Some commenters mentioned that the Little Note Book microludes could simultaneously be expanded while still working on their own terms. I wanted to push back against this idea, because I wanted to hang onto the feeling that each of the microludes were as complete as possible. But, microlude no. 47, the final in Little Note Book 3, suggested to me a scaffolding for a fully fleshed out work. It was visually symmetrical, although not symmetrical across the hands, and so I wanted to create a longer work with the sense that the material was circling itself, not so much repeating the same thing, but instead in the sense of creating two poles of energy feeding and balancing off each other. In other words- a reflection on the water, an imperfect mirror image, a yin and yang each containing their own worlds but supporting each other in their rotation.
