I feel bad for whoever's job it was at Warner Bros to tell David Chase he had to be a part of this.
Hahaha, he's like "Can I go now?"
very rare
I could be wrong but he seems like a very reserved person. I'm very reserved and I know if I was in a situation like this I'd probably come off the same way.
I think he is upset bc his wife which he has been with since high school is sick.
When Sian talked about having a "Lost Daughter" moment, of wanting to get away, that's what David Chase was probably having at that moment...
David chase really doesn't want to be there🤣🤣🤣😭
I love these Roundtable discussions
I am not sure if David Chase just doesn't want to be here or if that is just his resting face - at 46:06 he literally moves his chair away from the rest of the group.
He does not want to be here
These round tables used to be so dynamic and fun, with real insight, and how people developed their work, but something has change, still enjoyable but not at the same level.
I feel the same too. It's like it lost its natural flow/organic way of having a conversation. It feels like everybody is waiting for their turn to be "interviewed". Love everybody in this roundtable, though.
One more thing I would point out is,, whoever edited this whole video did a poor job. So many cuts in random places. It took me out many times.
@@greenozoid yes you're right the cuts are very hard, I didn't even finished the conversation, and play back the round tables from 2017 and 2018, they where like fresh air! Lol.
Yes! I was thinking that. Every time it started to feel organic, the host would shut it down to get in the next question. Or the editing would yank me out of the moment. There is an art to facilitating easy, fluid conversations between people and I don't see it here.
You're right and I think the light theme music, tone and behind-the-scenes interactions really made these roundtables. I hope they bring back that essence in future episodes.
I think the reason why everybody here feels like waiting for their turn to be interviewed is because they're not seasoned enough. With the exception of David Chase, all of the rest don't have much experience in writing yet. Maggie is an experienced actress but this is her first direction and screenplay; Jeymes is more experienced with music but this is also his first feature film; Zach Baylin is another complete newcomer; Sian Heder is the only other one besides David Chase who is more experienced, having made 2 feature films and written many episodes of Orange Is the New Black, but she's also not at all as experienced as David; and David clearly does not want to be there.
I hope that they invited Sean Baker for the director's roundtable!
I truly appreciate this roundtable episode. Thank you
These roundtables are awesome
Bring back the dark room! Also this is a very strange lineup, no more diverse than past years but somehow missing the wisdom of more familiar veteran Hollywood writers with the exception of David Chase, who seems fully aware he doesn’t belong in this group.
@@JDelvaMusic I’m saying this group isnt more diverse than previous years but still completely lacking any actually seasoned writers
I've preferred the dark room
David Chase at 26:46 lol
I like Maggie and loved her film. I find it odd that she is taking a stance about how she didn't grow up around female filmmakers. She's the daughter of a screenwriter/producer and a director. Was she just not paying attention when her mother was making films? Hollywood is undoubtedly sexist, but I don't buy this story that she didn't realize it was an option for her.
Because she's a feminist and creating a narrative of oppression , patriarchy illumanti's and victimhood is as natural as breathing to those of that ilk. She has certainly never experienced any oppression and neither has her mother, grandmother , great grandmother and great great grandmother. The feminists see oppressions that happened a ridiculously long time ago and decided to punish todays children for the perceived indiscretions of their great great great great great great great great great great grandfathers. Its a mentality of we suffered 800 years ago so now we attack you and make you feel bad so you can experience the oppression , pain and suffering that I MYSELF have *never* experienced
@@laurarules3642 You sound unhinged.
@@laurarules3642 u mad lol
@@DanielMartinez-yq8jz How can you not be mad at those toxic morons? Marching in the streets about imaginary oppressions that they have *NEVER* experienced. I hate to break it to you but women always have been the most privileged and protected group in the entire history of the world and they have more rights and *special* privileges than any man. Its not about equality with that cult of doom its about superiority and power. And that ladies and gentleman is what all bullies seek superiority and power because there lives are so meaningless it makes them feel important for 30 seconds
@@laurarules3642 ahh internalized misogyny. Please seek help, you are truly delusional.
Fascinating & important discussion with Sian, Zach & even Jeymes regarding writers, or any artist working on subjects outside of their personal experience. I feel it is possible, but requires the artist to do a lot more work in order to better understand the material.
David looks like it's painful for him to be there.
Rockford files was beyond its time. Yes, why is David on this panel other than the guy with the most experience. I love him saying his wife supported them for a time and he felt like he sold out doing tv because it was a check. That’s how life is like if you’re lucky in the world…have a job that pays the bills. Agree that yes, Maggie-your moms been doing this all your life!
It's great seeing David here. He's a legend.
But he clearly did not want to be there lmao
I really enjoyed Maggie, Sian, and Jeymes! Their interaction felt so natural and honest. They made great points, too!
Beep boop
Has there been a shake-up with the producer(s) of these roundtables? Because the entire production, top to bottom, is a little *different*, let’s say, compared to years prior.
Very different. I miss the dark room which made it feel more intimate. I also miss them sitting all around the table instead of the half circle now. Because it made you feel like they were alone. The half circle seating makes it less intimate because you’re aware they’re sitting on a panel being filmed.
Yeah, it feels and looks a lot cheaper than pre-pandemic.
Jeymes Samuel is always full of energy. Love it
There is a world with which Jeymes Samuel is the dopest human being.
His personality is so infectious.
this one- im tired of black talent being stifled- he is such a joy we need more visibility
I feel like Jeymes is my looking lost twin brother🤣🤣🤣I completely understand his train of thought lol
The Sopranos guy has just given up on life.
He has really severe depression and is just generally a downbeat guy.

Did anyone notice the incredibly large decrease in camera quality on the roundtable series?
YES
@@MidnightVideo IM GLAD IM NOT CRAZY
@@ConnorMalbeuf It's especially noticeable in the opening when they're staring at the cameras (which that part even feels weird in general)
@@MidnightVideo agreed!!! it's so bad........ man oh man what happened...
@@ConnorMalbeuf It feels more like a cable access show now.
I LOOOOOOVE THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER ROUNDTABLES!!!!! I learn SO MANY VALUABLE THINGS as a writer!
Disagree with everyones comments about David Chase, he is the only real one there that isn't crapping on about how their movie is soooo important
incredible
We are fortunate to be in a world in which we can watch such beautiful stories come alive :)
My fave roundtable so far of the ones put out this year especially liked hearing from Maggie, Jeymes, and Sian
The sound mix on these has been weird. The moderator is louder than the guests.
There's David Chase... Then everyone else!
sean evans from hot ones should host these shows.
Did you guys shoot his on an iPhone 3?
You can tell David Chase soooo doesn’t want to be stuck at this table listening to DEI talk for an hour.
The Many Saints of Newark? One of the best scripts of the year? You sure about that?
Let's be real... The Lost Daughter is the only movie represented here that's particularly well-written. MAYBE The Harder They Fall if you really want to stretch it.
Jeymes is amazing
David Chase literally says that he sold out and wrote the movie because he was strapped for cash... makes sense now
How is he strapped for cash after the success of sopranos
Funny, for someone who didn't want to do another teenage girl movie it end up being that and I didn't get the MAJOR adaptation vibe after seeing both movies (location, family business and the songs were all the changes). I enjoyed the subject both times and laughed at the same jokes twice.
how cool are the three in the middle? could listen to them for hours
This new roundtable style makes me miss the old ones.
Where is Rebecca Hall? you guys keep discredited Passing, one of the best films in 2021
Where's Paul Thomas Anderson?
That is a top 10 roundtable!!! They need to interview the studio execs again and what COVID-19 has done to the business model
Agreed
Why is David Chase here? Did they think The Many Saints Of Newark was gonna be an Oscars contender?
Should’ve tried to get Paul Anderson
@@jon8004
The age-gap is a sophomoric provocation from a childish filmmaker.
@@jon8004
Compared to the filmmakers he appropriates (Demme, Mamet, Altman, Huston, Kubrick, Antonioni), he's a neonate.
Sean Baker should've been there
BRING THE DARK ROOM BACK!
27:22 david is dying
Lmaoooo
Hahahahahaha
Now why did they use David chase as click bait
24 minutes in. Are David Chase or Zach Baylin ever going to talk?

- Fortunately, I don't bring up race non-stop in my conversations. And don't find a way to bring everything back to race and skin colour.
- He is not from some unfortunate upbringing. His brother is Seal. He's doing alright.
- Nearly every thing he brought up had to do with skin colour and race. Is that all he wants to be known for? Isn't he genuinely talented? Lets hear more about that and what he wants to create.
- Oh so great and wise one, what were we 'meant' to 'take away' "from everything he said"? 🤦🏿♂What other topic did he bring up non-stop, but race and skin colour?
Bonjour
David Chase looks so bored and annoyed. Lol.
Is it me or the round tables the past two years have been very reserved... like bring back Tarantino 😭😭.. I need some chaos and banter... why so serious?
Tarantino is retired dude.
The actors one with Nic Cage before this one was great. They all talked to each other and the host didn’t cut them off to get to the next question nor unnecessarily pivot to the guy who isn’t engaged in the conversation.
Where’s the Oscar winning best screenplay writer of card counter?
David Chase feels so out of place here!
Did Seal not share some of that mega money with his family? Jeymes Samuel is his younger brother.
Whaaaaaat??
This set looks so cold. Prefer the old one. Bring back the vibrancy of the previous versions
should’ve been PTA, Jeymes, Sian, Mike Mills, and Sean Baker
The vibe is off with this one.
I totally have a crush on Maggie Gyllenhaal cause she's so we'll spoken. Articulate and well thought through intention. :)
❤❤❤👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
RACHEELLLLLLLLLL
I will always love David for creating The Sopranos. But Newark was just plain awful on every level.
yup . If felt like there were about 6 hours missing from that film .
He seems bored. He’s like “why am I here?” Lol
Glad Maggie learnt from her last Roundtable not to talk about herself, interrupt and be entitled the whole hour.
She is so 'droopy'.
Love these convos but what happened to the original room?? This setting feels too cold and thrown together, like it's in some forgotten room in city hall. Even the chairs are flimsy and cafeteria-ish. I know this is nit-picky.
Its not nitpicky, its true
I don't know if it's David Chase or the moderator but the energy gets very dull in this conversation when either of them chime in. The others are excellent though!
I think they're all extremely pretentious.
David Chase doesn't chime.
The flow is: Moderator > Guest > Moderator > Guest > Moderator > Guest. There is no rapport between the Guests.
So, it's pretty much a dead-end, one-turn-at-a-time talk, rather than a "roundtable" as branded/advertised.
Prefer the previous moderator, the British journalist Stephen Galloway. Sure, he’s not the most warm or has a lot of personality like a cotton candy host. But at least his Roundtables are not boring. The current Roundtables are so BORING! Not just with this lovely moderator, but she did a really well and so were the other moderators. 👏 Now we know why actors become actors cause their personalities are so dull. At least with Stephen, his “cut off answers once he got the answer & next to other actors” method brought some emotions in the actors so their reactions won’t be so dull, be it anger which they’re were trying to hold against him for being cold etc. Stephen’s questions were relevant to the society & what is going on in the current industry. And somewhat philosophical & intelligent. Like I said he may not be the warmest, may seems disrespectful in other ppl eyes cause he was a bit cold but he doesn’t do it own purpose and he was not trying to be conniving. He is not a talk show! Speaking of talkshow these days, they asked questions just for the sake of entertainment, which differs from journalism. At least he asked questions that shows real interests in the craft of film, theatre and acting. Rather than treating his guests like celebrities which people are more focus on gossiping news than interested in the work they’ve produced. I feel more interested in them & their work, able to take them seriously seeing how passionate they talk about their crafts & experiences. During his Roundtables, he’s willing to take the bullet of making himself look like a bad guy so that the actors can be treated more seriously on how they conducted themselves when answering his questions. People tend to missed out on that, which actually was a clever move but some they chose to think irrationally and take it personally . Rather than some people who try to ask all nice and warm but are just traitors and doesn’t bring out the best in an actor it’s almost like actors are just actors boring questions boring answers than wow it’s not easy being an actor same goes being a director, producers, comedians etc. We hope they will bring him back to be the host of the Roundtables. Let’s make people in this industry smart and talented again through a round interviews like this with a clever host who is genuinely interested in the craft and asks intelligent questions.
Wow I didn't know Maggie wrote and directed it to
Why is there always a person at the table that talks less than a minute in the whole thing?? As an introvert, I get it but....why?😅
Take David Chase outta this
🤩✨🤩🤩✨🤩
i cant believe bullitts dropped charlotte gainsbourg and jay z but not jay electronica, thats sacrilege
I love that this table has women and men. I hate when they separate by genders as if it matters. Actors are actors. Directors are directors etc.
There is great value in talking to an all women roundtable... men not so much. Practically every all women actors roundtable talk about the pay gap and how women are represented within the industry. Despite them being recurring topics, we get different perspective.
Many Saints???? Are you focusing on the worst scripts of the year?
what a weird choice of writers for this year, I guess they couldn't get the bigger ones?
I love the three in the middle. They’re great choices. But I wish they’d taken out David Chase and Baylin. The Newarks movie was mediocre. And I liked Bailey here but King Richard was only ok.
I don’t think it’s a weird group- at least 3 of the 5 are very likely to get Oscar nominations and a 4th wrote and created one of the greatest and most influential TV series ever broadcast.
@@hupotasso4705 Yeah, and that one that created on of the greatest and most influential TV series ever bothered saying about 4 things the entire time. The whole point of these roundtables is to talk and share perspective, and it's pretty evident that David's seat would have been better served with someone else, one way or the other.
Here for Jeymes Stayed or jeymes
still mad at maggie I wouldnt have taken that role
Not everything is about skin pigmentation, genitalia, or bedroom practices. These things are not earned and thus should not be hailed as premier credentials in writing or creating anything meaningful. The question at 34:05 is particularly absurd. If we really want to solve problems, the first step is getting over ourselves.
I disagree in a sense of the question being absurd. The answers given is what’s important. Writers listening need to hear how you can write that story that’s not their experience in a tasteful way that gives the story purpose. If a person feels the need to disregard factors about what makes up the character’s journey that person isn’t the best person to tell it. Let’s be real there had been tons of stereotypes and false narratives perpetuated thru film. I don’t care who writes as long as from a position of love for the story they want to tell. .
The moderator sounds and looks like Ted Cruz 😬
There was a time when everybody didn't pretend like their career choices and the movies they made were made to right a wrong or save the world. Now EVERY damn actor and actress and director and producer has a prepared story about how THEIR movie is really about changing the world for the better and it's so boring to watch. This was such a dull affair that could have used someone interesting. Like Sorkin.
