    A while back, the fan motor bearing in my condensing unit was going out. A Hvac guy came by and swapped the fan motor out, it was in the fall so it was already 50 60 outside so we didn't use the ac much.
    Now it being summer, i noticed the ac was not blowing as cool as it should have been. Went outside to take a look and the fan was spinning the wrong way! Im used to feeling hot air blow up, but it was blowing out of the condenser coils and against my legs. Two wires in my case made the rotation turn the way its supposed to, now it's cold ac!

When you checked the other two, you checked to ground at the screw at your shoulder. Then you went back to check yellow - and went back to the one at your elbow. You _could_ have been using a good ground for the brown/black, but bad ground for the yellow.

      That is correct. Industrially, when grinding really hard materials, it is common to use a copper or iron wheel, with diamond embedded in it. The hard material grinds away because the softer material holds the abrasive.

      friction is friction, everything eats everything. but you also have to take into account the total contact area(surfaces). a belt clearly has more total contact surface to even the wear, whereas the sheaves have far less and only a small portion is always used. the belts still wear out faster than the sheaves due to material composition, but everything wears!

    one way to trace if you have a bad wire... they might be close enough to test for resistance along the wire... I would have done that as soon as the motor started sounding off and had access to the back. high resistance (especially if 1 in 3) but still a connection would be where the wire is partly broken
    If too far... while knowing they are dead, wire 2 wires together and test at the other end... typically wires don't have much of a resistance, unless a very long run...

    Another great video, Chris, though this time I think you've excelled yourself! I thought the extra details on reading the schematic and explaining how the 3-phase was implemented were really good. The only thing I can think of would be more information about the model you're working on so that I can dig around online after watching one of your videos with a view to downloading information and learning more. I find genuinely find your videos inspiring.
    Regarding pulley alignment, a straight-edge such as an engineering steel rule and a flashlight to check for gaps will enable you to do so precisely without the expense of laser alignment equipment.
    Also, have you considered using a laser pointer to pinpoint or highlight specific things in your video. If you are also using these videos as work records this may be beneficial in terms of accuracy and time saving. It would also have the advantage of being able to show or send a frame of the video to someone and they would see instantly what or where you were referring to.

    ok, the cabinets I worked with had not been so cramped and making whatever was needed in some space available, but I am a huge fan of using those wire guides we had ever since and ad least making an effort to not just bunch up spare cables somewhere in the middle with a zip tie.

    Why do you check power going into the fuses and not just out, couldn't you save some time by just checking the outputs and checking for voltage drop only if the output is low?

      He lives and works in the California desert, and there is a history of the power coming into the bulidings, losing one leg. So he always checks the incoming legs to see if that happened. Checking output, you may get carry over power and send you down a rabbit hole.

      Original comment from 1 hour ago, and a reply to that comment is from 2 hours ago... 👏 Good job, CZcams!
      Best practice is to start with the feed. You don't want to waste time checking everything "south" of the disconnect only to discover the problem is between the breaker panel and the disconnect. As DemonKnight mentioned, there can be capacitive coupling to an otherwise "dead" line. Chris has had videos in the past where units have lost a phase due to building wiring, and videos where the incoming service to the building dropped a phase.

    Is there some kind of alignment jig you can buy or make for the blower motor replacement? If there is such a device, it might be a time not to mention money saver. Just asking.

      Rolling them.off can stretch them out and cause premature failure.... but sometimes you gotta do it

    Freaking carrier drives me crazy man. The fact that they are so prevalent frustrates me. But of all the units I work on, carriers are simple electrical wise. However, I hate accutrol units.

  • @jasonjohnsonHVAC
    @jasonjohnsonHVAC Před rokem +3

    Those Carrier units are junk. Very easy to work on, but notorious for rub outs. Guess i shouldn't complain though....if they did a better job....i wouldn't have as much work 😂. I work on far more Carrier products than anything else ( i understand market share values ). I'd take a Trane over any if the bigger names. Yes no manufacturer makes a fool proof product, and they all have their own quirks.
    Just as a FYI......BROWNING makes a self adjusting bracket that keeps proper tension on the belt at all times....of course nobody wants to buy it....but its available as an option

  • @Adam-ul2px
    @Adam-ul2px Před rokem

    Carrier has some janky ass blower compartments. I started running the blower wiring in liquid tight down on the deck instead of stretching across the housing, on occasion the customer even let's me do this before the factory smoke escapes 😂

    The one thing that seemed odd was that when you measured the voltage at the motor that the "good" legs measured 120V, but they were 208V lines. It was probably best that you replaced all three legs. I'm not sure if the 120V triggered a 120V good brain cell, but it should have read 208V. Maybe i missed something.

    • @HVACRVIDEOS
      @HVACRVIDEOS  Před rokem +5

      John I was testing to ground at that point so. Each leg on a 208 volt service to ground will read 120v

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 Před rokem

      208Y/120V that's the normal result due to phase shift and Wye wiring. 208Volts phase to phase and 120V from any of the three phases to neutral(or ground when properly bonded).
      Delta wiring or higher voltages are a different scenario.
