    For all the broke uni grads just starting out, Value Village is actually a great place to find high quality work basics. They have a ton of brand new or barely worn shirts and blazers from J.Crew and Banana Republic for under 15$. And since a lot of these pieces are classics, they won't even look outdated. I went there when I started my first internship, and bought a whole work wardrobe for $60. ^__^ Just throwing it out there!

    I work in corporate management, and I find that Ann Taylor is the prefect start. I keep going back, and I am obsessed with their ponte-knit slim leg trouser pant; I must have them in approx. 6 colors now. Also I am loving J.Crew blazers and/or sweaters, when they have a "sale", good quality and good deals.

    Hi Elle, this was a helpful video. I'm going to look at those LK Bennet shoes as I could do with a new pair for the office. We have a more business casual attire and a lot of people wear jeans. I personally don't feel comfortable wearing those to work so I stick to black pants or a dress/skirt if I am attending a meeting. Jewellery is a great way to dress up an outfit. Loved your necklace! Would you think about doing a video to show us how to make a necklace ourselves?

  • @vanessagurr8786
    @vanessagurr8786 Před 8 lety

    Thank you Elle, this is a great informational series and it fits a niche. I study law at the University of Toronto and am a budding criminal defense lawyer. I really enjoy watching your videos for inspiration. I think that many women feel some anxiety about how to maintain their personal style and express their creativity while building a career in a legal environment, and I am no exception. I enjoy dressing well, and like you, I consider professional outfits to mean more than owning a single suit; dressing now means composing a broader and more flexible wardrobe out of separate “suiting options”, and it means combining low and high in a way that is both practical and fresh. This is why I asked a question about when (whether) feminine details are appropriate, and how to wear them.Not to be boarish, but I will answer my own question: I think the answer is very context- specific, given that there are so many options out there, and so many types of lawyers, so in practice not all fashion options will be a “hit” with some associates. The plethora of options only makes dressing for work a potentially risky but also very rewarding activity. I think the economics of dressing tends to forces the average woman lawyer to avoid conceptual femininity, but paradoxically, in law as in fashion, there are cultural rewards for conceptional femininity if it is done well because it pushes you above the average, and the way you dress is supposed to reflect your intellectual sensibilities, and capability.
    My question was relevant but probably would have been expressed in a “how to” form rather than “should you” form that is more appropriate for youtube. It wasn’t meant to be a leading question, (crim law joke) although it appears to be! I wanted to say that I really love how you express your style. I really really love the more traditionally "feminine details" especially when contrasted with “masculine” details, and I notice that you combine them in interesting ways that I had never thought to do , and that makes them very wearable for the office. I am excited to see if I can find a way of expressing both my style and my substance in a criminal law context.

    Great, thorough detail ... have you thought of writing a book on this? (would need more fleshing out of what you've covered here or expanding into other topics such as athleisure, dressing for various physiques, etc.) Interesting what you said about NYC & London vs. West Coast. When shopping for a blazer here in Phoenix the salesman told me guys in Miami are more conservative & wear full suits pretty consistently despite the heat (polo shirt & slacks is de rigueur around here).

    Hi again, I am splurging on all your vids lately. This one was really great, in that you focused on top wardrobe pieces for work and you keep it classy. I am very interested and I would love to see more. It's important that you mention cheaper alternatives as a lot of working women have so many responsibilities for their dollars, and the challenge is to purchase well and spend well and to build their closets slowly and with intention. Your vids are a great tool and you have the perfect blend of charisma and knowledge as host. Kudos for taking your passion and sharing it. Honest tips and advice without ego is very refreshing. Keep it up. c xx
