I was there, right behind the goal. Nobody really new what had happened. On the way home everyone on the coach gave their view of what they saw. In those days there was no instant replay, you had to wait till Match of Day came on 6hrs later. I also recall the following Monday morning in the playground. Everyone doing a Willie Carr flick up

Behind the goal supporting Everton? If you were a regular at Highfield Road (I too was there...behind that very goal in the lower West) then you would surely remember that everyone DID know what had happened. They had been trying the donkey kick since the start of the season in August....but kept on failing.....much to the amusement of we Cov fans who jeered every time they missed.
It was a remarkable stroke of luck that the kick came good whilst the TV cameras were there (not all matches were televised in those days).

Yes, they did it at West Bromwich Albion as well! I was there! Behind the goal at the Birmingham Road End, this would be sometime after this game, I think, but Ernie Hunt, scored another volley in a FA Cup game vs Coventry at West Bromwich, in a 4th Round tie, he volleyed into the top corner from a cross from the left wing, brilliant goal, but not many were clapping again at the Birmingham Road End!

Although Coventry were allowed to keep the points from the game, the goal was deemed illegal as two touches of the ball were taken to flick the ball up using two feet and the goal was deducted from the Goals For for the season. Some years later Matt Le Tissier touched a free kick to a team mate who flicked the ball up which Le Tissier volleyed over the wall into the goal.
