The RS is a solid upgrade over the previous model, with the action module being much improved, as well as the in camera EIS. I’m probably going to stick with combo of the Hero 10 and One X2 for right now. But I do see the value of an all in one solution that system offers. Great review Mic, you really covered everything I could think to ask.

Great question! Hero 10 has better audio quality, but if you're vlogging, I invite you to also consider looking at other factors. For example, you may want to capture a 3rd person view, which can look amazing for a vlog. You can see examples of what I mean here: czcams.com/video/yrHcprg8HPE/video.html
Only a 360 camera can get you that amazing 3rd person view, and GoPro MAX doesn't have an external microphone option, so if you want a 360 camera for third person view while vlogging, I recommend One RS or One X2. See other suggestions here: czcams.com/video/FqeZGKZfcK8/video.html

Great video, as always. I'm a bit bumped out because I was hoping for a new version of the One X, instead of an "evolution" iteration (instead of a revolutionary installment) of the One R. I hope they come up with a new One X soon.

You cant buy just the core. So, its a modular camera system where you are not allowed to buy the modules. $279 for the core bundle, riiiiight, just rebuy the entire camera. Minimum upgrade from the One R is to buy everything over.

Awesome Review. Insta360 has again missed another opportunity by presenting a camera that is only an "upgrade" or bug fix to the OneR. It misses an opportunity by not including a better sensor, perhaps larger to have a better high dynamic range, in its 360 sensor for the new oneRS. Still the sound and video of the oneX2 is much better. Hopefully soon a new OneX3 will be sold with a bigger sensor to smash the competition like the new Rioch Theta X and improve the quality in low light or at night in 360 videos. I will continue with my original OneX, waiting for a new much better oneX. If we talk about 2D action camera something similar happens: a bigger sensor is missing and you can appreciate higher dynamic range and better detail in new cameras with bigger sensor like DJI action2 (although that camera has other design problems like heating etc), also missing modes that also include DJIaction2 and the latest Gopro like 120fps in 4k and finally, the sound quality is not even close to Gopro and even the OneX2 sounds better. It's an insult that companies like Insta360 always try to sell the same thing with a facelift and add just a little more. When will a real big change that crushes the competition?

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  Před 2 lety +2

Thanks Recursos. For me, the most important thing about RS is that it is cross-compatible with One R. For the first time in a consumer camera, you don't need to replace the whole camera -- you can just pick and choose which ones you want to upgrade, just like a DSLR. I hope they continue to do this.

    • @uhnotinterested
      @uhnotinterested Před 2 lety

Yes, feel the same, also waiting for a proper upgrade from my original X. However the built in waterproofing in the X2 combined with the sticky lens protectors is a sweet bundle.

    Hi Mic,
Good summary and video as always!
One person’s opinion, I would like to suggest if you can add a buyer’s guide for new users and existing users looking to upgrade as follows (TLDR! 🤣):
    New users:
    - Modular design to add per use cases
    - Compatibility: backward and/or forward
    - Budget friendly with compatibility and customizing purchase on needs/use cases
    - Software: has desktop and mobile app that is feature rich and allows for quick and easy workflow editing. Also, constantly updating. That’s a good and bad thing though. Good that it is constantly being improved. Bad as you expect it to be a finished product and not have to wait 6mos-1yr for all the improvements
    - Taxes: I don’t mention shipping as competitors offer this but no one mention if you buy on Insta360 online store, the taxes are included in the prices which can add up
    - etc. etc.
    Existing users looking to upgrade:
    - new battery that improves runtime of 21% (marketing nos) for the standard battery and also a boosted battery for RS
    - new 4K boosted lens that has an aperture of f2.4
    - new RS core mod is backward compatible with 1” and 360 mod lenses, and R batteries (standard and larger)
    - better dynamic range and colors
    - in camera and post flowstate stabilization options
    - 360deg horizon lock on a 3 mod lenses
    - new active HDR mode
    - new 6K 2.35:1
    - better audio (so what marketing says with 3rd speaker)
    - improved wifi
    - new instant zoom
    - for stills/photos with new 4K boosted lens and RS core mod: quad bayer 48MP sensor (laymen terms, pixel stacking the 12MP sensor x 4, giving high resolution 48MP without compromising sensor sensitivity. More complicated but giving a quick and dirty explanation)
    - lots of AI features for 360 lens that the One X2 has (don’t have it but seen some videos to dive deep)
    - new mounting bracket/cage that is easier to remove or insert, including the 1” mod. Note I believe I saw the R standard battery fitting in this cage
    - slightly improvement in lowlight with 1/2” sensor vs 1/2.3” sensor from R core mod
    - etc. etc.
Accessories that backward compatible to R or forward compatible to RS:
    - quick reader
    - R standard, boosted, and vertical batteries
    - remote control
    - filters for 360 and 1” as those lens stay same but not the 4K standard R lens with new 4K boosted RS lens
    - water housing cage (with R batteries)
    - selfie sticks and other accessories with gopro mounts
    - etc etc
What’s still missing or didn’t improve:
    - USBC door, has that improved to remove and put back?
    - small screen
    - how is the live view, any lag or blackout, which video setting works/doesn’t work
Lastly, for those indecisive buyers, think about what’s important to you, your use cases, and budget (not just want you can afford but willing to pay):
    - Rugged and simple: GP10
    - Modular and Backward/Forward Compatible: Insta360 One RS
    - Form over function modular and modern design: DJI A2 (if you like everything magnets) but need to baby it as glass are exposed and non-replaceable

Thanks for the detailed comment my friend! Re USB C door it is exactly the same. Re live view, I see it in all modes, even Active HDR and 6k Widescreen mode.

I think the biggest difference is the ruggedness. I'd feel a hell of a lot more confident about dropping a GoPro than a OneR!
Also I think the screen on the GoPro is a lot easier to use, the OneR is too fiddly.

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  Před 2 lety +2

Hi Jason. Yes the Hero's larger screen (and dual screen) are definitely more convenient. As for ruggedness, I've dropped the One R (not RS) before and it was ok. One advantage of RS for ruggedness is that the screen is smaller, so it's less likely to be damaged compared to the Hero 10 where both front and back have screens (which is the part most likely to be damaged).

I found that One RS 360 mod is slightly better photo and video quality than One X2. The advantage of One X2 is that it has a little smoother stitching, but you won't notice it unless you are shooting in very tight spaces. The advantage of RS is versatility. If you don't need that versatility, you can get X2. If that versatility for switching to an action cam is useful to you, then I recommend RS.

The advantage of One X2 is that it is easier to use it underwater because you only have to make sure that the battery is fully inserted. Another advantage of One X2 is that at closer distances, it has smoother stitching. If you never want to use the 4k mod, X2 is more convenient. If you might use 4k mod sometimes then RS is more versatile and more practical.

Hi Jean. The new bracket has no hinges for the one r screen protector and nd filter but you can use the old bracket with the RS as long as you use the old battery. As for the gimbal, the core RS has the exact same dimensions as the R core. The 4k boost mod is almost the same size as the 4k mod but yes that red stripe is beveled.

Good review. I would like to see more about the RS vs the X2. From footage I have seen (which is somewhat limited at this point) the quality of the 360 out of the X2 was better. Maybe not from a detailed/compression perspective (appreciate you showing that) but from an overall view. I just bought the X2 and can still return for the RS but what I saw didn't compel me to spend another $170. Look forward to more comparison on the 360 side...

Thanks Steve! Every time I compare One X2 and One R, I always find that the One R is slightly more detailed. But the One X2 has the advantage of smoother stitching and convenience. If you only shoot 360 and never use a GoPro or other action cam, then the slightly more detailed video of One RS might not be a big enough advantage to offset the convenience of the One X2. I'll try to post samples on my review page.

Regarding the Insta360 One X2 I don't know why very few talk about the poor quality of 360 videos when we export them with Insta360 Studio. These exports are necessary because this program won't let you join multiple clips and you need other video editing programs, such as Final Cut or Adobe premier, to do so. Even if you work with a single clip the vision inside Insta360 studio is good, but as soon as you export it, regardless of the format (H.264, H.265, ProRes422) the image comes out blurry and flickering. If you disable 'use hardware encoder/decoder' in settings, as some advise, it improves somewhat but is still unacceptable.
