  • The Musée du Louvre is one of the most visited places in Paris, but also worldwide. It is the most visited art museum in the world and one of the largest museums in the world. It houses around 380,000 objects from prehistory to modern times.
The museum is located in the old Palais du Louvre, a 12th century fortress. The building was expanded several times until it reached its current dimensions (60,000 m2). In 1682, Louis XIV decided to move to the Palace of Versailles, and so the Louvre eventually became the place to display the royal collection. In 1692, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, France's most important cultural institution, moved here. During the French Revolution, the new Parliament decided to use the Louvre Palace as a museum to display the country's masterpieces.
