Dr. Larrin Thomas is an awesome metallurgist. You have to read about how MagnaCut was developed on knife nerds. Tim Reeve is a game-changer for Chris Reeve knives and will take his dad's company to the next level.

I was quite pleased when they went from CPM 4V to Magnacut for their fixed blades. I recently got my hands on a Chris Reeves Green Beret in CPM Magnacut and it's so fricken sweet! Theres like a 5 year waiting list on the Green Beret atm which is a long time!

I have many knives but hold Chris Reeve at the very pinnacle of my collection and have multiple versions of almost every folder they offer. The reasons for my favoring of Chris Reeve are as follows - wonderfully nice people - spa treatment so your knives are new forever - the washers are so large, no knife is even close to the solidity - always perfect blade alignment and construction - always perfect lock up - extremely minimalist clean lines - S35 and S45 are not the latest and greatest but are both outstanding in all categories - their blades are thin behind the edge for almost a half inch up the blade which means you can sharpen them for decades and decades (so many knives get very thick and have very limited live span) - I love titanium - they don’t make 800 different styles (I like tradition and really don’t need 42,000 different versions of a knife) - although their knives are almost always sold out, when they drop, you can actually buy one if you act quick - I’m not a fidget person so the action is perfect for me and lastly, these are wonderfully nice people, a small dedicated family that will always be there for you and they are 100% made in the USA. So, I own many knives but I love Chris Reeve and carry my trusty Inkosi every single day (kind of a shame all of my 21’s, 31’s, Umnumzaan’s and Mnandi’s are safe queens but I buy multiple versions to support them and now with Magnacut on the horizon, I can buy every Chris’s Reeve all over again)😊

Love Chris Reeve's Knives! and I love Micarta and have for many-Many years. But I could never buy a micarta inlayed knife from them. Why?
My mentor was the man who popularized Micarta for knives years ago. His name was Loveless. In the shop we were discussing the Loveless favorite ( and Mine), Green Canvases and his #2 Black followed by Burgundy. I remarked that our micartas looked different in patterns. Up until then, nether of us had noticed that the pattern was different if cut 90 deg. different from the sheet. They Bob Loveless and Jim Merit had for many years bought from a company that pre-cut the micarta in strips in one direction only. (Angus-Campbell iirc), while I had been cutting my own. When we compared them side by side, the difference was striking!
This brings me to the way CR does it. It is cut across the end grain at the end of the stick or sheet. Not the flat, but the very end. the is the ugliest, and sadly, weakest way to apply Micarta.
Imagine building a beautiful log cabin, and rather than the log's showing their beautiful grain, or a building built with 4x6's only showing the end grain. Only seeing the ends of log's would be a total let down. It would destroy both the beauty and strength of the building. The only reason I can imagine they would do this is the thin strips of end grain, (Which any other shop would consider scrap, or drop as we call it), is it dead cheap to use rather wasting material by actually cutting out the shapes from the hole sheet or supplied strips. Just cutting the end off of a strip equals very little waste. And it shows as a cost cutting strategy that really cheapens the appearance in what is supposed to be a no hold barred top tier production knife.
It totally cheapens the knife both aesthetically and functionally as well.

Finally a reason to upgrade from my edc large 21 Sebenza.
They have a new finish that’s more pocket friendly and can be done via the spa day service they offer. They have some limitations when it comes to the wood inlays because of the process. Email their CS for more information.
Chances are if they do magnacut it’ll be done properly.

No Maxamet is on the other end of the spectrum in terms of corrosion. Maxamet will patina from hand oils. As Tim was explaining normally the triangle of toughness, corrosion, and edge retention is a scalene triangle and with Magnacut you are getting closer to a equilateral triangle.

Maxamet is nothing like Magnacut. Maxamet takes edge retention to the max (forgive the pun) and sacrifices corrosion resistance and some toughness in that pursuit. It’s EXTREMELY susceptible to corrosion, but is usually run EXTREMELY hard as well..

Maxamet and magnacut are NOTHING SIMILAR. the designs/use profiles are totally different from one another. Maxamet will kill magnacut in edge retention but magnacut will be FAR FAR FAR tougher and of course corrosion resistance. Maxamet was designed for one thing and one thing only and that's to have insane edge retention and edge retention is prioritized over everything else with it.
