- A male humpback whale's courtship strategy can be pretty aggressive, even sometimes resulting in a fight to the death for a potential partner. So this little one has to be under a mother's watchful eye to stay safe.

Honestly, being a woman is hard! It’s unbelievable, but when all the other males showed up I just shouted FU**ING MEN!! Because this exact same scenario happened to me this month and it’s frightening. It’s sad to see it happens in all forms of life, men attacking all the time. We just want some dann space is that so hard. Rant over..

IT SURVIVES !!!!! its the same clip filmed 5 years ago just voiced by a new guy. Basically the calf gets tired and the mother then becomes more fierce in defence . Because shes bigger and stronger shes then able to get rid of the males.
Too bad she can't just slip the bartender a note for help or tell those big bad boys that she preferred girls! Apparently guys of any species think that they're 'da man"...

This is NOT true as I've just watched it on BBC iPlayer. The Singer who is larger scares the rival males away. He then becomes a protector of his new family in the hope of one day mating with the mother!

When David Tennant first said the baby was in danger I was concerned it would be like with lions and some other animals-the males deliberately murder babies to "free the mother of her responsibilities" so she has no excuse not to bang. (Particularly if the baby isn't the male's son.)
Hearing Tennant explain that none of the male whales actually intend any harm to the baby and it'd just be an issue of collateral damage was somewhat of a relief, but still! It's not like Momma can put her baby in the crib upstairs and _then_ entertain all these men! She's a whale, there's nowhere safe to keep the baby!
Therefore she's off. the. market. But what women want hasn't often stopped men before so I'm glad she managed to chase them away.
No matter what he's talking about, Tennant is the best narrator!!

I had the feeling, that there were too many close ups of Spy Dolphin, Spy-.. "Spy Dolphin is doing this.." "Meanwhile Spy blabla is doing that.." On a technical aspect, sure its fun and impressive but in my point of view in a marine documentation it should be less present.

Looking it up, briefly, it seems like they don't do that, fortunately.
Females are larger than males, too. The males, in some areas will fight each other, which is the danger for the calf.
Makes fight to escort the female on her journey, and then she'll decide to mate or not.
Becoming her one escort is where the brawl happens.
Prompted me to reed an interesting publication:
"Post-whaling shift in mating tactics in male humpback whales"
Basically, being nearly wiped out did change their mating tactics, more physical competition and less singing, but that could be population density increasing or all the older ones were killed and the new adult generation figuring out new strategies that may stabilize...pre whaling or a new era.

I couldn't really get why it was dangerous for the calf when a male whale arrived. Hope they made it tho.
Scientists say that the males don’t want to harm the calf but in competition for mating, can separate the calf from the mom which causes him/her to die.🥺
