For several years, I did not understand why she won the competition. And for several years, I thought that I knew this ballade and that I was tired of listening to it. But hearing this performance has been and still is mind blowing. This is almost a complete different work from what I knew, this is Chopin like I have never heard it before. I am really happy that she won, she manages to display musical qualities in a unique kind, even among the best Chopin performers.
One of the best known interpretations of this piece IMO
For me, it's the articulation she brings. She has a sparkle to her notes that other pianists don't have. It's so very much her sound that you can recognize from a mile away. She also plays it slower than just about everyone else, letting you really hear how dense this Ballade is, where many pianists try to hide the density. She's enormously technically skilled, but she doesn't make that the focus of her performance. Whether you like or dislike some of her interpretative choices, you have to love that she's bringing her own thing into it, and it could only be Yulianna. She's my favorite pianist around because she always makes you hear something different in a work, and she's got such a recognizable sound.
I agree, and had a similar arc of perception with her
Arnaud, svp allez voir un psi.
@@AshleyPaul Outstanding reply, Ashley...very well said, bravo ~
I think this is the performance that won her the competition title. Stunning and otherworldly.
agreed
In this year the rules were changed ....the winner was pickt only by the Final stage sehe won because of her concerto.......
@@skylar3531 her concerto is still prize worthy
@@skylar3531 The rules were changed only for the 2015 Competition. Cho won by merit of his Concerto. If scores were averaged, CR Hamelin would have won.
In 2010 the scores were averaged, else Wunder would have won (best concerto)
This is one of the most soulful interpretations I have ever heard
This piece reveals a universe of musical expression in just over ten minutes. For me, the most beautiful pieces in the piano repertoire.
After closing your eyes, this Ballade will take you on a journey to a paradise with birds, sparkling water, the scent of the flowers and your thoughts on your loved one. This is how I experience this Ballad. Chopin, how blessed we are that you have lived on this earth..!
Bilal Atabey
Through her performance, I can see and feel a pianist experiencing and expressing the joy, ecstasy, sadness, sorrow, anger and anguish coded into Chopin's notes as emotional and imperfect human-beings instead of robots showing off perfect execution! That's the top level of performance for me!
This is an extremely underrated performance of one of Chopin's finest creations
I wholeheartedly agree! Yulianna is endowed with more talents than strictly pianistic. Her rich personality is multi-dimentional: spiritual, intellectual, deeply emotional, thoroughly sensitive, insightful, high above "normal". Moreover, She is modest and totally engrossed in music.
Yulianna was touched by the Gods. I can't listen to any other version now. Pure poetry.
true
She was touched by God Almighty and by none other.
This is just the best performance of this piece ever recorded. I sincerely think that she is one of the few pianists that Chopin would agree to.
Yulianna is the only pianist that I will listen to play this ballade. Her interpretation is full of energy, power, and sadness. She brings this intensity I haven't really seen in other pianists while still remaining gentle & emotional at the same time. Probably listened to this performance 100 times, she deserved to win.
some parts too quick, f.e. time 9:07
@@peterectasy2957I agree with this critique, but overall this performance was incredible
I love it that she doesn't play at lightning fast speed. She plays at a perfect pace, without too much pedal, and I can hear each note played perfectly. The last part was amazing, perfect. Most performers just play the last part with too much pedal and so fast, that it just becomes a big mess, but this was just beautiful!
I once played the piano and have been consciously listening to music for 60 years. Yulianna is beyond criticism or category. Pure art and pure passion both delicate and and powerful. The world ignored Van Gogh. I hope they do not ignore Yulianna. Thanks to her for the beauty and truth.
YES, we need her to be highlighting orchestra seasons around the globe. I don't understand the current obsession with the flashy performers like Trifonov and Wang.
The more I listen to her the more appreciate her incredible talent.
BINGO!
i cried. tears pouring. that was beautiful beyond words
A re you okay?
I thought Zimmerman had the best version, until I heard Avdeeva’s. Simply magical…
Yulianna touches my soul with this beautiful Chopin piece....beautiful.
Such interpretation of the 4th ballad, heard million of times, known by heart, just takes you ''somewhere else'', far away in her world. Magic !!
This is a wonderful piano performance by Yulianna.....Magnificent!!!!
Chopin is the musical embodiment
of emotion.
She won because of her sonority and temperament.Great old style pianist.Never mind slips and minor mistakes.Makes it all the more exciting.
Yes, totally agree! She has the "old style" perfectly defined. So much style and understanding of the PHYSICALITY of the piano. Always a pleasure to see and hear her performances.
Indeed, totally agree! That's a real performance!
well, I mean, she made mistake in some key parts that completely change the tone of the piece. If there's ever a reason to lose a competition, it's mistakes that completely change the tone of a piece.
won because Chopin
@@jean-francoispayette92 Ridiculous. You are french I suppose ! It's the reason why !
I just keep coming back to this, such an amazing performance and interpretation
Listening closely to the performance, I am astound. Her playing is so graceful, somewhat delicate and, strangely, thoughtful. It's as if she is thinking through the piano in this piece. Beautiful. Brilliant.
Great pianists not only just play, they tell a story
I keep coming back to this version. So beautiful. Especially the contemplative nature of her playing and the differences of the less played Ekier edition.
I have no idea about the Ekier edition, could you give some info like what is the difference and why is it played less
@@ahmetbaturalpmirzabey5141en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopin_National_Edition There you are
For starters, there are tied notes that have become traditional in the 2nd theme that Ekier disposes of. I like it! Ingrid Fliter version also uses this edition.
The best interpretation of the 4th Chopin Ballade. I listened to every second with bated breath. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
I HAVE NEVER HEARD SUCH BEAUTIFUL MUSIC PLAYED BY ANYONE ELSE BEFORE. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE FROM HEAVEN!!!
love the enthusiasm :)
Totally! Yulianna’s performance inspired me a lot and she really sets the bar very high for future chopin winners !
Delightful! I am sure Chopin would enjoy her playing! I am listening to this interpretation of the ballade over and over again and I find it just so lovely!
For people listening to Chopin 200 years ago it was hardcore. Many parts of this ballad sound like jazz interpretations. Chopin was lucky to be ahead of his time by at least 100 years and in some wonderful way he was understood and admired.
You play so beautifully Yulianna! This is a gift to the world.
The very best interpretation of this piece. Next to her autstanding performance may have the Yamaha CFX as their new flagship played a very significant role for this master piece! Thank you! :)
Wow! True perfection! Her polyphonic and rhythmic rendering are both perfect... She has a superior vision of music, which derives from a superior cultural vision. She is not a mechanical machine like many pianists today, but a heart that plays with a superfine technique and a profound knowledge. Brava!
YES. Totally agree. She has the physical and spiritual aspects of the music perfectly envisioned.
"Superior cultural vision" lmao, why do I feel like that was a snide remark towards Asian players...?
@@milton3204 Not really. Lots of Asian players have the correct vision (Yundi, Uchida) whereas lots of Russians don't (Trifonov, Matsuev)
Most musicians today play mechanical but she doesn't. She is an artist whith posonality. Right?
6:31 is such a beautiful and amazing transition to the introduction once again on a different key. It's so beautiful!
@3:28 the melodic balancing here is INSANE
yes it’s really hard to do correctly
Simply beautiful. An exquisite rendition of the 4th ballad. Full of emotion, not slow and not rushed, the voices can be heard so clearly. I haven't heard many interpretations of this piece, but I think I need not look any further.
Her left hands' tone is very beautiful..
I know right! Especially at 8:15
It breaks interpretive paradigms of Chopin's work. Sometimes it decontextualizes, other times it plunges into an absurd intimacy with the author, other times it brings certain passages to the contemporary. The result of this is something completely new and surprising resulting from alternating perceptions that we have recorded about the work.
She played so well. Her beautiful sound matched the song so well. Her musicality is one of the best in the world. And the last Koda performance was really great. That was the best Koda I've ever heard.
I think Nikolai Lugansky’s coda is better
I like her sincerity
Her legato flows like honey. So. Smooth.
Extremely balanced and coherent redemption, exquisite inner voices. Remarkable from 8:51 on
Absolutely spellbinding performance. A worthy winner indeed. Edit. Like others here, I just keep coming back to Yuliana's performance. 💚
I appreciate her interpretation, regardless of some negative comments. No interpretations are identical.
Her near-perfect playing brings attention to sounds and volumes never heard before in any other performance of this Ballade
Yulianna's performances are not 'interpretations' - they are creations and discoveries! There is tremendous spiritual, emotional and physical power in them.
What a wonderful and mature performance.
I’ve probably listened to 50 different recordings of this piece but I always return to this one by far the most.
Ladies and Gents, just a quick reminder for when you compare different recordings: some audios are MORE COMPRESSED than others. This means they will have a slightly brighter tone, a bit more pressure, a different color that might strike as being the result of the interpreter's technique and sound alone. Needless to say that each performer has his/her own sound, but when it comes down to youtube recordings the level of compression vary A LOT.
BTW, her interpretation of this piece is simply amazing. Certainly one of the highlights of the competition.
The best interpretation and performance i have found on yt. Excellence
She is a fantastic artist, singing each note and each frase by heart and with the most intense and inspired expression that only very few artist can do. Love your playing Yulianna! ❤
Very precise and very delicate touch, a joy to listen to!
Bravissima Yulianna, intensa e commovente, bellissima magia, sei stata eccezionale. Grazie. GRAZIE
Still coming back to this interpretation… simply perfect
Gv 5 ).....
Amazing no words 😮
Love this girl and love Chopin. Tried to learn the peace.... very difficult but I could play it at a slower pace. Spent hours learning it.... and loved the experience. Very talented Yulianna Avdeeva!!! U should have 1 billion followers.
Same lol. I’ve performed it but at 80% tempo😅
Human life described in 10 minutes.
Probably one of the best performances of the ballade (excluding Zimerman of course)
A very beautiful master piece from master Chopin. I very much like the clarity of her playing, the silence underlying all movement. I would not call it sadness, but an expression of melancholy, of "heimweh", the voice of a transcendental value.
Wreszcie normalna jakość dźwięku! :)
Che interpretazione! Mi è arrivata nelle ossa
Still absolutely amazing
There is just so much satisfying space in the music amidst all of the technicians out there who have to play everything fast and condensed as if on a mission to impress. I have to imagine that Chopin played it this way...
That rubato, that expression, perfect tempo 👌
What a beautiful performance!!! I’m really impressed.
Amazing..
Thank you for giving me your beautiful beautiful music.
I love this performance. Most other times I've watched/listened to this ballade, it seems like the best parts of the song are rushed through or there is not enough clarity. But here you can hear it all
Beautiful performance
Loved it.
I love her expressions so much
The one gentleman in back, softly clapping. I wouldn't be able to keep quiet either after that performance!
Bravo !
Really expressive interpretation!
A fairy tale told by a great piano talent,
impersonation of the Chopin image ...
Quase que imensurável a excepcionalidade dessa interpretação!
Bravo!! Spellbinding!
Wonderful!
What a well conceptualised interpretation, very refreshing and fantastically paced.
6.32-7.07 one of the most beautiful of passages beautifully played
Perfect
Espectacular ❤❤❤
WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL. !!!
Incredible.
Uma maravilha!
Favolosa interpretazione
The best interpretation I've ever listened.
The last two minutes is some of the most passionate piano playing I've ever heard
funny
Amazing
Marvelous
her playing is so novel, full of unpredictability, nuances...
amazing!!!!
1st time I hear this utube recording but It's so amazing!
splendid!
awesome!
To me just a perfect playing, with lots of drawn back emotions so that the real meaning of this Ballade can come in focus. Her gentle touch brings a lot of understanding to this piece of music.
Best interpretation I have ever heard
