Lyrics;
If I was a better man
Would fellow men take me to their hearts
If I was a stronger man
Carrying the weight of popular demand
Tell me would that alarm her
I'd never harm her at all
If I was a soldier
Captive arms I'd lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I'd sail to her
If I was a wiser man
Would other men reach out and touch me
If I was a kinder man
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me would that appease her
I want to please her again
If I was a painter
I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her
If I was a leader
On food of love from above I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love in burning words I would show it
If I was her lover
Her eyes in kisses I would cover
Come here my baby
Oh they can't touch you now
I'll keep you safe and warm
I'll never leave you at all
Come here my baby
Oh they won't touch you
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me would that appease you
I want to please you again
If I was a soldier
Captive arms I'd lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I'd sail to her
If I was a painter
I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her
If I was a leader
On food of love from above I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love in burning words I would show it

what a great feeling of life in the 80s...especially with this music
Still love it. Can we turn back time , please !!!
They don't write songs like this any more.Absolutly beautiful, goosebumps right now&tears...❤currently on loop
I loved this song when it first came out. Just came up in my head and I'm here to listen again. Still love it.
One of my favourite songs of my childhood. Still love it today. I didn’t realise until recently that Midge was in Ultravox who sang Vienna, another legendary song. But then again Midge is a legend having also written Do They Know it’s Christmas.
This song got to number one in 1985 on my 7th birthday
He has an incredible voice. So pure ! He’s so talented and more pleasant sounding than some of the people today that rely on Auto Tune. Bring back the genius of the 80’s.
Yes, the genius of the 80s!!!
Dude, you hit that one right on the head!!!!!!80’s forever!!!!!!!!!!!
A classic they'll be playing on CZcams and radio stations around the world in the next 100 years and beyond.Mark my words : ) July 1st 2023.
masterpice at all

I love this song❤
80s were Amazing.Another brilliant tune
I ment to say thank you midge ure
For all of your music and videos your number one ps take care of yourself
Greats from Austria
Lovely Scottish voice ❤
Imagine all these 80’s bangers were only coming out fresh now, we would be spoiled for choir, so so many great artists and songs.
I used to listen it on absolute 80's
She sounds like hard work...
Asunción, Paraguay, 2024
Wish so I could go back in time to the 80's - just for a month please!
MY LEGEND HERO, MIDGE URE, THE JUGLAR FROM THE BAND AID, THE BEST MAN LIVING ON THE PLANET
Let’s go back to more simpler times better times when you had to reason to live
Midge Ure, one of the 80'ss geniuses.
When you look what he has done since the mid 70's how on earth is he not a Sir?!
They gave the knighthood to Bob Geldoff instead although it was Midge Ure who wrote and organised Live Aid and Band Aid.
Gosh - haven’t heard this song probably since the 80’s, but it feels like yesterday. Wish it was…
Ultravox Iv got the collection and all of your music when you went solo ps I hope you are ok midge ure love you brother
Many respects to midge ure he and the rest of the musicians raised millions for live aid back in 1985
Midge did so much and deserved a knighthood too. Old Bob never gave him the credit he deserved IMO.
When was the last time you heard a song like this?
What a shame, i dont' remember of this song in 1985.
alizée dans les flammes de mes déesses tu déchires mes pensées
The 80s was so special. Feel blessed to have experienced it.
Special talent this guy was
I agreed,totally!!
There’s something wrong when I saw this video only has 2.2 million views, but now I see it’s only less than 4 years old from (July 2020) How can such a popular song from the 80s only have official music video almost 40 years after his release?
ありがとうございます。大好きな一曲です。いつ聴いても素晴らしいです。
Those 80's dance moves were about the only ones I could ever do...
The world is a better place for having one wee James Ure
IMHO, he has one of the highest IQs as a music artist. He can play excellent guitars and he has a marvellous voice.
She’s turned the weans against us.
I remember when this came out.
This Is Poetry In Motion.
Midge Ure Is So Underrated.
I've always recognized the chorus, but I don't know if I've ever heard this fully until now.
It's almost painful to watch this nowadays as a woman. Not that I've always loved Midge Ures songs and his amazing voice. Music has still true power, I want to believe.
Remember this tune .....was in buggsy malones in paisley. It was an arcade . Played the star wars game with the parking metre money that I robbed . What a boy a was ......
They should bring back dad dancing in white socks 🕺
Sock hops!
Ich bleibe immer Fan,solange ich lebe !
Ich Auch ❤
I wish to hear this song in upcoming GTA VI. Midge should be in this game as radio DJ.
Lata '80, lata beztroski i innych potrzeb ...
This is the most beautiful song
Just watched him live at York Grand Opera House last night. Absolutely brilliant!! He did this, which I love, and finished with Vienna, and yes he can still hit those top notes, he is superb!! 👋❤
lucky Maddy. I’d like to see him one day.
So this is the guy my mommy talks about, music is current to this day, wasn’t he handsome if I was.. older 🎵🎼 😂🥰
Thank you xxx
Think this was the first Midge Ure song I heard of his and then worked backwards, apart from Band Aid in 85.
Few people can ever write music the way Midge Ure did, either alone or with Ultravox.
He was from ultravox??
@@5tyyu He was the voice of Ultravox indeed.
@@5tyyu the lider
Not this song: Wikipedia ""If I Was" is a 1985 song by Midge Ure. It was co-written by Ure and Danny Mitchell (of Ultravox's tour opening band Messengers), and released as the first single from Ure's first solo album The Gift. It reached #1 on the UK singles chart for one week in September 1985.[1]
In the sleeve notes for the 2001 compilation If I Was: The Very Best of Midge Ure & Ultravox Ure wrote:
"This song is pure Danny Mitchell. I found a demo of it on a cassette Danny had sent me for his band The Messengers. I grabbed it with both hands, messed around with it, sprinkled it with fairy dust and the rest is history."
Ure played all instruments on the song except bass guitar, which was played by Mark King of Level 42."
my mate wrote that
2024 love it❤❤
The decade unsurpassed. 80s forever!
This cool dude is responsible for some of the most emotive, hauntingly beautiful songs of the 80s. A nice guy who really did come in first. ❤
This song popped into my head from nowhere today. I haven't heard it for years. I had to come here and listen to it again. ❤
Just did the same, myself❤😂
Me also was sleeping this song came in my head and here iam 😀 something strange going on…
Same here. Flashback to my happy youth in the 1980s with this awesome song
Same five!
Thank you Tim James
A young Paul McKenna, now try to unsee it!
A little known classic from the 80's. The days when they made real songs.
First time hearing Midge. 1/1/24
He is an amazing artist. Midge was paramount to band aid 1984. He did so much please research. IMO, he deserved more credit than he got.
diggin the socks man x
great dad dancing.
My heart filling with some strange longing back in the days before Internet when the future was unknown and beautiful..
...and with hit-charts, not full of fu**ing hip-hop and autotune-voices.
wow, you've said it so beautiful!
For sure 😩
Mind you it s a great song u never beat the 80s music video s ..
@@Paul-fq9pj what
Midge is a true innovator.. I love the music, the voice..
Am I the only young one here? I'm almost 22 and I love this song and Midge Ure/Ultravox
This is one of those timeless classics that still sounds as good today as the day it was released. This song never gets old.
A very emotional man this Midge Ure. Love him❤
If i was ...beside you.
THE MAN!!
Ich habe mir heute das Album gekauft, ich liebe es.👍🥰💋
My boyfriend then was a soldier. After we split I couldn't stop playing that song
Beautiful, beautiful song - love his voice and those days that are gone forever!😢
WHat is the Difference betreuen a Wish and a particle😊
This song hit #1 in the UK in 1985. Why was this never released in the US? It is so wrong that America never got to know this brilliant song.
I’m 27 years old & found this song today years old and already repeating it all day!!
Enjoy coz it`s fantastic
Ultravox had a lot of good songs. Delve into their catalog when you get a chance. I recommend checking out "Vienna". It still knocks my socks off to this day. Another catchy tune by them is "Reap The Wild Wind".
It will wear off and then your forget it
Danny great taste..had the vynl record when released
@@lordmaster2562 let's have a bet on that!?
He has two brothers, gnat & shit fly.
A love song for the ages
I was about 6 years old when this came out. Remains one of my favourite tunes of all time. The best songs age like fine wines.
I don't like wine but I get it
I worked on the video with midge. We were responsible for wardrobe and his light footness on the dance floor. He was such a lovely guy 😁😁
👍🏻
Wonderful
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
He’s a great lyricist. Bumped into him a few times and he’s unassuming and not at all like a big rich rock star ⭐️
Great wardrobe choices, mate! I like even the white socks, even today!
a genius never got the recognition for band aid 85 he should have got.
I would just like to add not all of us coming of age in the 80s danced like Midge here....
This song reminds me of working in Smiths Menswear in High St Edinburgh in the 80s and 90s always was playing over the stereo in shop! Love Midge Ure, very under rated artist and Bob Geldof got all the awards and gratitudes for Live Aid when it was both him and Midge Ure that done it together! But Midge Ure being the man he is stood back and let Bob take the fame and glory! Midge Ure is a Beatifull man and the loveliest man you could ever meet with a heart of gold! Still a hero of mine at the age of 53 years old, for 40 years he's been a part of my life to this day, must listen to him at least once a week still! Thanks Midge ♥️🇬🇧

@@funda1153 who me
Sadly, we cannot go back, but the music is still here with us
Ah, the decade we were thin. Miss being thin,
Two lines that created an impact were" carrying ( most public figures and those in radio/tv etc.) weight of popular demand" and the other line that got me was " I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her/him " and the two lines have a connection
Scotland he's beautiful what a voice handsome
One of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever made
I always wanted to protect the men and I always wanted them to get and keep the love of their lives. For me as a woman, a man is a gift from God to women. That's how I treat every man. With respect and esteem.
A Master Piece 🇬🇧👍😀♥️
From The Great good old days
Yes
still gives me chills ..anytime
