I understand in theory that if you're not gonna drive to the lane for the easiest 2 pt attempt you can take, then you might as well shoot a 3. That was basically the reasoning behind teams saying the mid range shot is the worst shot in basketball.
However...basketball wisdom says you take what the defense gives you. Even Golden State kept Shaun Livingston on hand and he was strictly a midrange killer.
That’s what made GSW so lethal but teams didn’t understand…
Heck, even Curry will put the ball down, dance and drive to the hoop. And he's the GOAT 3 point shooter, lol
the problem with players is less that they are not taking any 2s, its more that they are limited by the 3. A lot of the mid range dudes can kill from 3 simply because they can threaten with the 2. Weirdly enough Dallas this playoffs are thriving against the thunder because they lock up the perimeter, and they keep lively and gafford at the rim for layups. The only threat is shai, and he's doing it mostly from the midrange.
It's crazy to hear them talk about Brunson vs earlier the season

I have never played professionally but I've been saying this every since Steph Curry was just shooting threes now everyone comes down and just sit at the three point line I would just kill the paint and midrange when you got a five shooting threes not even in the paint for rebounds
Curry can shoot from anywhere on the court but he's smart enough to go a lot to his midrange and mix it up when his 3pt is not going in...Blame it on players who think they are Steph Curry...

i been saying that since Jordan left the league. See in baseball the one overriding thing.. the thing that changes everything is a simple cut fastball. Mariano Rivera showed you this. You can go in there and throw 9 innings of just 95 percent cut fastball your whole career and you can get outs and win games. The Yankees won 4 titles on the strength of a baseball grip. Similarly basketball is all about the mid range shot. Find you a guy that can find his spot and hit that reliably and you always going to be in the game and you can put in a game winner. Why because that midrange part of the court is what everything else is connected to. Your pick and rolls, lobs, threes .. everything. The midrange is the pendulum point everything else swings from.
The top 3 mvp candidates all operate mainly in the midrange

its simple math... making 1/3 of your 3s is same as making 1/2 of your 2s. so taking 12 3s and making 4 is same as taking 12 2s and making 6.
if you shoot 40% from 3 its like shooting 60% from 2.
now considering that league average is close to 37% from 3 (36% on top and 39% corner) that would be same as shooting 56% from 2.
the only spot where league average is above 56% is the restricted area (4 feet from the rim) = 66%
from the paint (outside of restricted area) league average is 44%
from mid range (between paint and 3) league average is 42%.
that means that shooting 30% from 3 would be more efficient.
now if we look at top 5 mid range shooters by attempts per game
1. derozan 6.9 at 43.0% (33.3% from 3)
2. embiid 6.5 at 48.2% (38.8% from 3)
3. durant 6.5 at 51.8% (41.3% from 3)
4. booker 5.6 at 48.7% (36.4% from 3)
5. ingram 5.4 at 48.3% (35.5% from 3)
none of them were more efficient from mid range than 3. they werent even more efficient from the paint than 3.
the only reason their 2 point fg% is higher and more efficient than 3s at the end is their high fg% in restricted area which proves the point of the analytics: 3 > long 2
