+Austin's Garage I think the Yugo would win, but the Trabant would hold together longer. Oh wow. I just calculated it, and the power to weight ratio of the two cars is not super different.
How the race would go: "Going around the second corner- the Yugo has exploded and the Trabant has been attacked by a large pig- the pig is now eating the Trabant- oh, oh, OH! The driver is using the steering system as a weapon and has chucked e engine at the pig... I've never seen anything like this!"
...That was something special with the Trabant, it's sooooo damn sturdy. As a Child, my Grandpa drove with me over fields with the Trabant, and it never broke. you will never to those things with a Golf, but that Trabant was awesome in this. The most streets in the GDR where shit, so it had to be so sturdy. My other Grandpa had a Wartburg, but that was not the same. It was the better car, but not for the country side. I just drove my Grandpas Trabant once after he died and I wanted to check, if it's allready running and it was so much fun. You drive 90km/h and you feel like flying ^^ ...
To be fair: he was possibly the only driver that used a stock configuration. Pretty sure all others had modifiend suspention and other things for this racing. East german race driver modified the engin up to ~60Hp and with propper modified running gear the car did realy well in such cross race situations.
Seeing how fantastic of a trampoline your Trabant is, it's truly perplexing that the communists didn't build them all with "double bubble" style cotton roofs to allow room for pilot & copilot helmets.
They did. Google Trabant Kübel. It was the cotton roof version for the military and agriculture. It was especially good in ruth terrain. The low weight was preventing from getting stuck in mud or sand. And if it did, the low weight alloed easy pulling. it from the mud.
I've read in a book once, that back in the days, the official factory rally team of Trabant was quite successful on big rallies. They won 2nd place on the Monte Carlo Rally in 1968, where only the local French driver was better, and also 2nd place on the München-Wien-Budapest rally in 1969, where only Porsche was faster. I couldn't find anything about this on the web, but hey, these happened decades before the internet...
Well, I once saw a bunch of racing Trabants (200 km/h) on a tight race track and other old cars on the same track. The '68 Mustang did far worse than the Trabants. Also, I experienced them in Dresden Germany on rough cobble streets and had no chance to follow them!
Robert just rally crossed a Trabbi. Holy shit. This is one of the best things ever put on CZcams. I am sure some German, Polish, or Hungarian guy has done something like this with a Trabbi he modified specifically for rally cross. However, Robert's is totally stock. This is fucking amazing. This channel is criminally undersubscribed! Easily one of the most entertaining car channels on CZcams by far.

As soon as you let him run free on a beautiful summer's day he will turn into a little mustang. Running around an open field, kicking up dirt and joyfully (almost) killing the rider.
This was a GREAT video, I used to club race another slow weird car, an Austin Kimberley and really, It was so much fun to Dirt circuit time trial a car that put no expectations on me.
This sounds like my interest in trying autocross (or maybe something like this) in the West German version, my '73 VW Super Beetle. I'm sure it would be quite a bit quicker and better handling, but maybe not quite as much fun. Would similarly have no concern for times or how I would compare with other cars. Especially as I have an aftermarket steering wheel, aftermarket intake and exhaust, aftermarket ECU (it was originally carbureted, so the whole fuel injection system is aftermarket), aftermarket rear sway bar, aftermarket front brakes - none of these make it that much faster - I'll be in the "Highly Modified" category going up against racecars built on 20x my budget. But who cares, it sounds fun!
Using Trabants for autocross has been done, people usually swap in a VW Polo 16v engine and gearbox and (obviously) do some suspension and brake mods. I saw a video of a total 360 degree rollover where the body was unscathed and they continued on the track.
How on earth did I miss this video! How does the Trabant perform now that you've rebuilt the engine? And, what kind of gas mileage does the thing get you? I can't wait for you to start posting videos again, quality entertainment!

Oh man, you should try rallycrossing a Lada VFTS, or just a simple Zhiguli. In the country you bought your Trabant from, rally Ladas (and actually Trabants) are a big thing. (Trabants are very light, so if you pimp up the suspension and change the engine, you get a nice little rally car.)
I just can't stop laughing at the way the Trabant bounces over those fields! And the way you have to tame it rather than drive it? I've driven cars like that. It's great! XD My nephew rolled his Morris Minor van and it landed on its wheels. I just.. I wish I'd been there. :)
