  • Our "Introduction to Adult Kick Scooting" video is designed to show how adults of all ages can use kick scooters.
    To date, many videos that feature kick scooters dwell on scooter tricks (freestyle), on a brand, or on a person rolling through city streets or along a park path. Our video, however, describes different sized adult scooters and how they are used. Its pictures emphasize the use of those scooters while touring, although it needs to be noted that kick scooters make wonderful commuter vehicles right in your home town.
    The following kick scooter brands appear on this video simply because I own most of them: Xootr, Kickboard USA, NYCeWheels, Razor, Micro Sidewalker, GoPed, Groffdale Amish Scooters, and Mibo Scooters. Visit www.LetsKickScoot.com to learn more about them and other brands.
    Photographers are my husband and myself. Given the subject of a photo, you should be able to figure out who took the picture.
    The cast includes friends and family, with ScooterJerry (Jerry Szubin), our website's Contributing Editor. Music is by Lagoona, entitled "Whispers."
    The script was written and delivered by me, as was the video.

    I have lived in urban areas and commuted by public transit for 20 years. For a long time I rode a folding bike, because I simply did not have room for a full sized bike. At the end, I got sick of dirty chains, brake dust, flat tires. I walked for a while, and then I got a kick scooter (Razor A5 Lux) a year ago. The kick scooter allows me to extend my range while being inexpensive, lightweight, almost zero maintenance, and able to fit in car trunks, trains, under my desk, etc. I ride on sidewalks or bike lanes. It does not feel as dangerous because top speed is lower than a bike's. Kick scooting is now part of my commute from the train station to work. It builds in a fun activity and much needed exercise. Coasting along with the wind in my face always makes my inner child smile, and I have lost a few pounds since I started commuting on my scooter. A few drawbacks: you do need good pavement to scoot on. Old, broken pavement is too jarring and perilous for hard polyurethane wheels. Also, there is no mechanical advantage on hills, and descent is hard on your brakes. As with all activities, it takes time and moderation for your body to adapt. My Achilles tendon ached when I first started, and my groin muscles get tweaked if I get overly enthusiastic (which happens a lot). All in all, I love to ride my scooter, and I hope more adults take it up. Driving less, being outside and being active are all wins in our modern world. Get on your scooters and ride!

    Thank you for this video. I am 60 and just ordered a Razor A5 Lux. It is good to see others close to my age and especially a women riding a scooter.
    I ride an electric assist bike for shopping and short trips from the house. I am hoping my balance will be good enough to scoot.
    One of the main reasons I got the scooter was to be able to scoot home or cover part of my destination that is not on our limited bus service. I don't like to bike after a massage or chiropractic treatment. My chiro doctor told me it was best not to after an adjustment. So now I can scoot there and ride the bus back! Again, our bus service is limited, 45 minutes between buses and the chiro only takes about 10-15 minutes. There is a dedicated paved recreational path for me to get to the chiro, that I hope will be pretty smooth on the scooter. Part of the trip will be on sidewalks so I'll need to see how that goes with the bumps.

    Hi Doug - this video was the first of 3 that I have made so far and was intended to demonstrate kick scooter sizes AND help me learn how to use Cyberlink PowerDirector 12. At the time, I only had static images, which were taken over a 4 year period to work with. Beginning mid-June, I'll be creating a series on the parks that run along the Hudson River, from Weehawken, NJ/Midtown Manhattan to the Statue of Liberty Park, NJ/Downtown Manhattan. I hope to introduce people to fantastic vacation and daytrip options beyond Central Park and great new places to kick scoot (as well as stroll, bike, etc.).

    Love your video. I have a kick scooter and love it!!! I see more people starting to use them. I am a scooter commuter. Easy to ride to the station and then fold them up and take them with you on the train.

    Useful content. Thanks. (Static images not as compelling or effective as live video could be, but that's a lot more time and effort.)

    Great video! Just ordered a scooter. Not sure if it is the right type for me but have to start somewhere. I was wondering about getting a bike but I bet the things you mention in the video would bother me... such as sitting for so long. Also I don't think you mentioned bending over. I actually got it because I have been trying to learn to use a skateboard, and have been having problems with balance. I figured why buy a balance board when all I could do was learn to balance on it? At least I can ride a scooter probably. You can see some videos of me trying to learn to skate on my channel, and I will put up vids of the scooter when I get it.

      I am writing here in response to your bicycle comment. Sitting on a bike is not like sitting in a chair. I have, degenerative disc disease, of the spine and I ride a bike. I cannot walk 50 feet without crutches and I cannot sit long, because, it hurts badly. But, when I ride, and I am 60, I am not in pain at all and I can ride 3 days a week at 20 miles each time...and no pain. I do suggest that you don't ride a bike where you will sit up straight, like with, a commuter bike,or city bike...you want to lean forward reaching for the hand grips to take pressure off your backside and spine. You don't need one of those big cushy seats either, just a typical seat, with springs for bumps that has padding for your butt bones.

    I appreciate the effort at education here but you seriously need to lose the ad-speak. Claiming that scooting doesn't stress your knees is just plain stupid. There has to be a way to explain the benefits of kick-scooting without making up a bunch of bull about negative effects of other environmentally friendly modes of transportation e.g. bicycles.

    • @LetsKickScoot
      @LetsKickScoot  Před 9 lety +3

      Ho.ard Bikes hey, I take it that you've never had butt pain when biking! With respect to not stressing knees, an additional comment could be added "when scooting on the level." Knees would get strained going uphill, just as they can get strained on a bike. All that said, people scoot and bike, so don't get your shorts up in a knot . . .

      Sorry I wasn't keeping up with comments, so here in 2018, I'll respond to this. Unfortunately, in 2016, I got cancer and had to give up the website letsKickScoot.com to a very able partner. I'm OK today, but now that I see your comment, I need to clarify things. If you get a kick scooter with a very low floorboard height (2.5" is ideal with 3" the maximum), and solid 8" or larger tires), you will probably not hurt your knees. From 3.25" on up, especially at 3.5" to 5", you probably will. We had severally articles on the subject when I published the site, many of which are on the new site. I was particularly fond of the Oxelo Town 9, which is not sold in the US, although sometimes is available through Amazon. It was the only kick scooter I 100% recommended as it has a low floorboard, a handbrake (which further reduces knee strain), and shock absorption. In summary, before you buy a kick scooter, check floorboard height and best, check whether it has a hand brake.
