs ... spurs, everton, etc
One was to Notts Forest , remember meeting Metgod, Birtles, few others but never the legend, brian...
Later, the guide was telling us about the badge ... i was always into drawing but hearing this great story it gave me inspiration and a great learning curve ...in art and graphic art inparticular ...
So many great club badges and logo's from that era were created v late 60s and early mid 70s (not just in football)... Forest will always be a favourite in football logo's and graphic design terms .

The best crest in football, bar none. I usually HATE minimalist designs that look logo-ish, but the Nottingham Forest Crest is an exception. It’s absolutely perfect.

What a thrill to see Dave Lewis again. He was my graphic design tutor at Trent Poly 50 years ago and was a great teacher and communicator. Great to see him looking so well and still " talking a great game". Made my day. COYR!

I remember being at the ground and hearing the competition being announced over the public address system. I always thought the tail of the 'R' was a leg kickIng the 'e' as a football. I didn't enter the competition, just as well really as I don't think the winning badge could be any better. It's lovely to see the winner.

Really great video, very interesting. Absolutely love the design and although I am biased, surely one of the best and iconic club crests in the world. Even Floresta football club in Brazil used a green version of this badge. Dave Lewis you are a legend, I love your explanation and learning the thinking behind it, inspired.

At one time Blackpool pretty much copied the idea for their badge exchanging the tree for Blackpool Tower and having two instead of three wavy lines.
Lots of sports clubs around the world have copied or imitated the Forest badge!

I was today years old when I found out that the 'e' in Forest is lower case and the rest aren't... started supporting in 2006 and now I feel completely dumb lmao

Supporting FOReST from Ireland, hearing the history behind the Badge design in the 90s, always stuck with me. Seeing the badge on the Trent end is almost emotional, even from a supporter that only Visits seldomly (But as much as possible), Great to hear the story now from the designer himself....P.S will someone ever cut down those two trees blocking the Trent end side view (Or at least cut them back a bit )
