- There was no Premier League action this week, so me, Mark and Watto have decided to create our Team of the Season so far! I think we have smashed it this year!
We also took a deep dive into player stats, which really opened our eyes to how good some players have been so far this season!

Porro overlooked at RB was a surprise - he’s arguably been Spurs’s most consistent performer this season along with Kulu and Udogie.
Dont forget vicario for the consistency, I think walker isnt in the discussion because some man city fans even wanted to drop him due to lack of creativity

a lot of love for Spurs players here. Ange been cooking in his 6 months so far, give him another window or two, he's building up for a proper title push next season. This season was always going to be a free hit after the mess Conte left them and then Kane departing. The fact he already has them well in the fight for top 4 UCL spots is very impressive.

Never understand the whole argument that because Allison has been good for years means he isnt GK of the season. Hes the best GK in the world and has been absolutely immense this season.
Exactly. It's the EPL "TEAM OF THE SEASON". That means the best of the best. Vicario I'd argue has had a bigger impact at Spurs but Alisson is still the better keeper. Put Alisson in Spurs and he will make just as big of a impact because Spurs have been trash recently.
Even then, I think Alisson might have actually had a bigger impact at Liverpool currently. Some of his saves have been incredible. Crystal Palace and Newcastle are just two examples. He literally put on a bigger show than Vicario at the Hotspur stadium.

If he was English, they wouldn’t do this. Like look at how they include Walker as a top two RB this season when he’s been off it a bit, and Porro and Trent have been better. If any English GK played the way Alisson does, no one would exclude him because a newcomer was doing really well

Can you elaborate? I just don't understand his hype at all, every time I've watched him I've felt like he isn't particularly great at anything. His passing is meh, dosent have great composure on the ball, dosent have a great shot. I feel like ppl just think hes good because he basically plays as a centre forward for most the game

He's fast, his recovery is the best in the pl for left backs, his reading is good with great interception, he rarley gets past by wingers or strikers, and he has great composure. I don't know what you're talking about with his composure. I admit his passing is ok, but he doesn't need to really shoot from long range or cross a lot in Ange's system. He drives into the half space to make space for Son. You are clearly lying when you say he isn't particularly great at anything. At least one asset that you can't deny is that recovers the ball really well using his pace and reading of the game.

Villa picked up the 2nd most points in a calendar year for the Premier League with 85 points and currently sit second this season with 42 points and not a single player cracks a nod! A lot of these players have been selected on reputation alone and not on this seasons performances.

As much as Emery has done a fanstastic job, Klopp really should have been the Manager of the season so far. Top of the league, still in every competition, 1 defeat in the league (which was farcical) and a huge 30 goal contributions from substitutes is massive.
The fact it was a debate for emery is outrageous, according to them villa dont have a player that get tots so far only, and to take that team to 2nd come on! torres not getting a mention is the biggest miss, id honestly debate between him and saliba.

Bit of a contradiction when you pick Vicario over Alisson in goal but then take Haaland over Watkins just because you can’t not pick him due to being the best ST in the world. Trent has had the freedom to shine in possession this season and made amazing game changing moments. But there are.2 games where his defensive ability literally won Liverpool points. One of them was a last ditch block, another was a clearance behind Alison... add that to highlight real of 50 yard zingers, goal scoring chances created, and 2 goals to his name.. Walker doesnt come close... and walker is the best player not in the 11
It's all narrative now about Trent not being able to defend. The stats back up that he can and does defend well. People are full of confirmation bias now. The second he does something that isn't perfect, people remember it as "another reason he can't defend", but when he defends well, they just ignore it. It's a shame as they're missing out on appreciating an all time great

Szobo has sadly fallen off for the last few games, still an engine man but not as consistent with passing and ball carrying.
Dom's performances in the latest part of the season have been too poor to get a mention here. Had he continued the way he started the season, it would have been criminal to leave him out though.

Yh Porro being underrated massively. Him and Son have been by far Spurs' best 2 outfield players this season imo (excluding Mads). I would honestly put him close to Trent, maybe still not quite there but definately should be in the conversation
Pedro Porro was massively overlooked for the RB position - up there with Trent as best RB of the season so far.
Alisson all day long…. Liv has most clean sheet and let in least goals. Stats also says he is best in Europe based on goals prevented.

GK Martinez, LB Digne, CB Saliba, CB VVD, RB Trippier, CM Rice, CM Szoboszlai, AM Cole Palmer , LW Son, ST Watkins RW Hwang Hee Chan & Manager Emeri
I can't believe the lack of Villa players & other teams players picked by the 3 this just turned into a best of the big 6 clubs like Sky like BT always do despite villa domainating for months and sitting 2nd and then they pick villas manager but with 0 villa players it doesnt make sense.
Which was very shocking because Ben, Watto & Mark are usually good with shouting players & teams out outside the Big 6.

Wouldn't be a Premier League talk show without West Ham being overlooked! Top 6 for the last month, above Brighton, United, Newcastle and Chelsea, Paqueta and Emerson not even mentioned... Emerson tops Udogie and Digne in almost every important full back stat, Kudus has the same amount of goals as Saka in 3 less appearances not even mentioned, Mark put Bowen in his 'worst players of the season so far' a month or so ago when he was top three for goals in the league (???) David Moyes not even mentioned when he's beat Arsenal, Spurs, Brighton, United, Chelsea, Wolves so far... I'm glad Villa and Emery got mentioned as much as they did and think Watkins deserves the striker spot, just shows you how much it takes a team outside the 'big six' to actually get any recognition!
Completely agree mate! Emerson has been unreal for West Ham this season. Areola not getting a mention is unfair - i understand he has a lack of clean sheets but probably more to do with the style west ham play, inviting so much pressure. Areola pulls out word class saves every game.

for a team of the season so far it seems very light on city players. Maybe they have been below their standards but they are surely favourites to win from here. Salah has been in a different role this year and I think he has been better than at least the last 2 years.
Salah has always been outstanding, just look at his stats. People just compare him to when he was an alien.

Watto is such a good find. Why they aren't doing all the punditry work is beyond me because they are knowledgable (both goalkeeping wise and beyond) and also incredibly likeable.
He speaks so slowly its actually hard to listen to. Recapping the game weeks hes great. This was just painful to listen to him try to get his points out.

I think the Unai Emery shout is def on. But Jürgen Klopp is top of the League and Allison Becker is the best goalkeeper in the World (which they all agreed on)but you dont pick him for this team? Also Cole Palmer has been good but i dont have him in this team. No mention of Szoboslai either. 🤷♂️
As a Villa fan Emery is an amazing manager but just based on Prem experience and his successes I think Klopp is just a smidgen ahead of Emery.

West Ham had a massive first half of the season. Players like Kudus, Paqueta and Emerson should get mentioned a bit more imo

Seems like you rather picked who you would want in your team and their potential rather who has actually been the best this season.
Good choices across the board but manager it has to be Klopp, only game he's lost domestically in all comps was the botched Spurs game. This is someone who lost basically his entire midfield and rebuilt it in one season. Only domestic team still in 4 competitions and favourites for 2 of them (arguably three after the Spurs City draw).
Take penalties out of the cf list and Watkins immediately becomes the clear choice

As a Liverpool fan who had a football manager save with Brighton in which Vicario became a club legend, I couldn’t be happier with the state of goalkeeping in the prem 😂

Very good choice but your argument for who as striker should be, who fits the team you've already picked so far, would Haaland get the service compared to wether Solanke or Watkins from those other 10.

One manager has got his tiny team to the top of the Euro league group phase, has 12 injuries at the moment and is 7th in the Premier div. And he wasn't even mentioned.

It's true tho, Udogie underlaps by instruction and hits cutbacks, I've actually not seen him cross, but he doesn't need to, it's the LW that stays wide and puts in the crosses.
Next season might as well just call it "The Sky Sports big 6 TOTS" complete bollocks that we currently sit 2nd in the league and not a single Villa player gets in the team

I'd have gone Watkins but the fact Haaland has been out for over a month & he's still top goalscorer is undeniable
Gotta look at the team they're in, amount of chances they're getting and their overall play. You shouldn't just pick a player because they have the most goals. Haaland has more big chances missed than goals, is underperforming his xG, and dosent really offer much in the build up play. For a player that is just there to score goals he's actually having a below par season.
Now with Watkins, he's probably been on par with the bug chances missed/conversion rate of his chances, but big difference is that he plays a HUGE part in Villa's build up play.
Solanke is a similar type player to Haaland but has a considerably better conversion rate and has missed 12 less big chances.
I think tavenier should get a mention. He's been brilliant and has assists,goals in a good half season for Bournemouth 🤷♂️

Team of the season for me should mean what it says not ‘best players on paper’. To make it interesting you have to take player & team expectations into consideration, otherwise you end up with the team they picked. No Villa players Bailey for example (1 less assist than saka & more non penalty goals playing half as many minutes), Watkins or Luiz is silly, given the season we’ve had. not even a mention of Torres, kudus or Paqueta, Hwang deserves to be in there too. Making these team selections more detailed and less predictable would be far better content.
Trent offers a little bit more than Walker going forward? He offers tons more going forward than Walker.
Walker is well rounded yes, but the Difference in attack between Trent and him is bigger than the defensive sided difference. Trent's defensive "issues" get so over exaggerated... sad to see.
You can't have a team of the season and not have a single Villa player in it. Ended the year joint top. Very poor having the villa manager and not one of his players.
Not gonna batter you for this team, but I agree most with Marks way of thinking here. I feel this team in some positions is a bit too much "these players should be the best" and not only based on who have performed the best. Haaland have been great, but it almost felt as if he took the spot because you felt not giving it to him would be seen as weird. Also "I would choose him tomorrow" is technically a different questions from "have he performed well the last six months?".
Mentioning Odegaard in the CDM position debate and not the CAM is criminal.

He's been as good as VVD imo. Every time I watch Liverpool (which I try not to, United fan lol), he's always on top of everything. Saliba's definitely got that good PR.

I’m so entirely sick of seeing people try to be original by not picking Alisson. It is genuinely NOT close as to how good he’s been this season. He is head and shoulders above the rest, not just in skill but in stats. Vicario has been BRILLIANT for Spurs. Don’t want to take anything away from that, but Alisson has just been better. Don’t believe me?
