Chato's Land - It Ain't Exactly Disneyland

  • If Chato’s Land was a theme park it would be less like Disneyland and more like Westworld when s**t goes wrong. Although, from what I understand, Disneyland Paris more closely resembles Chato’s Land in a hospitality sense, so if you enjoy the film and want to replicate certain elements it might be worth thinking about.

    That's some supporting cast for the two leads: Whitmore, Basehart, Jordan. Your video description above made me wonder if Bronson could have played the gunslinger in 'Westworld'. Bronson always seemed happiest with less dialogue.

    I can’t count how many times I’ve watched this film. I first saw it when I was a kid on late night TV. I was only about seven years old at the time but it left a huge impression. I remember the next time it came on and I had to get up for school, so I went to sleep with a tape recording and woke up especially early just so I could watch some of it before I had to leave. I couldn’t wait to get home to watch the rest! I played that tape over and over, which was the softer PG version. I wasn’t aware of the more violent version until it came out on DVD. Here I am all these years later and I’m still watching this masterpiece on Blu ray!

      @@tonybush555 I saw Jon Landis pan this movie and dismiss it as garbage - ridiculous. There is so much depth in this film and such great dialogue. Another great element is how Quincey starts to lose sway over the hooker brothers and there’s a moment (when Chato’s woman is brutalized ) where he realizes he’s lost control of the group and you can see the regret in his face. His biggest mistake was bedding down at the Hooker Bros ranch.

    Charles Bronson was already 50 when this movie was made. What kind of physical regimen did he maintain to be so lean & in such great shape? Many men today half his age aren't nearly as in good of condition. In your commentary you should have touched on the Mexican half Yaqui character who was employed as an Indian scout to track Chato. The Yaqui historically had many conflicts in Mexico with the corrupt government that tried to exterminate them especially under the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. Chato's character was kind of on the outskirts of society. Because he was a half-breed he didn't really fit in to either side. In a way I identified with his character as I am mixed with an Anglo mother and Mexican father. I felt like I didn't fit in to either side. And I also happen to have some Yaqui ancestry from my Mexican side of the family. This is one of my favorite movies.

    A Matching Film to Ulzana's Raid on equal terms too i felt so sorry for Scots Actor Roddy MacMillan sad end as he bore no animosity to Chato at all he was soon to pass away from an Heart Attack.

    Superb review, but I'd leave Vietnam out of it. It's a brutal tale of human nature, set in a western posse. To sum it up in one word - uncompromising - because I felt the two Scottish characters deserved better. But did they? They bowed to peer pressure, whereas an earlier character Ezra did not. You seriously need to be more like Ezra in this life.

      Many thanks for commenting. The reason 'Nam got mentioned was mainly because Winner cited it in relation to the film in his autobiography, confirming it was part of the overarching thematic. But, admittedly, it was something I could have omitted. Appreciate your input. T.

    It starts well, 'back off lawman', and it's interesting to see Scots actor Roddy McMillan, probably the best thing in the film, in a feature film of this type, but under Winner's typically lackadaisical direction it merely moves the posse from one location to another, squabbling & making bigoted remarks as they go, whilst Bronson, barely in the film, is inserted at too few intervals. Another commenter describes this film as 'magnificent'. Really? What is he comparing it to? Compared to High Plains Drifter & The Outlaw Josey Wales it just doesn't measure up.
    As for Winner, I've watched most of his films several times & I often wonder why. I watched Death Wish again recently & it's tedious. Films like The Sentinel & Scream For Help are terrible. I enjoy West 11, Hannibal Brooks & a few others but even Winner himself conceded that he made films strictly for the money. His camera placement & editing are some of the worst you'll see.

    I f*ckin love this film and a lot of other 70’s action & western films. Don’t know why you had to bring ‘wokeness’ into it, I’m about as woke as it’s possible to be on probably every ‘woke’ issue and I can appreciate the poetry, art, stoicism, action, stunts, horse riding skills, restraint, editing, classic awesomeness as much as anyone and I have shown this to ‘woke’ friends including females and it’s been a good time. By the way if you got a weekend, sick pay, holiday pay and healthcare then you can thank woke activists for those things. Gettin a bit sick of hearing ‘woke’ thrown around as some threat to civilisation.

    • @tonybush555
      @tonybush555  Před 8 měsíci

      Don't know where you hail from, Jeff, but in the UK we have Trade Unions to thank for paid holidays, the TUC in fact, which were a militant cadre of hard-working salt of the earth types, as far from woke as possible, who pressured the government, presided over by Neville Chamberlain (a Liberal Prime Minister who was opposed to paid leave) to cave in. That was 1938. Paid sick leave became statutory only in 1983 under the right wing Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher - who by no stretch could be considered woke. In fact, pretty much the antithesis. Aneurin Bevan, a tough but thoughtful political bruiser, introduced the National Health Service in 1946 when hospitals and healthcare were nationalised and people were no longer required to pay directly for care and treatment. Again, my fellow Welshman Nye Bevan isn't someone likely to be thought of as woke. Cancel culture is a cursed weapon in modern times and one I despise immensely. If Chato's Land were made today, I wonder if there might be some outrage at a white man of Lithuanian origin playing a mixed-race native American. I brought wokeness into it purely because I chose to and because freedom of speech, thought and opinion still allows me to do that at the moment. For how much longer, who knows. However, I respect your feelings and opinions, and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Appreciated. T.
