  • Hello everyone!
And happy new year; what should've been the last video of 2020 became the first of 2021. Despite being one of my shortest arrangement, this has been by far the most time-consuming. It is due to two things: the arrangement process in itself was quite ambitious for me, and moreover, I decided to record myself this time.
This is a symphonic piece from the Fire Emblem Awakening, which has one of my favourite OST of all time; I just love the compositions and the orchestration, it sounds very unique. I decided to arrange this piece in particular because I haven't found any piano arrangement for it so far, and because it really catched my attention: it reminds me a lot of post-romantic music, especially Rachmaninoff's one, with this continuous flow and unusual harmonies. So my main inspiration arranging this was Rachmaninoff, and more precisely Volodos' piano transcriptions of Rach's orchestral works (Zdes Khorosho, for example). I'm miles away from Volodos' genius and mastery of overlaping melodies (he really sounds like he has three hands sometimes lol), but I did my best to recreate what I think cool about his music. So, a lot of triplets against duplets/8th notes (basic polyrhythms), and counterpoint/polyphony. The first and last part are closer to Bach's style tho, with some question/answer structure with right and left hand (see 1:27 for example), almost a canon sometimes: I only reproduced what was in the original piece there, and I thought it was important to keep it.
About the recording: I recorded it with MIDI through my digital piano (Kawai ES-100), through Pianoteq 6 which is a fabulous piano VST, quite close to the sound and feedback of an acoustic piano imo. The dynamics and the "rubato" were so important for this piece that I didn't want to use musescore mechanical recording as I usually do. Gonna be honest tho: even though everything you hear has been recorded on my piano, it is definitely not a single take lol, it would've taken me 2-3 more weeks to be able to play it well from start to finish. I didn't have time to do this so I learned several segments separately, did as many takes as required to have something decent, and then connected them to make it sound continuous.
The goal was to give an idea of what the interpretation could be for people who want to learn it, even though it is far from perfect, especially concerning dynamics control which could be way better. But I've spent more than enough time on this arrangement already so I'll accept it as it is lol.
Also the notation is quite a mess, I have NO IDEA what is the time signature of this piece, and after some hesitation I had to make some choices.
I hope you'll like it anyway! This will probably be the only video for a while, since I won't have time to work on new ones anytime soon; so, see you next time!

Wow that's really nice to listen to. This was always one of my favorite tracks because of the dreamy, emotional vibe it has. It sounds good on piano!
