- I've been watching a few uploads of Billy Joel playing live in the late 70s/early 80s, and the level of his vocal talent & skill, along with how he made everything look so easy, just blows me away. Billy in his prime was the ultimate triple threat - a great singer, a great player, and - perhaps most importantly - a great writer, whose fame & drawing power remain undiminished more than 30 years after his final album. Billy wrote both music & words to almost all his songs without a collaborator, and he noted that the strain of the lyric writing may have been a factor in ending his creative career relatively early. Honesty (from 1978's 52nd Street album), with its hard-hitting lyrics, is perhaps his best-known ballad. My parents had the album and i listened to it over & over, fascinated with how Billy seemed to be using 2 completely different voices (in those days, obviously, buying the vinyl album was the only way to get dependable access to music). At one point or another i have played more than 20 different Billy Joel songs, but i'm a bit reticent to post them, as Billy's fans expect a lot of cover versions, and rightly so. No commercial use.
