  • Traveling towards Tagbilaran, I find the ruins of a very old church built from 1855 to 1864, a 9 year project. The October 15 2013 earthquake brought the church down in just a few moments. See the plaza ruins as they have remained since the disaster. The parishioners have stacked the building stones around the property waiting to rebuild their church.

we visited Bohol 6 weeks before the quake. We visited a couple of the more historic churches in Baclayon and Carmen. I felt so bad for these people because you could tell when they spoke that they took so much pride in these buildings that were built around 160 years before the American revolution. I hope you see more building around the island.

Some serious damage from that earthquake, Mike. I feel sorry for those people. Hopefully they get help for their rebuilding efforts.

A few meters behind the ruins is a 212-step, five-flight coral-stone stairway that was also partially destroyed by the quake. It has since been restored. It is a very beautiful built heritage.

I've been browsing the prices of real estate / vacant lots in Bohol around the 2000 sq./m size, they're reasonably priced but its earth quake history back in 1990 and 2013 has kind of discouraged me. Now, I've been browsing the Valencia, Dauin, Bacong Negros Oriental area now for future retirement.

Mike, is there such a thing as Earthquake Insurance in the Philippines? If you own a condo as a foreigner would it be a total loss if it was destroyed? It is good to show what can happen without warning to contrast the beauty of this area.

Those are coral-stone blocks, not limestone. Most old churches in Bohol use the same material.
