- In 1974, Julia Child visited Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood during episode 1354. In the episode, she showed the children how to practice safe cooking by using one of her own recipes called "Spaghetti Marco Polo." In this interview, David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on the program, shares his memories of Julia Child and her visit on the program. @@connorerhart6038 Which begs the question as to why Ross and Rogers didn't appear on eachother's shows? Bob Ross had his show on PBS and had a child audience too. Ross could've appeared on "Mister Rogers Neighborhood" (and "Sesame Street" for that matter) to show the kids how to paint or finding beauty in nature.

She made cooking unintimidating. She would say “never apologize.” If you think you screwed up, serve if anyway with confidence.
I forgot to screw the cap on the salt shaker, but excessive salt didn't matter, since I confidently served the dish.
But then at the same time, don’t get pissed if ppl let you know it sucks lol
She knew how to turn people on to cooking. Gordon Ramsay and Alton Brown have turned more people off to cooking than anything.

I just ADORE Mr. Rogers. This week I'm going to make spaghetti with walnuts, olives and cheese and I'm going to eat it with chopsticks, and I'm going to raise my wine glass in a toast to Ms. Child and Mr. Rogers! Thank you so much, both of you, for being part of our lives.

I was married in September of 1972 and I became what I always wanted to do; be a stay at home wife so I could cook. I remember being glued to her show every afternoon. She was my teacher, my mentor, my partner in the kitchen. I learned so many details from her and anyone that didn't pay attention deserves the bad food they cooked. The ONLY thing I disliked about her cooking was the wine. I wound up throwing a pan of chicken that I had made with wine. Neither I nor my husband could tolerate it. I never used wine again in cooking. I'm 76 now and I remember Julia fondly. She taught me how to IMPROVE my cooking.
I just rediscovered Julia. You really need to rewatch her show to realize how much influence she had. There isn’t a food network chef that hasn’t been influenced by her. I learned to cook from Alton Brown and America’s Test Kitchen. And I now realize I cook like Julia.

I've been a housewife for 15 years and I'm 34 and honestly, my house would be dull without her recipes. She has taught so much and it's a shame there is no one that touches her in the food world. She is so missed.
And then Fred comes in at the end, gives a quick little lesson (don't be afraid to try different food) and then starts engaging the children watching him by asking them questions. Classic.
Mister Rogers was a beautiful soul. But, it wasn’t just how he engaged children. Children could see that spirit of love around him, and were automatically drawn to him. It was kind of like walking down the street and being engulfed by the smell of fresh baked bread two blocks before you see the bakery.
And as for Julia Childs, you didn’t watch her show just to get a new recipe. It was everything about her that made you want to tune in every week to watch this larger than life 6’+ tall awkward woman with the funny voice & equally funny personality doing what she was loved to do…..COOK! It was always a given that she would burn, scorch, forget to light the oven, forget to grease the cake pan, etc….; and do her damndest to recover from a mistake. America loved her, and loved watching her shows for 35+ years and all of the reruns. She was like the crazy aunt we only bring home for Christmas, Easter, or family funerals as long as she doesn’t bring green jello salad with rancid Miracle Whip topping!

I would have been about 6 years old when this originally aired. I watched a lot of Mister Rogers when I was a child and quite possibly saw this episode way back then. Julia & Fred were two of the best human beings ever to grace the small screen.

Not one of the most famous chef's...THE most famous. I started watching this wonderful lady on PBS in the early 70's . I learned how to cook and developed a passion for food at an early age. She taught me how to cook and I love her for it. I am in my fifties now and just about everything I do now as a cook by "instinct" I learned from her and my Betty Crocker books ;)

Met her briefly on Ocean Avenue in Carmel, CA: she was shopping for a sweater for her hubby Paul & I suggested the Scottish shop; she was very nice and down-to-earth.

I’m pretty sure anyone in the US over the age of 20 knows who Julia Child is.
Unfortunately, that is not the case. I've been a culinary educator for over twenty years and the vast majority of my students have never heard of her (or Careme and Escoffier). That is their first homework assignment. 🙂

Julia Child stopped having her cooking shows in the 80’s. She passed almost 18 yrs ago. It shows how much of an influence she was in cooking, her works and all of media that Gen Z knows who she is.
Might have to go up to 30 by now.
"...anyone in the US over the age of 20 knows..." I teach in a university and I am continually surprised at the lack of knowledge of some of students (the group you are talking about). They may SAY they know who she is, but really they know her by reputation and that is not at all the same. Seeing her parodied and in snips of clips or a fanciful movie does not reveal who she was, but t does show what image people have made her. I will be brave and say my experience is that people can identify here but have never watched even one episodes of her many TV shows that span decades.

The actor did so well with the cadence and tone of his speech that i knew right away who he was meant to be. Great moment
I lost my breath when he said “I like you for who you are”. I had no clue who this was supposed to be until he uttered those words.
Unfortunately, I think that conversation was actually fictional, but it was a nice little Easter egg of the two people who became the faces of public television

So this has been in my Watch Later for about a week or so, and I just finished episode 7 of Julia. The ending made me cry because Mr.Rogers & her met in that scene at such a perfect time. Both such kind and beautiful souls. So it made me want to hurry and watch this 🥰 I also got around to watching the Mr.Roger’s documentary a few weeks ago ☺️

My middle name is Julia after her - my parents were huge fans and they wanted me to have that same empowered, adventurous spirit as her. Then when I was 2, on my way to my grandparent's house, we ran into her at In n Out of all places and it was this strange moment of overwhelming joy. The older I get and the more I learn about her the closer I feel to her.
There was something so real in Fred. It’s not that his kindness was unreal, more like common ideal . I’ve had glimpses into it throughout the better people I’ve known, even a relative. They definitely acquired it in the way they were raised.
This reminds of an old SCTV sketch called Battle Of The PBS Stars where Mr Rogers and Julia Child have a boxing match.
I met Julia Child and she signed my cookbook for my birthday. She showed us how to make garlic ioli and we tasted it! The films name is Julie and Julia about a food blogger and Julia Child.

I remember watching this episode when I was little and if I remember correctly this is the episode where Smokey the Bear visits the Land of Make Believe.

I enjoyed watching with my Nonno..She gave me my love for cooking.. I was 5 years old sitting with my Nonno. He adored her. I would help him make the recipes he choose from her book .
There was so much more to this Beautiful woman.. Her work during WW2 with her husband Paul..

Julia Child was really the proprietor of all cooking shows we see today!
She really set the course for how we view such chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Bobby Flay, Rachael Ray etc.
She certainly was a legendary figure and up until then most families would go out to dinner on most nights and Julia gave us a "taste" of just how fun and more delicious staying home and having a warm home cooked meal from the comfort of our own kitchens could truly be!

I watched first her on PBS on my early 20's. Love her recipes and her funny voice and manners. I am in my 60's and still watch her very frequently.
Talking about teaching children to cook. I was in Japan, in 1994, for business. After work, before going to dinner, I watched a little TV. Unfortunately, I knew very little Japanese but it floored me, when watching a children’s show, it had a cooking segment for children. I realized that the show was teaching very young latchkey kids (children in the segment looked 7 to 8 yo) how to prepare dinner and have it ready for their working parents. When I was 14 yo, I babysat two young girls (8 & 5 yo) after school everyday, whose Mom was a teacher and usually came home by 5-5:30p. Sometimes, she knew she’d be home late and I had instructions for a simple dinner. I can’t imagine them coming home to nobody and making their own dinner.

I remember my mother watching her as a child. I make her 20 second omelette all the time. Sometimes they’re perfect, sometimes half of it ends up on the stove. Doesn’t matter. The part that did make it to the plate is delicious

I got here… HAPPILY… from watching HBOMAX’s “ Julia” series. I saw the episode where an upset teary- eyed Julia is verbally assaulted by THE Betty Friedan… a shero of mine. Fred Rodgers comforted Julia . I couldn’t believe they’d ever really met. But VOILA… here’s proof! YEAH🥳❤️

I loved Julia Childs. My Father could have been her classmate. He went to the same school she did.
The thing I liked about Julia is she made a mess but it was ok. Some of us had very unforgiving parents when it came to making even a small mess and it made cooking something that wasn't fun. I learned how to cook by watching her, and learned to care about myself and others from Mr Rogers. If Bob Ross had dropped by to paint? Phew, get outta here!
Also, I appreciate that Julia made a vegetarian recipe for Mr Rogers. Thats really nice!
