  • Hola! Did you know that there are different styles of Spanish dance?
Get to know some of them! Tania gives a super quick overview:
    1. FLAMENCO
Distinctive features are 3 key elements:
    Dance (Baile)
    Song (Cante)
    Guitar (Toque)
So you'll be seeing a team of dancer, singer and guitarist (and sometimes a person clapping, or a percussionist on the cajón.)
What I find exciting is its SPONTANEITY and IMPROVISATION. But for this, we need to train greatly! - to master rhythms, familiarise ourselves with different styles of flamenco (palos), understand the song (cante).
Importantly, we need to understand HOW TO COMMUNICATE between dancers, singers, and guitarists (wordlessly, with our FLAMENCO CODES, body language - intention, energy, instinct etc!)
CLASSICAL SPANISH DANCE / CLÁSICO ESPAÑOL
This is danced to the beautiful music of great composers (for eg, Granados, Manuel de Falla, Albeñiz). There is a score for these compositions and you can hear it being interpreted by orchestras, string ensembles, solo instruments like the piano. We have also danced it to a harp quartet!
It's very interesting for us to dance to the different renditions of live music. Stylistically, this form of dance is elegant with a Spanish character, as it is influenced by both flamenco as well as the balletic Escuela Bolera.
    ESCUELA BOLERA
This literally translates to 'Bolero School'. If at first glance, you think it's ballet, then you are right, because Escuela Bolera is danced balletically. We wear ballet shoes for this.
One key difference - we dance with castanets too! Escuela Bolera is elegant and refined. Musically speaking, we dance to the music of the Rondalla (an ensemble of string instruments including the guitar, mandolin and lute)
    REGIONAL FOLK DANCES
Spain has different regions and each region has their special dances. For eg, in Sevilla, Southern Spain, we dance a lot of Sevillanas. Particularly at the Feria de Abril (April Fair), the largest party in April! There are other folk dances such as the Jota from the North.
