    Episode 44 - The launch of the Sega Genesis in 1989. Sega first entered the home console market in 1983 with the SG-1000, which was released in Asia, Australia, and some parts of Europe. In 1985, the hardware was upgraded and a new system, the Mark III was released. This would become the "Sega Master System" around the world, and although it was only really successful in Europe and Brazil, it blazed the trail for Sega's next system, the 16-bit Mega Drive.
    The Mega Drive, designed around the Motorola 68000 CPU (previously used in Sega's "System 16" arcade hardware" was released in Japan in November of 1988, and was brought over to North America as the "Genesis" less than a year later. Launching on August 14, 1989, the system came bundled with Altered Beast, and 5 additional games were available on day 1: Space Harrier II, Last Battle, Super Thunder Blade, Tommy Lasorda Baseball, and Thunder Force II.
    Initially Sega was competing with NEC's TurboGrafx-16, launched just a week after the Genesis. But Sega's superior hardware and marketing caused the Turbografx to quickly lose ground. For 2 years, the Genesis was the only 16-bit home console on the market, until the Super Nintendo was released in the late summer of 1991. This kicked off the infamous "16-bit Console War", which was a back-and-forth affair, with Sega at one point outselling Nintendo, but ultimately aged hardware and poor decisions by Sega of Japan led to Nintendo ultimately winning out.
    The Genesis was succeeded by the Sega Saturn in 1995, and the Dreamcast in 1999. The former was not a success in North America but was Sega's best-selling system at home. The Dreamcast was an excellent arcade-at-home system that also had a number of excellent home-exclusive titles, but was ultimately Sega's final entry in the hardware market.
    The Genesis was Sega's most iconic and successful console worldwide.
    Show Notes:
    - Much of this show was produced in tandem with the Sega Master System launch episode.
    - The original "Launch of the Sega Genesis" episode was published on May 4, 2014, and was retired with almost 120,000 views. That video had comparatively low production value due to its age, which is why it was replaced.
    - The System-16 board pictured in this episode is Golden Axe, and was the board used in the "History of Golden Axe" episode.
    - All arcade footage used in this episode was generated using emulation. All home console footage was captured from actual hardware.
    - The bulk of this episode was produced during a 5-day stretch in which I was working on it up to 16 hours per day.
    - I found not one but two ways to sneak references to Ayrton Senna into this episode.

    This is a completely re-written and re-produced Genesis launch video that was made from scratch. The old one was delisted after the release of the Master System episode, and I made sure to have this one ready to go to take it's place. The SMS, GEN, and SAT videos now make for a nice contiguous trilogy, with the Dreamcast episode set to finish out the series next year.

      Yeh, they just don't make things with such visual appeal anymore. I did like the look of the remodeled Xbox 360 though and I think the PS3 fat is a pretty nice looking system. It looks premium , which is something the other revisions don't... I also like the Super Famicom/Euro SNES look too.

      Indeed. I think European Mega Drive (and its original branding) is prettiest them all. Then the Japanese one and Genesis last (the actual logo is nice tho), mainly because of that huge Genesis logo at the wrong place. It should be down there where Mega Drive logos are on European and Japanese machines.

      I agree. 'Family Computer' is a 'cool' name. It gets the target demographic's attention but 'Genesis' is a cool sounding name and stands for something in terms of Sega's history (As told in the video). Dreamcast was another cool title as opposed to X-Box and Playstation 2 (Just numbering your systems feels spiritless).

    I'll always be an Altered Beast fan. THat game used to scare/intimidate me for some reason I can't explain. The music mostly. The general atmosphere. The deep voices. Having that come with Genesis as the package game was actually awesome, in my opinion. It was like moving to a different video game world, from Nintendo Mario Kiddie Land to a darker, more powerful place where there were decent voices in video games now and slightly creepy Greek mythology games

    Another great video -- after watching the Master System video, I had to check this one out. My brother and I's Genesis was a workhorse machine for us from the day we opened it -- Christmas 1989. By getting it at Christmas time, we had access to lots more games than at launch, and we played the living heck out of them. My Genesis is still hooked up and running to this day -- still chugging along, good as new.
    Countless hours were spent on that machine, including a full 162 game season on Tommy Lasorda Baseball with my brother playing as the Yankees and I playing as the rest of the AL, with stats kept in a notebook. We would do the same in NHL Hockey, which followed on from Lakers Vs Celtics as we logged too many games to count across all sorts of EA sports games.
    These videos really bring me back to a simpler time, thanks for your great work!

      My Vietnamese friend and I were a couple of horny teenage virgins when we played Streets of Rage. As you recall, there were women enemies who attacked you with a whip. They would kneel down in a defensive position, during which time you could not attack them. You had to wait for them to stand back up before you could hit them again. They were copies of Roxy and Poison from Final Fight.
      You could play as one of 3 fighters: a white blond guy, and black guy, or a woman. All three had jumping maneuvers, which could turn into jump kick if you pressed another button while the fighter was in midair.
      When the woman enemy attacked you with a whip, my firned would crack dirty jokes by saying, "Oh yeah! Whip me baby! It's sexual. She likes it rough!"
      When the woman enemy knelt down in her defensive position. My friend would move his character near her to where the fighter's groin was near her head, and pretend that she was sucking his dick, and emulate sounds from porn movies.
      My friend would play as the blond guy and hit the jump button and say, "Here comes my wiener!"
      I could not stop laughing.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 Před 6 lety +23

      As a Genesis owner, I always hated how the NES owners would rag on my system. Back in late Fall 1990, I proudly told my friend John that my father was going to get me a Sega Genesis for Christmas. John was an NES owner, and immediately started bashing the Genesis. He just went on and on with his badmouthing. It really got under my skin. It was like racism.
      Later on, John got a Super NES and he rubbed my nose in the fact that the Super NES controller had 6 buttons, while the older Genesis had only 3.
      He also criticized Sonic The Hedgehog as a copy of Bonk's Adventure. Other NES lovers said that Sonic the Hedgehog was too easy and not enough of a challenge.
      All those bad experiences made me prejudiced against Nintendo in general. That was why I would never get a Super NES or a Nintendo 64.
      It wasn't until many decades later that I got over my anti-Nintendo prejudice and got a Gamecube. I got it so I could play Resident Evil: The Remake. Later on I got a Wii.
      In retrospect, I will now admit that the Super NES was superior and more technologically advanced (It came 2 years later, after all). The Super NES was the first to carry the legendary and groundbreaking Street Fighter II, the mother of all fighting games. You had to have a Super NES to play SFII. Super NES also carried Final Fight, which was extremely popular in the arcades. And carried the classic Art of Fighting. It managed to get all the cool games. You couldn't get any of that on the Genesis.
      However, I still loved playing Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Batman (based on the '89 movie), Pitfighter, Valis, Streets of Rage, Fighting Masters, and Sonic the Hedgehog on my Genesis in my early college days.

    • @thedrunkmonkshow
      @thedrunkmonkshow Před 7 lety +1

      I was floored with the first one but this one is definitely more thorough so far from what I've seen. I'm at the part where you're discussing Thunder Blade and Super Thunder Blade but I'm of the mindset that it's safe to say Sega definitely was influenced by Blue Thunder because the abundance of other instances of Sega tapping into american pop culture things at the time like Conan, Terminator, Marvel Comics characters, Michael Jackson and so on. I'm willing to bet that if somebody took the time to go back and critically analyze footage of Blue Thunder that there's probably a snippet where Sega hit pause on the VHS, brought in a graphics person to recreate that still for the title screen, and then used that in the game. Because also, notice that the "Gunship Gladiator" depicted during gameplay is far more late 80's boxy and blue color while the title screen is eerily similar to the curvy, early 80's black design of the Blue Thunder lol.
      On a side note you do a damn good job pronouncing Japanese releases. Are you studying Japanese like me or you had to retake those instances 10 times to get it right? lol. :D

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  Před 7 lety +2

      TheDrunkMonkShow Yeah, I read the thing about Thunder Blade maybe being influenced by Blue Thunder, and then I watched the intro video for BL. Obvious "influence". Did I pronounce that right in Japanese? I consulted some online pronunciation resources for that one. Usually I ask my Japanese friend but he wasn't around this week, and I don't speak any Japanese at all.

    • @thedrunkmonkshow
      @thedrunkmonkshow Před 7 lety

      To me you did but I'm just some American learning Japanese. Maybe someone fluent will come behind us will critique both me and you, which I appreciate, but from my years of studying the language you did it right. You seem to have a knack for it. Do you happen to know Spanish because Español shares the shame vowel enunciation as Japanese so it's far easier for Spanish speakers to handle Japanese words than anybody else naturally.

    • @thedrunkmonkshow
      @thedrunkmonkshow Před 7 lety

      Oh and sorry to be extra chatty but I also wanted to say your opinions about Super Thunder Blade greatly persuaded my opinion on the game. With that game just like Super Hang-On on the Genesis I blamed the shoddy controls on the VDP not being savy enough to handle line by line raster graphics in conjunction with the Motorola just like Super Hang-On. But you're right like I can remember the arcade version, the TG16, or Sharp X68k version having quick pixel controls while the Genesis version having floaty controls but I never could articulate it quite in the same way and that's exactly what the frustration issue is. Of course framerate would help tremendously but fundamentally on a programming level by the developers the controls seem to have incorporated this acceleration/deceleration algorithm with going up, down, left or right to where in end result your plane slides too much during non-input. The Master System had arcade controls but the frame rate caused a lot of frustrating deaths kinda like After Burner lol. But it's good to have these discussions and once again I thank you for all you do!

    • @Fattydeposit
      @Fattydeposit Před 7 lety +6

      John De Visser Why the facepalm? Shinobi sold a ton of Master Systems. I agree it was a shame not to get a close-to-perfect arcade port on the Mega Drive but obviously Sega wanted newly designed-for-home-play versions of Shinobi at the time, hence Super Shinobi and Shadow Dancer MD

    • @DominikSobolewski
      @DominikSobolewski Před 7 lety +8

      John De Visser Shinobi is an arcade game ported to Master System. Sega should have ported a near arcade version of the game, as it wasn't too old since the launch of Mega Drive in Japan (Shinobi:1987, Mega Drive: 1988).

    • @DominikSobolewski
      @DominikSobolewski Před 7 lety +5

      John De Visser Shinobi in fact ran on Sega-16 hardware, which the Genesis/Mega Drive derived from. Would have showcased the powerhouse that was the Genesis, in addition to the other arcade ports that came around. I guess it's a resource thing.
