Using a home made rubber powered crossbow is better... enough power, much quicker cocking without an awkward pulley aid system, no ammo problems, and much more compact too :)
You sir, are my favourite youtuber, and posting a great comment on my birthday
They should try one of you braineslicer arrows!
If that is so Joerg, then Daryl Dixon could learn a thing or two from you. Besides I'd love to see you in a Walking Dead episode! =D
Joerg, you should let them use your car sized slingshot if you can transport it, or if they go to you, using that on one of these heads would be carnage! :D
The STRYKER 350 with scope is light deadly. Shoots 350 fps .
VERY ;LIGHT CAN LOAD IT WITH 2 HANDS EASY .
''Easy to carry when you have to stab your own brother''
Don't....Don't ever bring that up again.
Than now it's time for Mama. Go home and cry for mama
Well there's something I want
That Stryker 380 is SWEET!! Good Job with this video!!
Im pretty sure Daryl being the uber wise hunter, would know to dail it down to say 2/3 or even 1/2 wieght so he could still kill and recover the bolts. You guys should try that for a follow up video with the weight down. Great vids, a few more like this one and im subbing. Thank you
When that group of guys found Daryl in the road the leader said something about his crossbow being super powerful
fireing a bolt with out a tip is pointless.....ok im leaving now
Ahahahahaaaa that was punny!
you fucking legend :D
hahaha :D
I get the joke, but just in case it wasn't, it still went strait through
Grayson Brown it’s a joke read it again
Haha Damn that was hell powerful. Wasn't expecting the non-tip version to go clean through the skull! Gnarly
I do dearly love the fact that they do not put advertisements on their videos, but instead rely on the support of their fans to purchase, what actually are, really cool products.
i think its worth asking, since crossbows are unique to guns in the fact you can craft your own bolts, could you make a video with crafted bolts to see if they would kill a zombie, as in the Apocalypse you may have to use them
you can make your own rounds for "guns" to you know... In fact more people are hand loading know than they have ever done before.
But i think if you'd use a wooden bolt for this crossbow, it would just splatter in 1000 pieces. 110 lbs might be a good way ;)
yeah i guess your right there liam, 3d printing bullets and guns are possible, but its still not something available to everyone and it britain where more strict gun laws are in place, whereas anyone with a knife could fletch a bolt, good point gimli, still worth a shot though :P
Of course man :D
using homemade ARROWS in a crossbow is a recipe for disaster. No one who knows anything about archery would attempt to fire one in a modern compound bow or crossbow
Can you guys test a 50lb recurve bow? Something simple people have who are interested in archery. Something showing the limits of poundage to enter the skull would be interesting, is it 30lb or 50lb or 60lb? Would be interesting to know.
Also as others have mentioned you can dial down the draw weights on most crossbows/compound bows. This would explain Daryl being able to draw the crossbow easily and explain why his arrows wouldn't go straight through the skull.
Give it a revisit I think.
That makes me think that maybe the best crossbow for the zombie apocalipse was the Horton scout since it weights less and has less drawback and work to put arrows, etc... So basically The Stryker is good for hunting animals and the horton scout had a better use for zombie kills
Arrow tips are designed to make a clean cut,so if your in a normal surcamstance with deer you can eat all of the animal without eating parts of it.
why dont you try lining up two zombies and killing them both with one shot
Excellent stuff ! I have the Ghost 410 and damaged one of my bolts experimenting. So i glued a ball bearing to it and fired it at a 2" thick kitchen worktop offcut. Made a neat little 10 mill hole at the front , and the mother of all damage at the back. :)
You look like Johnny Depp in this video...
Daryl dixion best character
who are u talking about
daryl is the best by far there must be something wrong with you
Amy daniels yea by the tyme i was typing that comment i was somewhere around season 1.
oh ok
lennard de jong
Feels cool owning his crossbows i got tjr horton 125 and Stryker 380 optifade crossbows just 1 more to go!!! :)
How about a regular bow, man? Not everyone can get Daryl's stuff, but almost anyone can get a cheap long bow or smaller recurve bow. I'm interested to see what's going on with the PVC bows you said you guys are making. A good PVC bow with maybe 60-70 pounds of draw weight should work nicely, don't you think?
I've been making PVC bow for about 2 years now, and I can tell you that you cannot make a 60-70 pound bow out of PVC pipe the way they do it, it's highly unstable and risks to break. You'd need to flatten the limbs progressively and that much harder to do that what we've seen here. Also, I'm pretty sure a 50 pound bow is more than enough for a head, since I use a 40 pound for small game/target practice.
Honestly, I don't need them to test a bow, if it kills an animal such as a deer or pig, then it'll kill a zombie. There's virtually no difference between a deer/pig skull and a human's. And it's actually a better test, because it's a living thing, therefore we know there are no flaws in the skin, no changes as to how hard the eye sockets are and provides the support for the skull that a human/zombie would have, which is almost impossible for man to replicate.
The bow and arrow was previously tested, look up the episode the results are pretty sick!
That was the compound bow, not recurve or long bow, and they used the old head not the new Ivan heads.
Max Meilleur I know for a fact that you can make 60-70 pound PCV bows with no problems. I've done it and have seen others do it.
Guys u do also have to keep this in mind while watching this. Although some weapons may not be as effective on the ivan heads, in the zombie apocalypse, the zombies do gradually start decaying, making them weaker and easier to kill.
That was impressive, great video guys!
You wouldn't want a compound crossbow. If you need to change the string, you'd need to bring it to a shop.
the music makes its hard to take this shit serious.
they're fucking up fake zombie heads... not sure "serious" is something they're totally going for.
The ability to reuse the bolt depends on a couple factors. One would have to do with the bolt itself, if the shaft of the bolt is made of carbon there is a good chance that the entire thing will splinter, but if the shaft is made of aluminum the bolt won't break as easily. Using an aluminum bolt, all you would really need to do is change the knock and maybe glue on new fletchings.
what i would be curious to see is a medieval crossbow, that was the AK47 of the medieval time, transforming any soldier or even peasant into potential snipers, there were low strength that were as strong as the average bow, but easier to use by untrained person and can be keep corked and ready for action for as long as you need, and with today technology we could make them so easily in our garage with little to no tools
Regardless of the period or materials, it's poundage that matters, lower poundage means less force behind the bolt or arrow, means higher chance of recovery and quicker reload, also, the crossbow did not make a sniper of a peasant, certainly a peasant could train and become quite proficient ala William Tell in a shorter amount of time than a bow, but here's the thing, he was only 50 paces or feet away from his son when he made that shot according to the story, and at the time that was considered a very difficult shot. So snipers, crossbowmen were not. Additionally I think it would be damn near impossible to find a working replica crossbow with bolts for the show without spending a wad of cash, you'd honestly be better off using a lower poundage crossbow, like so many of those sport crossbows you find at Walmart, seeing as it's poundage that makes the bow and crossbow.
KageRyuuUji as said before i said "potential" sniper,
at that time it was easier (but still hard) to learn how to shot a crossbow, but much safer than learn how to use a sword and also less expensive, like that it was easier for them to get weapons and be outside of the range of bandit, or even corrupted knight
in a apocalypse scenario it would be easier to make and forge bolt than bullets, we survived thousand of years with bow, and hundreds of years with crossbow before seeing a single firearm , and even little more before firearm actually become efficient
so i still believe it is a strong viable option.
You guys need to test specialized Zoombie bolts, designed for maximizing Zoombie head-shot damage and recover-ability (should stick in head, and be reusable with little or no manual adjustment). Aluminum or carbon shafts are no good, they can't be bent back to straight, same goes for any tubular shaft (it will kink) ... Consider a solid titanium shaft, with blunt large steel tip. These arrows could be straightened after recovery, would produce more head damage, and stick in the head. For a close range head sticker shot, a light weight arrow isn't necessary, but re-using your arrows is ESSENTIAL for survival ... don't prep with hunting bolts, you won't last through the 2nd wave!
While not a bad idea unrealistic and expensive if prepping. This crossbow is overkill. The only sure fire way to keep ammo in supply would be to craft your own bolts from nature. And the risk of shattering a natural bolt upon release would be very high risking injury to the user. Shooting at such close range a cheaper less advanced cross bow would do the job and make bolts more salvageable but would sacrifice accuracy and penetration at distances. Its unrealistic to think anything other than wooden/river cane/bamboo bolts are going to be readily available during a WROL situation.
You guys really need to test a large butcher's cleaver.
Okay there's two factors you guys at ZGB you need to consider about Daryl 1. His spent all his life doing Manual labor building up Natural muscle Hauling wood dragging deer Etc and Getting calluses on his hands he's more than likely Capable of pulling back on the crossbow 2. Crossbow draw back strength can be tone down for drawing the string back more easily
Hi ZGB, love the videos!
What I would really love to see used is one of these PVC bows you can make for $10 or less. They seem powerful, especially with those carbon fibre rods in them.....This would really make my day, and would be something we could all make during end times. Thank you
sundays are the best go to church, come home, and watch a new episode of zombie go boom!
You guys really need a back stop. your taking a HUGE mistake shooting a 380 with out a stop and not knowing what's behind the fence
I was thinking the same thing. That's not safe at all.
My grandpa still uses the same 3 bolts included with his x-bow, he has only replaced a few feathers. Bolts don't get messed up very easily
Perhaps 160 lbs of draw weight is overkill for killing a zombie. Would 120 lbs of draw weight be sufficient without causing the arrows to break? How about 80 lbs? 40 lbs?
I know that the minimum for a hunting cross bow is something like 45 or 55 pounds. I'm sure anything around there would give pretty good results.
nah, 40lbs is for pussies. 90lbs up if you wanna get a sure kill.
120 and 80 will kill a zombie however, 40 lbs normally will not yet you can buy titanium bolts that have tungsten carbide alloy tips that will go through a helmet and a head and out the other side with 80 lbs and are reusable, without a helmet it will also go through a skull with 40lbs, these bolts cost over £100 ($135) each so if you were going to be target shooting or having it for hunting then you want a hunting crossbow get at least 70lbs because otherwise I find that rabbits jump out of the way.
Kinetic Fury
Pretty much, though my question is can arrows fired from a wooden bow with a 45 lb draw string penetrate a zombie's skull?
ShadowWolfTJC Yes, it can. A 45 pound bow can definitely kill a zombie.
that was fucking amazing! with the benefit of not making as much noise as a gun and the sheer power of that thing, it should be on top of everybody's list.
I feel like mtv made this.
As someone who owns 400fps crossbow with a variety of bolts, tips, broadheads, etc... yeah, Daryl would have a hard time using one in the zombie apocalypse. VERY effective but retrieving bolts wouldn't be so easy. Ideally you wouldn't use broadheads because you'd just bend or break off blades every time they came into contact with thick bone like a skull plate...so you'd just use a bullet point style field tip...but even then, a bolt would penetrate and easily pass through a zombie's decaying head and the chances of being able to find your bolt again in the midst of a zombie killing spree would be remote. If you saw where it went and had time to go look for it, you could probably recover it....but not always.
In the show, you constantly see Daryl walking up to zombies and pulling the bolt back out because it didn't pass through. With a modern crossbow shooting 350+ fps...you're gonna get a pass-through every time. Not only that but the bolts would take a beating. Once they develop any kind of chip or crack, you might as well toss it because a damaged bolt can shatter when fired. You'd also lose a lot of vanes(plastic feathers)when a bolt goes through a zombie's head. They're only held on by epoxy and once a bolt loses a vane or two, it's accuracy is pretty much gone. A bolt with no vanes on it at all will fly better than a bolt that's lost a vane, for example.
So yeah, there's a lot of things that would get in the way of actually using a crossbow in the zombie apocalypse. It would still be an incredibly handy weapon and you'd use it just like Daryl does in the show, but you would be going through bolts more regularly than Daryl does on the show. You'd need a large stockpile of bolts, and components to rebuild them if you had to. You'd need some type of glue or epoxy. You'd need some type of lubrication for the rail on the crossbow, otherwise you'll wear the string out until it eventually fails. The rail on a crossbow needs to be lubricated after half a dozen shots or so, usually. You'd need extra vanes. Maybe even a jig so you could probably line the new vanes up to the shaft properly. You'd need spare tips too. If you were just gonna use the crossbow within close range, like 15 yards and in...you wouldn't need to worry so much about accuracy though as a zombie head at that range is still a fairly big target to hit.
They should of added a rate of fire test, or match it up against the compound bow the hillbilly used.
That episode didn't exist when they did this test. lol.
The compound bow was used in season two, by the chick on the wall at Wood-bury? A Compound bow would Win for sure in rate of fire/range and I'd say it would draw with the crossbow in accuracy at or under 30ms. If you used (Easton) N-Fused Carbon and Aluminum Arrow with Tusker Broad-head you would get kills and wouldn't break arrows.
oh wow, i completely forgot about that. you said hillbilly though so i assumed you were talking about the guy from the recent episodes. don't know how hillbilly that girl from wood-bury was haha. but was that a compound or some kind of long bow? i can't remember
I'm pretty sure it was a compound could be wrong an I did mean the hillbilly from one of the latest episodes. But was just pointing out it had been used before in the series.
That is why you make your own bolts. That is what makes bows and crossbows so useful in basic survival skills.
You can make them out of almost anything and making arrows and bolts that only need to fly 40-50 yards. They do not require too much durability.
160 pounds are more than enough to bend a bolt made of wood, it can break and hurt you.
watch?v=WzWrcpzuAp8
Have you ever tried making a bolt or an arrow? because I can guarantee you that getting straight shaft is unbelievably hard. Then if you decide to go with an arrow and add fletchings it gets harder because first you can't just use any feather you need to you the same half of feathers from the same side of one bird. Now try attaching them and a worth while point. Why use a point instead of just sharpening the stick? The stick will dull quickly and need resharpening and pretty soon the bolt or arrow you spent so long working on and sizing to your bow or crossbow is to short and you need to star all over again. Plus you need to then worry about the archers paradox. As MacTavish said a strong bow can easily break a week arrow and put the shaft straight into your forearm. Now keep in mind how long 40-50 yards is, most gunfight happen within this range. Now with a bolt or arrow you have much more drop to compensate for as they are a lot heavier than a bullet. Now keeping all this in mind how difficult do you think it would be to make a new arrow or bolt assuming you have enough skill with your weapon to use it effectively?
MacTavish002 Keep in mind that this is a modern compound cross bow and 160 pounds of draw weight could equate to 200 pounds of force in the bolt although I usually stick with traditional bows so I'm not quite sure how much it ups the power. On an unrelated note you see Daryl drawing the crossbow back while it is raised and one handed. I can guarantee you that no one alive can do that as it is hard enough to draw back a crossbow one handed so that it will clip into place but the 160 pounds is just that much more difficult. You even see the zgb team using a winch to draw it in this video because of it.
River Carson 9 inch nails work if you cut off the end and add some groves...with a good crossbow you could hit form 10-20ms away and kill it
No it won't unless you have something on the nail guiding it the whole way it is likely to fling up or to the side. Arrows and bolts are sized to the bow for a reason.
Like in skyrim, you can occasionally salvage arrow
this episode is further proof that daryl probably dropped the draw weight significantly. it would be interesting to see you guys drop the weight and try this again and only stop dropping it when the bolt no longer flies straight through the skull. and once you've found that sweet spot where it still kills but inst ruined you should redo the other episode you did when you said he wouldn't be able to draw it by hand.
You guys should really use a proper backstop especially with broadheads
Agreed.
firing that bolt with no tip is the quickest way to fuck up a crossbow
I have seen darryl Dixon recocking his crossbow and he does it very quickly which suggests his draw weight is much much lower than the 165lb yours is set at and darryls bolts never seem to go completely through again suggesting the lower draw weight.
Crossbows are impractical due to slow reloading times, better off with a recurve bow!
Loving your videos, I was born in the wrong country!!!
One that is just in the show and two you spelt Daryl wrong
Something that I have noticed with my crossbow using field tips at 50 yards even with damaged fletchings (Fletchings that have passed through a 4" cardboard backstop and were stretched and torn.) The bolt was still fairly accurate to within a few inches. After passing through the skull even with a field point the arrow should loose some velocity. If you are not swamped with Z's you could possibly locate the bolt with some time. But I wouldn't use the Crossbow in a Z swarm anyway due to rate of fire. Adding a Luminok to the bolt may increase the odds of a quick recovery. Awesome Video Keep them coming.
Lol can't reuse the bolt cus it landed to far away I can't walk 30 feet away to go get it
In the walking dead Daryls bow is switched with a ruber band so it shoots only like 3 feet
There's something wrong with this show: the Ivan heads are anatomically incorrect, the weak spots such as as eyes and mouth are hard just like the skull, so I feel before you say that it's fake, improve the dummies. Love the show though, keep it up :D
Dude, the brain is surrounded by the skull FROM EVERY ANGLE(!!!!!!). Even behind the eye there is bone (granted, there is a hole for the optical nerve, but it's way too tiny to be relevant), as well as behind your mouth. Also keep in mind bone is a couple time harder than CEMENT.
Their dummies are fine
I think the biggest problem with the test was the cramped space, I mean of course a 160 lb draw weight crossbow will go through a head at like 10 yards.(if even that much) A crossbow that powerful isn't a close range weapon, you could probably salvage more than half your bolts if you shot from an appropriate range. The reason the headless bolt did the best was because it had no penetration, so it slowed down the most after going through the head, hence it didn't smash to pieces on the fence.
2:11 so, Walking dead is FAKE. :)
Daryl usually fire his bow under 5 meters but the bolt always just stuck in zombie's head lol. Apparently real one is more powerful. ;)
Just because there are real humain under zombie makeup, no one will be shoot by thy Stryker x)
iPlatiinyum Haha, true. ^^
bubblefish17 yes they are,i had one 185lb draw and it could easily go all the way through a human torso
Darrel uses the Horton summit HD 175 in the first seasons which is a cheap 300$ bow that I love
codylucente actually it's a Horton scout HD 125 which they don't make/sell anymore
codylucente Horton scout hd 125*
Probably a crossbow with less power and speed (like the Jaguars with 120lbs or 150lbs with 210 m/s) would do a better job. That's why:
1. With less power, the bolts won't break so easily and you can recycle them.
2. The cocking is faster and less tougher, you'll save stamina for another things.
3. The mechanics are simple - a recurve crossbow doesn't have a lot of parts as compound crossbows have, so it's better for a surviving situation.
4. These crossbows still can be a real danger for example they can take out deers at 30 yards without problem.
So my choice for a zombie apocalypse would be a Jaguar 150lbs crossbow.
Enough strength to kill zombies, ammunition recycling, less mechanics complications and it's easy to carry.
i would have the cobra 80lbs self cocking crossbow pistol because with a little modding it can go over 195 fps and have 7 shots
TheGaming Predator
I bought the cobra pistol crossbow and yeah, it's a real good choice
Do u know how much is 200 m per sec is its 600. Fps you are totaly lier the fastest crossbow in market only shoot at 400 more or less fps
Faldi Calvin Wijiono umm i said 195 FPS not meters
I am not talking to gaming predator im talking to felipe
Loved the episode and the one thing that really surprised me was you shot a bolt without the head. The result I'm not surprised by because me and my friend have actually done that. We've tool it a step further and just wanted to see what would happen if we fired just the tip and let me tell you that shot of like a bullet. Granted but we were using were plastic bolts but the result was spot on to your test. Great job. Thank you.
You'll fuck the bow up shooting it without tips....
Gareth Hughes idiots
Jordan Mansell No tips fuck the bow up? I know dry-firing is bad, but no tips? Please explain, i am no bowman. Unless its something simple like the bolt ending up too shirt to fit in the channel properly, and instead of ahooting out it jams into the front of the biw.
The arrow heads balance and strengthen the shaft so it doesn't ricochet, it is essentially dry firing.
This channel is full of idiots. They have no clue what the fuck they are talking about
Anyone else notice he has the wrong size field point on the arrow? Lol its way too small.
Entertaining video, but lets understand first that any bow, recurve, longbow, compound bow, compound crossbow or a recurve crossbow is NEVER designed or meant to be shot with an arrow WITHOUT a field point or broadhead. The reason for this is that the arrow alone without a tip does not in almost 99% of the time contain enough mass weight for the bow intended. So you are in a sense DRY FIRING your weapon and thus putting excessive force on the cables and strings which could cause your bow to blow its cables and string. The arrows are typically specked out to achieve a certain FPS ( feet per second ) in conjunction with a field tip or broadhead.. So to shoot an arrow without a tip reduces the mass weight of the arrow by minimally 100 grains.. Also keep in mind that the field point/ broadhead gives the arrow dynamic spine ( flex-stability ) when it is fired and influences the flight path. An arrow shot without a tip will launch wildly because it has no nose weight, thus lacking direction and can fly extremely off course... Which is incredibly irresponsible and dangerous and to suggest to your viewers that it can be done is just crazy and BEYOND UNSAFE!!!!!! And to even mildly think that a pine picket fence is a suitable backstop for a crossbow bolt is just plain naive... Be Safe and do a bit of research on the weapon of choice and its potential power before demonstrating how to use it. I'm not ragging on you guys but the young and inexperienced might try to duplicate things they see and the next thing you know the cops are knocking on the door because the crossbow bolt is, at best, lodged into the side of a neighbors house....... ALWAYS SAFETY FIRST.......
And to address one comment about not having a nock..... Well all crossbow bolts use nocks on the backs of the arrows. There are flat nock, moon nocks and capture nocks... They all plug into the back of the bolt. and that is what the string contacts when you pull the trigger. If there was no nock in the back of the shaft, the string would either split the back of the shaft or jump over the back of the shaft. Either scenario is a diaster and results in a repair cost.....
I was scrolling through the comments to find a fellow bow man to catch that...it took me a minute
I lost faith in humanity a zombie invasion ._.
Well, you never know. Do you think people all the way back in 14th century Europe could have predicted something like the bubonic plague? Or us just a few years ago with swine flu? I know a zombie outbreak would probably be more complex than that, and we do have advanced medicines since then, but, keep in mind, mother nature always finds a way. We just never know what she's finding a way for next :I
johnnymccraze If there is gonna be zombies I think it would be a fungus or protozoa
Zeivon Bradshaw Exactly. Zombies don''t have to be 'Radiation' or 'Voodoo'. They can be made from perfectly natural, realistic causes that can alter the brain and, in time, the host to become violent, cannibalistic, infectious, etc.
matt jordan YES! That is exactly what I mean! Just because something hasn't affected humans yet doesn't mean it WON'T, PERIOD. All it takes is a little leap in the genetics and WHAM. Zombies are at full possibility.
See what i mean...
If i ever had a crossbow i would mount a knife on the bottom to give me more time to react if i already shot my arrow. Plus, the knife would have good distance.
Make Lucille and try it on an Ivan.
From the comics Glenn is the one who gets his head destroyed
They did
They just tried it, I'm not stupid.
+Dylan Hutto never said you were
they have and they'v done a walking dead katana
It's not weird at all that the hollow point does more damage, it makes complete sense. hollow point allows more damage to be done because the energy transferred to the zombies head is greater due to the larger surface area of the bolt head. The same concept has been applied to bullets, which is why some bullets are made with hollow points, and others are designed to flatted on impact. More surface area=more energy transferal=more damage.
you try the army's crossbow the PSE TAC 15
They best tip for zombie killing is a tip that would be used to kill small critters, the impact tips. They wont penetrate very far, so you wont have to worry about losing you arrow, and they will do enough damage to score a kill.
He actually uses a Horton scout 125
Guess you haven't finished season 3 or watched any of season 4
I was going to say the same thing. You beat me bro.
Yeah but his new crossbow is the bow tech Stryker 380
That prob broke in a blooper. He now uses the one in this video
Wat no he got a new one in the show. When they got a shit ton of weaps from that crash guy rick picked it from his loot
i wish they would put those gauntlets on the store
Compound bows!
U can salvage your bolts it's called take a Allen wrench and loosening the tension on the limbs so it perfectly sticks right in the skull
How do u do that?
You can't do that.
+beaker007j yes you can I have a tenpoint I have experimented with it
+beaker007j how the fuck are you going to tell me you can't? What part of I've done it don't you understand? Haha I understand every bow is different but it works with MY bow, I've hunted with my limbs loosened a tad bit and it works
You can't on a Stryker strykezone. Do your homework next time kid.
Doubt that girl holding the crossbow can pull that string back
Grayson Brown not that girl
girls are weak AF
Awesome shots! , love the power the bow is putting out
Old videos were better...
Major downside of the Stryker is that it's a compound crossbow. If you have a string or limb failure, there's no restringing it without a proper bow press. Check out the company Excalibur Crossbows. They make classic recurve crossbows with removable limbs. Excaliburs can be restrung on the field with minimal tools. Apologies for the long post hahaha, been into archery and survivalism for a long time.
thanks for the fucking spoiler...
It's just a new crossbow, it's not like major characters dying or anything!
He got it back in season 3, your a little late on this
Nate Witecki She told us that he stabbed Merle...
Zombie vs medieval crossbow would look fun
It's so cool the first hit is for a fresh walker than the last hit is trying to hit a walker that has been around a lot because it is more decayed/damaged/fell apart sorta
***** You didn't take into account lowering the draw pressure… if you lowered the draw pressure or rather "fine tuned it", you would be able to stabilize how far into the skull the bolt will go. That way if your using broad heads or practice tips the bolt will only go in deep enough to reach an effective kill without rendering the bolt ineffective (there are some cases where the bolt may break but that's bound to happen either way)…So I dont find this to be a "true test"
Thus proving that bullets, blunt, or blades are always the best way to go.
Glad to hear there's a cow field on the other side of that fence. It's not much of a backstop if you're their next door neighbor.
1. If you look at the show, the actor who plays Daryl has to pull up the string of the crossbow which is a real crossbow but the drawweight is lowered so he can pull it up, you had to use a string, try pulling that up without it
I own this bow, you just have to be strong to use it without the mechanical assist.
I guess I have to cross off this crossbow from my zombie apocalypse survival tools
With the broad head, not saying it was re-usable but the zombie head didn't break the bolt, the fence did, the momentum that it was going at was crazy, that probably could have easily gone through another Ivan head, love ZGB, keep up the good work :)
The fletching broke off in the zombie's head. So you're wrong. The zombie's head did break it.
BigBoss001001 nope came out clean broke on fence
BigBoss001001 only thing come off was feather thing
"I may be the one walking away... but you're still the one who's leaving!"
With no broadhead you can do more damage to one zombie. and with broadhead you can make a double or triple kill because its comes with more speed out of the back of the head
One thing you didn't factor in is that it hit on the side of the skull when you shot the bolt with no head. The problem with that is that if you would have hit it dead on the fletching would probably have a good chance at coming off, thus causing it not to be usable again.
Guys these guys are professionals they beat up zombie dummys in their backyards tots ligit
Even after I've seen a crossbow in action, I still would prefer a rifle or submachine gun only because you have one shot until you have to reload and, depending on how many arrows you have, have to go back and get your arrow you shot. Not very effective if your dealing with a whole crowd of zombies....which is more realistic because zombies like to stick together.
They forgot to factor in that the bolts are going at over 250 mile per hour and hitting the fence at almost full speed. If there was nothing behind the zombie for, say, 100 feet I'm quite sure you'd be able to salvage it.
I'd say one of the better parts of the Crossbow/Bow is not the possibility of reusable ammo (Though this is a much more likely possibility on a bow), the main advantage is that it's relatively easy to make the arrows/bolts for the weapons. Where as a gun requires some form of metal for the bullet, a powder fuel that is rather finicky in its chemical composition, a shell (Which can be recycled from used casings), and a primer, you can simply go out and look for a smooth and straight stick of relative strength to use for a bow. Then you can either cut a point into the shaft, or make your own arrow head by knapping a rock, and heck, the materials for the fletching can be anything from actual feathers to cardboard to duct tape. In fact, the only thing that discredits a bow or crossbow is the slightly easier use of firearms, the lesser range compared to firearms, and the 'reload time'.
it is not easy to make a bolt/arrow for any sort of bow, it takes time and resources, which in a zombie apocalypse would be hard to accomplish
Well, true, I probably did over simplify it, but I still thin it's as viable a choice as a firearm, because it is easier to make ammo for the bow than it is for a gun.
The broadheads are useful for their larger area of damage like for hunting. It bleeds the kill out for quicker death. So the diameter of entry is larger. Remember this weapon can double for hunting. This vid should point out the crossbow is heavier and slower to reload then conventional bow.
the reason the bolts are breaking is because they are hitting that fence.and the broadhead broke cause it also is hitting the fence.and a broadhead will do more damage cause it has a bigger cutting surface.and no tip will just put a hole in the brain and break the skull but a broadhead will cut it open about 1 in.
Using field points rather than broadheads is the way to go. If you shoot from closer than 50 yards your bolt will likely break. I own and use this bow, it's fantastic at long range. A 100 yard shot is not an issue. If you think you want a bow like this, get good at the dead lift, because pulling the string back takes some strength. Also, use your hands, not the cocking hook, it's just one more thing that will get lost.
He used a Horton originally... Although I was pleasantly surprised when he got a new crossbow because for those of you that don't know with bows and crossbows the string wears and eventually needs replaced, but on a compound crossbow(like Daryl uses) you need a special press to string the limb.
You should do an episode discussing was kind of weapons you could forge in a forest, cause obviously you might not be in a city/town and you might not have access to weapons so what type of tree branches would be strong enough to do damage to a Zombie or other possible weapons found in nature. Maybe a silly idea but it's an odd perspective....
What you said at 3:23 was incorrect: "Use it, you will be able to kill a zombie." You cannot kill something that's already dead! You have to destroy it.
Uhh wrong you have to make the ZOMBIE GO BOOM!
Jacob Ruppert Uhh what was the last five words in my first reply?
It's okay. It's completely understandable. The bong pipe you were holding blocked your view of that part of my sentence. No biggie.
Jacob Ruppert u didnt get the point
Technically, living dead.
Plus in The Walking Dead the zombies still have light brain activity, so they are not completely dead.
The neocortex is just not working.
So... yeah you have to kill it again.
i dunno actually it says living dead it means a corpse that is moving, lol?
You can add "Hallow" Tips to your arrow, using a arrow with out a tip can damage it.
At the start Daryl vary rarely reused bolts as the body's got weaker the bolts had less damage being done to the bolt
While it may be rare to reuse bolts, you could probably go through at least three zombies if they were standing in line.
Must be why the zombie survival guide says to have at least 150 bolts. Cause more often than not you'll end up breaking or losing them. Plus learning to make your own would be an invualuable skill because eventually your store bought supply will be depleted.
If the zombie apocalypse arises, I'll probably end up as a doctor/medic. But I'd use this as my weapon
You could always try a solid steel broadhead, ribtek or black stump brand ones. Unlike the fragile razor-heads you were using, solid steel isnt going to lose all its blades.
one test without a arrow head doesn't really mean that it's the best course of action! more videos and tests on the crossbow please.
We are all excited about today's episode
what if daryl has altered the firing power? that way he would be able to get the arrow trough the first half of the skull, while keeping the bolts intact... i think this is way undertought.
You can re-use them, its the bolt that hits the fence that breaks em.
Well, in fact there is an episode in which Daryl Dixon gets two zombies with an arrow.
You know what would tear up a zombie... the wrist blade from Aliens vs Predators
