  • Testing and reviewing the new Cycliq Fly 12 Sport. Possibly the best new bike cam for 2023 but arguably over-priced.
    ** There have been a few Comments about long term reliability and customer service. I've brought these to the attention of Cycliq's General Manager and he's now watching the comments. I'm told the Covid related supply chain disruptions hit them hard. They're aware of the damage this caused their brand and are working to change this.**

    Locally plates are only required on the rear of private and small commercial vehicles so having a Varia with camera will only give so much information. The Fly 12 paired with a Varia for road riding would allow one to have a better chance to capture the plate number if needed and the Varia radar gives one a warning if quite electric vehicles are approaching. Something to consider.

    Very helpful video. I might get one these, thank you. Here in SW Florida cars don't have number plates on the front so that might limit the usefulness, I wonder which bright spark thought it might be a good idea not to bother with plates on the front? But then again they don't even have MOT's or any safety checks here so nowt surprises me.

    Excellent video as always. I’ve been using a head cam for my 3 mile commute for the last 10 years. I recently bought a second hand GoPro hero 3 black for £50 from cex to replace my ageing mobius action camera. It took some experimentation to find the best settings to capture number plates at night. I found 1080p 60fps with protune (raw setting) gave reliable results. A slower frame rate gave blurred results. Protune off looked smoother with little noise but number plates were hard to read. However as you said, the battery life is disappointing

    • @alwaysanotheradventure
      @alwaysanotheradventure  Před rokem +1

      Faster frame rates are always best for action, which is why the Fly's advertised 4k is a cheap - 24fps is designed to give blur!

    • @2rocship
      @2rocship Před rokem

      @@alwaysanotheradventure i wonder if going faster than 60fps would be better again? I would have to drop the resolution. I might try it tomorrow 👍. An advantage of the GoPro over the mobius is that it is more visible to drivers behind. I think I have noticed fewer close passes since switching. It must be changing driver’s behaviour

    • @alwaysanotheradventure
      @alwaysanotheradventure  Před rokem +1

      @@2rocship I find when I put a light on my helmet drivers seem to 'behave' more because they think it's a camera. As for the frame rate - most normal video runs at 24 or 25/30fps (EU/USA). So 60fps is 50% slow motion. 120fps is the usual next step and that's real slow motion. The sensor has two problems with increasing the frame rate; firstly it has to react to lower light, because the frames are passing faster, and secondly it has to process significantly (double) the amount of data, then write that data to a card. So even if it can handle the write speed, the image might not be that great due to the light level - that's why at night in this video I was experimenting. You;re right though - the best way is to try it!

    • @2rocship
      @2rocship Před rokem +1

      @@alwaysanotheradventure another thing to consider is field of view. The GoPro has 3 options (wide, medium and narrow). Having a narrow field of view makes the number plates larger and easier to read. However you risk missing the action altogether… Also, I looked at faster frame rates than 60fps. 720p, 120fps and wide fov (only option available) offered no advantage over current settings (1080p, 60fps, medium fov, protune on).

    Interesting to see your opinion. I bought both the 12 and the 6 and had to wait 9 months before they were shipped by the company. It took me a while to get a suitable mount as having g very narrow bars it was a problem to mount. I quite liked the idea of having lights in them to save clutter. What a disappointment the battery with light on flashing has about 3 hours the 6 even less and even without the lights on not much more. Now I’m someone who is out on the bike for more hours than that so pretty poor. I contacted the company and they wanted me to do turn it on in the house and sit with it and record the time it lasted all well and good of you have the time in your life to do so. So basically I haven’t bothered using it at all and shall more than likely sell it as it’s just another bit of faffing about before a ride.
    It may be fine for short commutes but no point for someone who rides distances.

      Agree about the Chillitech, but a comment on here said the new ones were better - don't know. LIkewise the Cycliq - I hear the one I've tested is better but time will tell.

    I needed to see this. I was assaulted a few weeks ago while cycling.
    How long does the battery last is my huge question. ave you found it last that 7 hours on 2K?
    Can you use it on Android??
    How do you film yourself while cycling?

    • @alwaysanotheradventure
      @alwaysanotheradventure  Před 4 měsíci +1

      What an awful experience Mia, I'm sorry to hear that. I'll go through your questions as best I can, with one answer to follow.
      Battery life depends hugely on mode - flash or pulse lasts longer but I can't use flash at night or it does my head in. temperature also makes a big difference. I haven't tested all the combinations of duration, but I can't see many light lasting 7 hours.
      What most riders doing extended routes do is get a light that works while it is charging (not all do such as Exposure Lights). I'm testing this now and it seems the Cycliq. So I wouldn't worry about internal battery life, I'd carry one or more battery packs in a top-tube bag and connect them with a USB cable when on a longer ride.
      There are apps for iOS and Andriod, plus Mac and Windows.
      But unless your assailant happened to be standing right in front of you, this wouldn't capture what happened. I think there are two options.
      Jeremy Vine has an Insta360 X3 mounted on his helmet. This looks utterly ridiculous - like a Mars Bar growing out of your head. But it captures everything within 360 degrees. You link it to the App or Desktop and decide which bit of the footage you want to use/share after the event. I have one of these cameras and I use it on a pole out in-front, but that's just to film me in a creative way. It's not a security feature.
      How I film myself - it's as low school as it looks. I have a GoPro on a small tripod, I line up a shot, I go back, and I ride past the camera. Every. Single. Time. It takes ages! When I want a POV - Point of View shot - I stuff the tripod down the front of my jersey or jacket, with the camera sticking out of the top. It's much faster than using a chest harness, which most people go with.
      If you want to record what's happening to you, rather than the bike, then a helmet or chest mounted camera is the way to go.
      I made a video about how I shoot / structure / edit videos. A few things have changed over the years, but the principles are the same. czcams.com/video/gB1jlSvPWio/video.html
      If anything different comes from my test of the Cycliq I'll add another comment.

      Ran the Cycliq until it dropped a bar of charge, plugged it into the battery pack, and it seems to be recharging while illuminated and recording.

    Easter, I was struck by an inattentive driver that came up from behind and turned into me. The POS left the scene and me lying in the road with 2 fractures in my hip. I had been looking at cameras, but I hadn't pulled the trigger yet. BOY, I wish I had one. A forward, only, camera may or may not have captured their LP. I can see the advantage of one forward and one rear facing camera. JUST not affordable. I like the FLY12.

    I think it’s overpriced at £300. Is it really worth 6 times the price of the Chilli? I have a previous version of the Fly 12 that stopped working after not much use, it’s also a heavy lump of a unit. Techalogic do a similar camera/light that’s only £100 and works with an App. I’m going to get one of those, not this £300 job.

      I'm not arguing with you, just pointing this out; I've heard a few comments like this and brought it up with Cycliq. They realise they had a big problem with both durability and customer service. They SAY they're working hard to change that now. I've been using this camera on just about every ride since I started testing it and it's still working fine.

    Not a big fan of integrating lights with cameras if one fails you lose both or carry the bulk of a dead item. So often they have compromised performance and/or poor battery life to make them as small as possible to attract the weight weenies/ aero advocates.

    I gave up with Cycliq. V1 of the front camera was okay but heavy. It's battery was awful and nowhere near claimed battery life. V2 was lighter but my first unit failed very quickly. Again battery life was well below advertised. The returns process involved sending the unit to an EU warehouse. It took 4 weeks to get my replacement unit which failed again within a couple of months. Battery life was not good. I'd had enough at this point and went back to a GoPro and Lezyne light set up. Both are faultless. Pressing two buttons far outweighs Cycliqs poor reliability and excruciating customer service. They are simply not fit for purpose.

    • @alwaysanotheradventure

      Well that sounds dreadful! I can only speak as I find and it has been great to use, far less fiddly than GoPros (and I've had every GoPro model apart from the 6 and 11). Shocking to hear of bad service though.

    • @Stevenafoe
      @Stevenafoe Před rokem

      @@alwaysanotheradventure not sure why you say the gopro is fiddly; they start recording with one button, stop recording with one button. Video quality is high. The only thing you could say is having to change batteries after 1,5h. Well, i usually have a small stop at long rides anyway, the gopro is reachable when riding (wouldn’t advice to do that btw) , battery door opens with one hand, empty battery out, new one in, press button to start recording en off you go. I have it on a mount attached to the garmin mount. Comes easily off when i want to use it to record the surroundings or whatever you find during a ride..
      I think i’ll prefer buying another gopro (12?) over the cycliq. But honestly, they don’t seem so bad and do the job like you showed here.

      @alwaysanotheradventure  Před rokem +2

      @@Stevenafoe I think you’re right Steven - I got the wrong word here. I was trying to express the fact that on a three hour ride I’d need to carry and change quite a few batteries. I think it can go on looping so probably not cards. I love GoPro cameras and have used every model since the 2, but the ease of use of this Cycliq as a safety camera beats it for this task in my opinion
