- In my review of Minilab 3, I check out the latest generation of Arturia’s entry-level MIDI controller. It comes with fewer encoders than its predecessor but adds welcome new upgrades like transport controls, a stand-alone arpeggiator, sliders, and a surprisingly powerful DAW mode. Discover all the new features with me and find out how the lower knob count affects the Analog Lab experience.

Jesus christ you're a legend at explaining stuff. Literally could sit and listen to you review dog food for all i care for hours
awesome in depth review , love the outro jam!
great review!
Clear and complete. Thanks
Very thorough review...can't believe you don't have 100+k subs!
Alexander, thank you so much for this informative video on the Arturia Minilab 3.
I was wondering if you might be able to do a video showing how to setup the Minilab 3 for use with Pigments which would be a great benefit to your subscribers?
This is great....an evolution in music production
Superb, honest review. The Arturia MiniLab 3 suits my needs but I’m admittedly only barely scratching the surface of its capabilities. The software integration is the factor that has already helped me to leapfrog what I was capable of in the Akai MPK Mini III. // I’m the type of person (non-musician) who uses the arpeggiator and chord mode so these features are great, IMO, but I can see how a more mature music maker might regard them as unnecessary. The workflow with its peculiar combination of button presses and states takes a little bit of getting used to but fortunately Arturia has excellent documentation. Honestly, I want to love my Akai but the superior product design behind the MiniLab 3 is its most outstanding feature.
This is probably the best-worded feedback I have ever received. You should consider writing reviews yourself!
Him: pads are for casual drumming. (Plays like a pro).
Me: fair enough.
Very useful review.
I already have a Minilab mkⅡ, but now I want a Minilab 3.
I use Bitwig Studio, so the DAW integration is extremely appealing.
I would keep both, 16 encoders on mkII are great to have.
@Once888
How are the keys of your mkll ?
Harder?
I found minilab3 keys harder...
It is an apprehension while playing fast tempo melodies...
@@shreepadgandhi6739
Yes. I feel its harder.
It is a piano-like touch.
I went to buy my first controller a couple weeks ago to use with Bitwig, and I was between this and the Keystep 32. But ended up choosing the Keystep because of the aftertouch. I need to get now another controller with encoders and faders like the Akai midimix.
But I wish Arturia made a Akai mini plus competitor with the Keystep 37 keys that have aftertouch. That would be insta buy from me.
Thanks. Would love to see Studio One integration as well, like in the Keylab MK2.
I assume chances are good that it will come later.
So do i 👍⏳⌛✨
Most informative! So to simply start playing in Live Arranger mode it needs two fingers? With shift only? or it can be turned into a mode when pads directly work as Transport buttons. TNX!
If so, Arturia fixed it for me with much anticipated Lab and DAW control. Though clicking to select a preset (and no sound preview without a click) it's a bit awkward. .... no preorder yet ....
AFAIK, yes. Two fingers to use the transport controls. Preset auto-load without clicking used to be a thing on the Mk2 I think, I wonder why they changed it.
@@XanderEwald The clicking is similar for me on the MK II.
I thought I remembered the Mk2 having a clickless load function. Maybe wishful thinking :)
@@XanderEwald I just checked again. 1. Hovering/Scrolling over presets works. 2. Clicking on a preset loads it. Same as a mouse. Maybe in the beginning but, this is the behavior at present.
Thank you Alexander very nice video. I want to ask you ho is better controller for Ableton live ,Novation launchkey mini mk3 or Arturia minilab 3 ?
Both are very good controllers with their respective advantages and disadvantages. I will post a comparison video soon.
I'm about to sell my Launchkey mini 3 as I don't like the feel of the keybed and I find all the functionality for Ableton distracting as it works primarily with Ableton's Session view and I work in the Arrangement view.
Great!
What about the key feel compare to a keystep?
Quite similar, they got the typical Arturia mid-sized keys.
😎
Thank you for the review.
Can you talk more about the DAW integration, especially for “low budget“ on iPads (like GarageBand)? I just get the Minilab3 and played around with different solutions (Logic Pro, GarageBand, SynthOne, … etc.) and it seems that GarageBand has not integrated the MCU / HUI protocols completely. So, long story short: in my opinion the Minilab3 is a low cost MIDI controller for upper class DAWs if you want using the knobs and slider of the Minilab, but in low cost DAWs it’s not possible. I guess it’s the same problem with all midi controllers if you want to use them in low cost DAWs like GarageBand and you have to purchase Logic Pro or other.
I don't use iPad to make music, so I can't really say anything about it.
can't find the answer; in live; if there is no rack loaded in a track; does it automatically map the first eight parameters? could be useful for vsts (when you have to choose which parameters to control anyway). Also does the browsing of presets work on any V collection / pigments plugins or just in analog lab?
Also red somewhere that inside live the encoders are seen as pots; which mean they don't automatically take the value of the parameter and you have to reach it; which would really suck and defeat the purpose of having encoders; can someone confirm this?
it's always awkward in ableton to have automatic midi mapping to vsts; on one hand it's convenient; on the other if you want to automate a parameter you have to add it to your automatable list and map a different CC to it. or you know record the midi and have it stuck inside your clip as an obscure CC number and not an editable parameter in the arranger view. they should do something about this (at least give me the midi CCs as automatable parameters).
anyway the overall live implementation seems well thought out; too bad you can't edit more than 8 device parameters; and too bad there is no dedicated transport keys (at least play/stop)
Du gehst ab wie Schnitzel. Ich glaub ich kauf mir das Teil
what midi controller would you suggest for someone getting into electronic music production as a beginner?
It's tough to give a general suggestion. It depends on your workflow, skills, type of music, and software. I would recommend getting something affordable with pads, keys, faders, and knobs, the complete package. Use it for a while, and you will recognize what is essential for your process. Only then move on to more specialized, pricey controllers.
@@XanderEwald thank you
Hi can someone help me. I have recently got the minilab 3 and I Have ableton live 10. When I try to connect them there is no option for there to pick. So I was wondering do I need to get ableton live 11 and is it free to upgrade to live 11. Thanks.
Unfortunately, there are no mapping scripts for Live 9 or Live 10. I ran into the same problem and had to upgrade to Live 11. It is not free - $229.00.
Does it work with Cubase 13 ?
Does it work with garageband
can you please tell me the exact weight of this?
I have the mk2 and weight is my concern as i travel alot.
if you can tell me the precise weight then it will be great.
official website says both mk2 and mk3 are 1.5kg.
It’s 1,5 kg.
@@XanderEwald did you measure it yourself? Couple of other users confirmed me it’s 1 kg
It’s what the tech specs say, I don’t own a scale so I can’t measure it.
@@DJNAVENDU mk3 is 500 g lighter tham the previous gen model
Very disappointed that our doesn't integrate with my Ableton live unless I update to latest version.
That's a bummer! Which version of Live do you run?
Don't the keys of minilab3 appear much harder?
But anyways...a pleasant experience ..
I think selecting the right keys is a very subjective decision, as everyone has different needs. I am personally very happy with the Arturia keys, I prefer the slightly harder response to the softer, mushier keys of some other companies. I can't say anything about the larger Arturia keyboards because I did not try them yet.
@@XanderEwald Thanks for your swift response. Much appreciated. 😊
