    This is such a good video. My 8 iron clubspeed went from 82 to 92. Hit 174 ballspeed last week with driver which was a personal best. I play a lot of sim golf. Cracked my driver face. But I’m able to maintain near top speed throughout the entire round as opposed to it all quickly dissipating. This is fantastic. You ought to invite this guy to your next be better golf school. Pushing hard off your left leg to initiate backswing is the way. I’m 55 years old and literally gained 10 mph with my irons using this technique. Just fantastic. My hook has also disappeared. Just insane. Thank you for posting this

    Hey Brendon. Well you mentioning Doctor Kwon is the real story here. I’m 74 and have been working on his technique ever since you first aired your visit to TWU. Now this video tells me that I have not been active enough with my back swing. Thank you for investigating and posting your videos. I was stuck at 87 club head speed and today prior to seeing this video I got it up to 95. I’m really stoked now!
    Keep up the good work.

    Crazy what a difference an aggresive backswing makes! I'm 65, played for 15 years, 15 handicap, 250 average with 270 bests decreased to 230 and 250 couple years ago, but with you and Milo and Clay Ballard, improved. Dr Kwon drills were a game changer - 65% fairways on good round averaging 270 with 290 bests - suddenly, eagle putts every round. Same for my brother-in-law, never reached par 5s in 2, but doing it every round: the only change he's made is doing the rope drill to warm up. I flatter myself that if I dedicated myself to improving, I'd figure golf out as astutely as you have, so thanks for doing it for me and the rest of us. Based in LA, so once COVID calms down - highly vulnerable family member to consider - definitely interested in clinics.

    This is crazy! I was watching the Dr. Kwon videos and the two things I picked up on as well were the active backswing and the patient downswing. I then started rewatching Drew's videos just this week and was amazed at how similar what they were saying was. I went to the simulator and was hitting my clubs further than ever in the first session. My 7 iron normally carries 160 and I was clearing 200!

      Yeah it works! I might add it helps to have as heavy a swing weight as you can handle with the irons as this will give you feel of where the club head is and make the transition smoother or patient. Didn't work for me with lighter swing weights (lost control and confidence) But your gain in distance sounds reasonable. When I execute it properly went from 135-138 carry with an 8 iron to 160 average and a 172 max carry!! Only real thought was shift left to start swing and take the club back fast using the body. Creates a bigger shoulder turn and more wrist hinge. Its a weird feeling at first because you would think you would lose accuracy however this is not the case. Think this is great for stronger,more muscular golfers because it creates less tension on the way back kind of like throwing a ball as far as possible

  • @barryread3672
    @barryread3672 Před 2 lety +18

    If you go back and look at David Lee and the Gravity Golf swing, he talks about "heaving" the club into the backswing. Then letting the club drop in the transition...I would equate this to what you said about being patient in the downswing. Great video Brendan.

    • @golfshoe9321
      @golfshoe9321 Před 2 lety +2

      I've been following Lee since the 90s and a lot of what he says is being echoed. A hard heave to top results in a good counter fall, a good counter fall allows you to have the 2-stretch Jack talks about gets the body moving towards the ball. You can't have a counter fall if weight is even or not enough movement towards the target at the top. And yes, at the transition, just let "gravity" drop the club back down(the patient part) while the lower body is cranking towards the target to generate CHS.

    Between your chanel and wisdom in golf my golf has improved so much. From wisdom in golf I gained the knowledge of having the club face closed at set up then pushing my hands forward to square the face up and from your Chanel ( dr kwon and d cooper) I learned about letting the back swing mature and not snatching from the top. I hit a drive the last time I was out and hit the front of green that was 375 yards. It was on a semi links course and it was slightly down wind but even still I have played that hole before and haven’t been anywhere near the green. I was about 80 yards past my playing partners who would normally hit the ball the same distance as me. It wasn’t a one off either, I was past them all day and I only missed 1 fairway left, every other drive was on the fairway. Thanks for your insights keep up the great work. Can’t wait for the season ahead. 👏👏👏

    It's about the torque. You have to resist harder to stop a faster backswing, so that when you do change directions you're at max force right from the top.

  • @edchapman5801
    @edchapman5801 Před rokem +1

    You are a renegade, but my Dad had this same idea 50 years ago. He said to make a full, powerful athletic backswing and focus all my concentration on relaxing at the top and allow the recoil to begin in a smooth, relaxed fashion and make a full follow through. He said doing it the other way was bassackwards, because a smooth backswing tends to make the transition an abrupt jumping at the ball - never thought I'd see this common-sense approach published on a public forum - good work!!!

    These videos have really helped me tremendously. Thank you so much. One big thing I’ve noticed is that the left heel comes off the ground to get a more forceful takeaway and turn of the shoulders. I’m at an age where my limited range of motion requires the heel to come up to get this shoulder turn thus giving me more patience on the downswing and more speed.

    This is 100% the way. I've been playing golf for about a year and a half and have always been pretty athletic, but with the driver I started out around maybe 95mph club speed. I am now at 110-112 club head speed and around 155-160 ball speed, most of that speed has been gained through learning to turn and use ground force, also recently getting my trail elbow un stuck (thank you Dr. Kwon!) but I've always felt a little passive on my backswing which causes me to rush at the ball or have a "hit tendency". I have recently began to feel like I cant really turn or jump any harder through the ball to create more speed until I started getting more active on my back swing, watching this now... and thinking back to the Drew Cooper videos and the stuff I have watched with Berkshire, DeChambeau, and Como, it all completely makes sense, you have got to set your self up for speed, so you can accelerate before you have to produce the speed.

    This is a classic example of the stretch - shorten cycle of muscles especially fast twitch fiber. You initiate the cycle by increasing the speed of the initial stretch... like stretching and releasing a rubber band. What's most interesting here is the other little alternating motions used to energize the body prior to the club moving. Think of simply springing up from a squat. If you go down slowly, hold an instant and spring up you will come nowhere close to quickly squatting and not hesitation as you spring up to a high point. Basic physiology but it's not taught in conjunction with the golf swing by very many. Another arrow in the quiver. ("Tour Tempo" by John Novosel demonstrates the affect of the faster back - thru action and many great players swung with a lot of backswing speed.... like a certain Ben Hogan.)

    The way I understand it is this; the active backswing is used to generate momentum, providing a counter force to brace against, allowing a much higher downswing force to be gathered.
    So like in a drag race, where you would hold the brake to build up engine RPMs before actually accelerating.

    Another great addition to the step drill and Drew's feel is Sean Clement's throw the club feel. Using the step drill, feel like you're going to toss the club as far as you can down the line (maybe a little to the right of target for better in to out path). Helps fight the tendency to hit at the ball which causes casting which causes early extension. I've had a lot of success combining the two

Make sure you cut off the top so its big enough to release the water. Make a backswing(less than full) and get the water to go as far as you can throw it. Great feedback! Brendon, I’ve enjoyed your videos for years. I gotta say that your quest has been great.
    As I’m getting older, less flexible, and having more time constraints with work and family, I think I’m getting off the ball speed “bus”. I think it’s great for younger folks or people who don’t have largely desk jobs/sedentary lifestyle/ (other than just going to the gym 4x/week or so). I think the quest for speed for most of us will end up shortening our golfing lives and may cause injuries that affect our daily living. I’m not sure a few more mph is worth it. I went down the SuperSpeed golf route, using GRF, and all that and gained considerable speed (for me). I’ve found that speed is so beneficial, but it tears me apart. My back aches from all that turning and torquing and side tilting, etc.
    I think I’m going to go more of the way of Jimmy Ballard/Rocco Mediate and try to relive tension off my body and more specifically, back. I think at this point with my professional career, family life, and limited time, this change will help me. I’ve already been playing with this some, and I’ve found it to be more consistent and just plain easier to do. My ball speed has dropped to the low 150’s with driver, but my back is enjoying it. Plus, the top LPGA players are around that speed, and they’re tons better than me! So that speed is enough!

    This all makes me think of a golf article by Kelvin Miyahira several years ago called "Muscle Power Golf? NOT!" It was his assertion the power in golf comes from connective tissue, not muscle. So, a fast, violent backswing would more greatly load the stretch of the connective tissue than a slow and leisurely pace. The "passive" downswing is really just the golfer staying out of the way as the connective tissue delivers much greater power as it unloads its stretch.

    Hi Brendon. The power; ground forces and direction comes from our swing center circle known as our obliques muscles groups. We see Dr. Kwon often touching them; but does not mention their name. Our Obliques also protects our spine from harm ; separates our upper body from our lower body and allows the head of our club to swing on it slanted circular path to the bottom of its swing arch where the head of our club becomes closest to its swing circle center..
    So yes swinging the club as fast as the conditions of your obliques allows you to go is good. So no one please do not over do it. But know that the club head at the top your swing experiences a brief period of weightlessness loping clockwise at transitional part of the downswing. This is why you should never rush the downswing. To understand this better think of yourself inside a roller coaster going to the top and the weightless you feel as the roller coaster suddenly descends to the bottom.
    Because of the above: instead of bending from my hips as I address my ball i now simply tilt my chest as this one action instantly activate my obliques muscles groups.
    Hope I made myself clear. Cheers

      @@nicholasdemetriades9154 no. Do the hips bend a little? Probably; but I pay no attention to them as my lead knee moves my trail hip out of the way for my backswing and then on my downswing my trail knee automatically moves my lead hip our of my way.
      Before I would focus too much on my hips and often found myself spinning my hips too fast on my downswing. I also feel more relaxed simply tilting my chest as I place my clubs perpendicular to my ball. My knees flexes in the degree they need to depending on the club I am using.
      Also their in no swaying in my swing as my feet remains in the same place on the ground as they exchange pressure with the ground while I am swinging my club.
      I Hope I made myself clear enough. When the weather is better I will be making a video on my new swing. Cheers

    Great stuff. I remember Kyle Berskshire recommending periodic range sessions where you spend the entire time hitting out of your shoes. By doing so, your body gets used to what it feels like to handle tremendous speed. You get faster almost organically. Get wild! lol.

    I think the crux of all this is that muscles only work in one direction, E.G. they can only contract.
    The back swing muscle group must have time to disengage, before the down swing muscle group starts to hit.
    If you rush through the top of the swing, you will interfere with the hitting muscle group .

    So somebody corrected me if I’m wrong (...and a thought provoking vid by the way 👍) but what is the lesson here is to take a fast moving (but not “jerky” or sudden) backswing, and then a downswing that is not overly fast but complete and well performed - that is how you maximize your power? (I’ll give it a try!)
    And who would have guessed that the backswing speed was what you needed to increase!?!?!

    Commenting at 5:10 mark so I have a long ways to go, but here is my answer before watching the whole thing (no cheating here lol) it seems to me, the biggest change was the increase in backswing speed, combined with more rotation through the ball, it almost looks Bryson DeChambeau esque the way he’s finishing and spinning that lead foot out. So probably using more ground force reaction. Other than that I can’t see anything else that he is doing on a visual analysis.

    What I observe is the new backswing brings the club further back, the right elbow flies instead of staying tucked and the overall width seems wider. This provides more path length to accelerate the club.

  • @76MUTiger
    @76MUTiger Před 2 lety +2

    Not cheating. What he did so much better was take the club back at a much faster rate. In turn I think that cleaned up his swing plane. His last swing with 130 clubhead speed is a much freer swing, with better flow. (Very Kwon-esque).

    To me, the big difference is, in the faster backswing, he's aggressively force loading either the stretch-reflex, the connective tissue, or both, whereas his slower backswing was just a deliberate positioning of the club at the top of the backswing. In the faster, more aggressive backswing, once the stretch-reflex and/or connective tissue is loaded, it fires itself leaving the golfer almost feeling like an innocent bystander.

    How come they don't teach to have the elbow "fly" like a baseball swing? I can swing about 3-5% faster using this method and it's more comfortable. John Daly swings like this. I'm surprised the long drive guys don't. Maybe it has accuracy or launch issues that negates the speed or something. I'll try it on the course when I play next or with the simulator this weekend.

      @@gzman1 I tried my "baseball" or Freddie Couples style swing and a backswing using the scapula glide method, which I first heard about with Rotary Golf, but this is the person that taught that guy the method. I couldn't believe it but my ball striking was so much better doing this even though I never had a lesson and just watched 2 videos. My 2nd game on the simulator I did that style for all but 3 holes. The first simulator match we played the same course as the Waste Management Phoenix Open and I played the first nine with my baseball swing and the back nine with the Scapula Glide backswing, nothing else. I did about 4 strokes better on the back nine, which shocked me. I got an 89 which is about average for me, then I shot a 81 the second game using the Scapula glide trick on all but 3 holes. I would have broken 80 had I used it the whole time. My best ever is a 77 but I had 3 birdies that time and no birdies today. I'm hooked with the Scapula Glide method to bring the club back.

    Another way to think about it is something Drew said on another BBG video: by moving aggressively on the backswing, you stretch all the relevant muscles and make them ready to snap back, adding what he called "free speed." A quiet backswing won't do that.

I’d have to imagine tossing the ball with his rocking motion and arm swing correlates much better to an actual swing than just loading up and heaving it…
