  • Robert Irwin has seen firsthand how much getting diagnosed with and treated for endometriosis has helped his sister Bindi Irwin. "She's actually a new woman. She is a new person," the wildlife conservationist told Access Daily's Mario Lopez and guest co-host Courtney Lopez in a new interview. "I've kind of inadvertently become a big women's health advocate recently." Robert also spoke about this weekend’s Steve Irwin Gala Dinner and carrying on his father’s legacy. The 2023 Steve Irwin Gala Dinner will be held Saturday at the SLS Hotel Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Tickets are sold out. For more information on the event, visit the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner website. For more info on ways you can make a difference in wildlife conservation, check out the Wildlife Warriors website. Watch Robert on "Access Daily" on May 10.

    Endometriosis is a terrible thing. I was diagnosed a few years ago and had never even heard of it before. We have two teenage boys but simply didn't understand why I couldn't get pregnant again. I had two surgeries after I was diagnosed, we went through several rounds of IVF and still nothing. My heart goes out to Bindi. It's not easy to deal with.

    My inner child is healed a little bit more every time I listen to Robert and know the legacy Steven and Terri cultivated lives on through him. The energy and compassion and ability to captivate people through storytelling is what draws people in and makes them care about these things that we should care about. I'm glad the younger generations now still have a wonderful family to look up to and guide them to love animals the way Steve did with me.

    I will never forget the moment I knew Steve had passed. I had walked into my mom's bedroom, and the TV was on, and at the bottom of the screen were scrolled words that said "Steve's last adventure". My heart just broke. Steve's gift to the world was not only conservation but he really showed the world how to embrace ALL of who you are, no matter what anyone might think.

      I was also hanging out in my parent’s room. My mom was on the chunky desktop checking the news. She gasped, “Oh my God! Steve Irwin died!”
      I immediately asked “Was it a crocodile?!”
      I just knew it was animal related and figured it’d be a croc.
      I was devastated and inconsolable. I felt so bad for them.
      He was and still is, and will forever be my hero.
      I love the Irwins and the animals more!

I've been following a small social media influencer, life_as_saylor, who recently underwent this surgery. Hopefully more people start speaking up about this so we can get solutions. Endometriosis unfortunately runs in my family. Every woman in my home deals with it. And as a man, it is incredibly difficult to have to watch them suffer such tremendously painful menstrual cycles. And it isn’t just the pain, it’s the throwing up and the passing out and just literally being sick for like a week every single month. My sister describes the pain as feeling like your being stabbed with a million knives all over. It isn’t just uncomfortable cramps, it’s debilitating pain that makes you double over in agony. My mother underwent the same surgery as Bindi and my sister isn’t too far behind. Another unfortunate part of endometriosis is the fact that it can and does cause premature infertility. My mother desperately wanted more babies after my sister, but unfortunately couldn’t conceive again. My sister is almost in her 30s and we’re afraid her window is closing soon as well. The truly sad thing is, she desperately wants children and doesn’t know if she’ll be able to have any on her own. That’s part of the emotional pain of endometriosis.

      Yep, I ended up with a hysterectomy before I was 30 (due to stage 4 endometriosis). I never was able to have children. I think it must be terribly hard for family members to witness life with endometriosis. Thanks for sharing your comment!

      @Sirius-ly Před rokem +2

      So true. Miscarriages, as well. Roller-coaster ride between doctors not recognizing it, not knowing how to treat it, or convinced it's all in your head doesn't help, either. I started in doubled-over pain in my teens in the 70's when some doctors believed menstrual or endometrial pain was all psychosomatic. Several miscarriages and laparoscopies later I finally found a doctor who understood. But, there was no treatment back then. And for many years. I'm now in my 60's with no children, and actually the very last person in my Mother's line. We always wondered why there were so few children, going back over 100 years. Shame there are so few really caring doctors willing to go the extra mile to really help sick people. When you find one, don't let them go.

      @@kimbo500 it threw me into pseudo menopause! It was horrible! They tried 6 months and gave up on that. Did 4 laporoscopies with laser, and it grew back even faster. I was told the same thing would happen with hystorectomy. Doctors arguing amongst themselves as to who was right and who was wrong. Referrals after referrals. Then the scar tissue attacked my colon. Years and years of that followed. It's just a horrid disease!

    • @kimbo500
      @kimbo500 Před rokem +2

      @@Sirius-ly We could be twins! I used to sit in the seat furthest back in our van with the window open in the middle of Chicago winters due to the intense hot flashes. They say surgical menopause is more intense than natural menopause. For me, my surgical menopause was nothing compared to my Danazol and Lupron treatments! Pain wise, I felt better immediately after my hysterectomy than the endometriosis pain I had the many years prior to my surgery. I'm so sorry you went through all of that too. It's amazing what our bodies went through, and amazing how we could push on through - simply because we had too! So glad those days are over for me, but feel bad for the others who are currently suffering. They are learning more re: treatment.....just certainly not enough.

  • @kimbo500

    I dealt with stage 4 endometriosis for almost 10 years. During those first 10 yrs, I'd be on the medication treatment for the max # of months allowed (3), and then that treatment had to be halted. Usually within 3 mos of completing the meds, I was headed back to surgery for laparoscopic lysis of the numerous and deep adhesions that had regrown and attached to numerous organs. The endometriosis would grow back again within a few mos of surgery, and the cycle would repeat. During those yrs, the adhesions were so large and deep, that it lead to the removal of a tube & ovary during one of the laparoscopic procedures. After 10 years of this medication/surgical cycle of treatments...I had a total abdominal hysterectomy just prior to turning 30yrs old. 10 years after that.....my endometriosis came back again. I was and OB/Gyne hospital RN, and I was shocked. It certainly isn't unheard of, but I was shocked. 😳Medication treatment resumed and that ended things. It was a very long haul.

      There's no such thing as a Canadian or American accent. It is all regional! Most people from B.C. sound like most west coast Americans, but I guarantee you'd know someone from Quebec wasn't American, or from Georgia or Texas wasn't Canadian. There have to be at least 5 different, distinct accents just in New England, alone!! People really need to stop generalizing everything! It's like saying someone from Liverpool, England has a typical English accent. Or Scottish and Irish accents are typical English because they're in the U.K. And, with his mother being American, and all his trips to America, and encounters with people from all over the world, I'd bet he has a better grasp on languages than the average Aussie.

While it is true that Bindi may have access to resources that many others do not, her illness is not something that should be dismissed just because it's common or because of her background. As you mentioned, endometriosis affects millions of women and is still too often misunderstood and underdiagnosed. Speaking up about it (or what you call whining) can help raise awareness and support for those who are suffering from it, and for that, I applaud both Bindi and Robert for using their platform to advocate for women's health.
