- In the 1920s, during Japanese colonial rule, coal was found in Houtong. The village became a big coal provider in a very short time, with 900 households. But by the 1970s, people started leaving for better opportunities as coal was no longer big news. By the 1990s, coal mining slowed down, and the population dropped to less than 100 in Houtong.
Years later, a local woman who loved cats noticed many stray cats in the village. In 2008, she and other cat lovers started caring for them. Now, there could be around 200 cats in the town, outnumbering the village's human residents :)
